Thanks to the comments here I discovered the Tale of princess Kaguya. It's a shame that I am way too late but delighted that I got to witness that artistic masterpiece. That movie aced the true art of story telling according to the time period it is based on. I will forever love Baymax, but Kaguya deserved that accolade. Digging deep into its production value and creative approach, it breaks my heart even more that the movie was robbed of the recognition it deserved. Takahata deserves at least a posthumous tribute for his contribution to animated films.

Big Hero 6 had a HUGE emotional breakdown scene in the very middle of the film. I remember being sucked in from the very start, and when that scene happened, I could tell that Disney took itself very seriously. It was telling its audience that grief is real. It's okay to feel angry and sad. As Baymax said, crying is a natural response to pain. Hiro had to learn to let go of his anger and instead embrace his brother Tadashi's pursuit of helping others. Tadashi died because he understood that to live for others, you have to make sacrifices. Hiro learned this as he let go of his anger and risked his own life to help another. Baymax helped Hiro understand that his brother's memory, legacy, and impact was survived through Hiro and Baymax. While we grieve our losses, their memories are survived in those who were impacted by who they were in life.

If we're talking strictly animation, Look at literally any 2D Disney film ever made, whether Snow White in the 30s to Cinderella in the 50s to Beauty and the Beast in the 90s, it's incomparable. Japanese anime animation is ridiculed in part because of the lack of overall movement in anything that isn't a Ghibli film. Characters are constantly standing still and talking due to trying to cut corners with a budget. Kaguya should've easily won this award, but let's not get carried away on the whole medium. In some cases, anime's storytelling is better, if just unique. But in sheer animation quality they are far behind even just in the realm of 2D.

I can't help but to think that the voters here are all pathetic. I can't believe that the critically-acclaimed The Tale of Princess Kaguya and Song of the Sea didn't win the award. It has always been Pixar and Disney which the latter always gives us the same formula every year. Others said that it's okay that Disney won because they're the reason why is there an award for this. But the thing is, Disney failed to deliver same quality movies unlike before (except Princess and the Frog). And not only this Oscars, others too. They favor CGI. Ugh. This is so frustrating. Smh.

Big Hero 6: Brother dies, superhero assemble and barely do action, car chase (only great action scene in the movie) Fight little microbots, boring villian, no evil human sidekicks robot dies, robot comes back, Stan Lee cameo HTTYD 2: reunited with mom, interesting villian, dancing and the dreaming, huge battle sequence, dad death, loses toothless, gains toothless, new alpha, new chief, rebuilt the village and dedication to father. We all know who the real winner was.....

This really makes me very mad. Not because of the whole who should have won debate, but because of the part when Dwayne acts awkward about crying watching the Lion King when he was 20. Animated films can be just as influential on our feelings as works of live action. Did you ever see Grave of the Fireflies? Saddest movie ever. Perfect Blue? Scariest movie ever. Animation is more than just kids films, and the judges for the Oscars need to recognize this fact.

The reason about the Lego movie wasn’t nominated to best animated film, is because on 2010, the academy puts a rule about no motion capture and if a movie have a scene on real life, they can’t be nominated for that category, and the lego movie has a real life scene

alvaro18gr I absolutely agree. First of all, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (5/5) and Song of the Sea (4.75/5) are the 2 best animated films of 2014 (Princess Kaguya is actually in my Top 10 of all time!), by far...bar none. HOWEVER, we all knew the Academy were never going to recognize them because they're not American and didn't find a large audience. THAT BEING SAID, out of the nominees, I'm sorry, but HTTYD2 was the superior to BH6 in every way. Honestly, out of American animations, The Lego Movie should have won, but it wasn't even nominated (stupid Academy!), so... Don't get me wrong, BH6 is a very good animated film. I gave it a 4/5. But HTTYD2 is 4.5/5 (Lego Movie is a rare 4.75/5) and was more visually stunning (Roger Deakins was the Visual Consultant, for crying out loud!) and had more emotional pull. Out of all of the great animated films to come out of 2014, sorry, but the Academy didn't choose the "true winner." Yet again. :(

The Oscars are like MsMojo. Most of the MsMojo lists consist upto 90% of Disney and Pixar films only, while all the winners in the Oscars are either from pixar or Disney. IMO The Tale of the princess Kaguya should've won, but guys, don't determine the quality of the film with these kind of awards, where the voters are ignorant and biased. I remember seeing this on TV. When they said, "Big Hero 6" as the winner I said, "What?" I do not hate this film I really liked it, it's just that I thought "How to Train Your Dragon 2" was going to win. I prefer "How to Train Your Dragon 2" to win instead of "Big Hero 6." Also, "The LEGO Movie" should have at least been nominated. I actually like "How to Train Your Dragon 2" and "The LEGO Movie" better than "Big Hero 6" to be honest.

I had the same reaction too! I think it's due to the fact that the Academy voters are too short-sighted towards their view of animation, considering it to be mere kids stuff to take it seriously. 0:10 - I remember crying my eyes out when I watched the end of The Lion King. Me: Well, nor me apparently, I just reflect the ending of The Lion King. The movie's happy ending is rather emotional and meaningful than heartbreaking and sad.
