If, like me, you have an XL Egg, remember that top dome is HEAVY and if you are not used to hoisting it by yourself, have a spotter nearby to help re-center the dome in the ring. I got hung up on the thermometer when the dome shifted. Great tip. I like to swap out my vent gasket at th same time as the main gasket (needs a bit more felt - they sell a separate gasket kit).

My last gasket replacement I put acetone in a plastic squirt bottle and soaked the old gasket before trying to scape it off. A lot more of the old gasket will scrape off clean so there's less to scrape and brush. A little more acetone later to get it squeaky clean.

Thanks for the video. It would be nice to have this checklist in pdf. Suggestions for content- what’s the best way to clean the plate setter and how’s the best way to avoid cracking the plate setter. I’ve gone through a couple probably due to to extreme of a temperature difference when outing into a hot egg.

I use a an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment, painters suit, goggles and mask. That porcelain glaze is very resilient.

Word of warning sometimes the existing gasket adhesive is insufficient. 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive may be your friend.

HI Dan, Once I snug down the nut caps,. I will open the dome carefully and attached the springs. they are in a relaxed position when the dome is open. Thanks, Chef Jason

Perfect time to do a high temp burn off since you're ready to replace the gasket anyway. It would be a good video, but I think you're supposed to remove the thermometer if you get it up close to 1000 deg. You're dome and fire ring whitens up almost like new. I plan to do this soon as my gasket is getting old and brittle.

Hi there, did you also did the dollar test? My XL was very difficult to get the alignment properly. Also the springs tend to pull the back of the lid up, i pulled to lower band a bit down on the back and its oke now.

I didn’t do the dollar test. I know there is a tiny bit of rear adjustment on the hinge to get it dialed in.

You said you needed a 1/4 inch gap on the lower band but you never adjusted it to that 1/4 inch gap.

Thanks for watching, I find removing the lid helps me get the gasket seated properly and then also helps with alignment of the dome to the base. No overbite or underbite. But whatever works best for each person is great. Happy Cooking, Chef Jason
