Really good video that was easy to follow. I was dreading this as I'd seen other videos where they took the bands off the green egg, but clearly no need to on newer green eggs. Just 8 nuts and two springs that are all easily removed. One added bonus is my lid now lines up properly with the base :) Now I just have to wait 24 hrs before using it.

I liked your video regarding the BGE gasket replacement. You made it seem very easy. Will replace mine in a few days, weather permitting.

I'm so glad you liked it! The hardest part is really just lifting the lid on and off. BTW - as long as you're replacing the gasket in a few days, you should think about doing a clean burn the day before. Here's my video on how to do that if you haven't watched it already: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raivqpdqZ85nnLs

@@BehindTheFoodTV Also, is it easy to pop the thermometer out and where can I get a kick a$$ can from (I have the XL BGE. Are there different sizes and do the cans restrict airflow?). I like the idea of just dumping the can full of ashes as opposed to using the “scraper”. Thx/Greg
@BehindTheFoodTV
@BehindTheFoodTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hey @@DPHOUSE67 thanks for asking. The thermometer is easy - if you look inside the dome you'll see it's just held on with a spring clip. Squeeze the clip and the thermometer will slide right out. On the Kick Ash Can - it's AMAZING that this little piece of metal can make such a difference. There's a hole matched to the air intake so there is zero restricted airflow. You can get the can and basket here: bitly.4emv.com/KickAshHome

BGE is adamant about not introducing chemicals to the ceramic interior. How does Acetone affect the taste of what you cook after applying the new gasket?
@BehindTheFoodTV
@BehindTheFoodTV 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. The acetone evaporates before it would ever be absorbed. There is no effect on the taste of the food you cook afterward. -Al

Thanks for clarifying concerns about acetone. If I use stove gasket instead of original felt, should I just do the bottom portion sand leave the top gasket area bare? Great forum and videos, I am subscribing to see what other things to learn about my BGE, the equipment side and cooking with it. Thank you!

I remove my gasket after the clean burn while the ceramic is still warm enough. The glue releases easy. I agree wouldn’t want chemicals to get into the pores of the ceramic. If there is any glue residue left let it cool and lightly sand. Good video

It nearly burns off after the burn. Let it cool after gasket removal then you can sand leftover glue. I used a small surface grinder with a sanding disk. Made short work and left the surface clean. Need to use protection using a sander. Not safe to breath particles ! I’m going to replace mine this spring

Did my first cook after replacing seal as you showed in this video. Worked great using the acetone to help loosen the adhesive. Smoked a butt on my first cook after replacing the gasket and there seemed to be a strange after taste to the meat that I've never had before. Is tthat because of the acetone and will that go away? I did wait 24 hrs before the cook too. Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.
@BehindTheFoodTV
@BehindTheFoodTV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee. The acetone evaporates really quickly (seconds or minute), and even if it didn't it would have burned off in the first few seconds so it can't be that. Did you do a deep clean before you replaced it?

I’ve never changed the gasket on my BGE (about 4 years old and used regularly). Does it make much difference? I don’t notice any smoke “leaking” out around the edge.
@BehindTheFoodTV
@BehindTheFoodTV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Conor. It’s less about smoke leaking (the shape of the Kamado style cooker forces air to move up not out), and more about controlling airflow so air only gets in from the bottom vent. I change mine every spring on both of my eggs. BTW - the other benefit of changing the gasket is you getting to realign the lid to solve the overbite/underbite issue that invariably comes with spring loaded lids like the BGE. I hope this helps! -Al

Hi Ryan. When you do a clean burn (the video right before this one) as a rule you replace the gasket. While it may look fine the intense heat can and often does damage both the fibers and the seal. I hope this helped you with your visibly ready one! -Al

So I put my new gasket on, top and bottom and tightened everything up again but I have some spots in front by the handle that aren’t giving any resistance when I put the paper in and do the pull test. How do I fix this?
@BehindTheFoodTV
@BehindTheFoodTV 4 жыл бұрын
Good question, Drew. Most likely the band slipped downs little when you tightened it down and is pulling the front up. Loosen the bands and make sure your alignment is right (use the paper test), then tighten again making sure the band doesn’t slip. If that doesn’t work please let me know and I can give you some other ideas. Actually let me know either way please so others can see your question and if the fix worked. Good luck! And thanks for watching!
