Agreed. Plus the hike in JR pass too is an indirect way of putting pressure on tourism. Not that it would stop influx but still...

My wife and I were just in Kanazawa 3 weeks ago, on our way to Unazukionsen, Kurobe. We kept our hotel reservations to support the economy.

Excellent! Yea I would definitely do the same. The risk of an aftershock being as bad as the initial earthquake isn't that likely.

@@harblife We're from San Francisco so earthquakes are part of life. Surprisingly, there were still a lot of tourists in Kanazawa. Kurobe was also business as usual. But sadly, other stops such as Kaga Onsen Station were like ghost towns.

Maybe it will start to slow down some. But Japan is a amazing place to visit and was shut down for so long it might just get a lot more busy before it slows down! Please keep the videos coming. Thank you for the update and Roll Tide!!!

They talk about excessive litter, which definitely IS a problem, but I have heard that past a certain station, there are no trash cans. Best to warn climbers well in advance that there will be nowhere to dispose of trash and that they will be expected to bring their trash down with them.
@harblife
@harblife 11 ай бұрын
I know what you mean. It's like that in Tokyo as well. You can only fault people so much when you don't provide the facilities to keep the areas clean. Either way, you would think people climbing such a sacred site would have the decency to not litter. Hopefully this new fee will allow more trash cans to get installed!
@619AGT
@619AGT 11 ай бұрын
@@harblifeApart from that, I’ve heard that the reason why there haven’t been any public trash cans in years, is due to the trauma that still lingers from the Sarin Gas attack in 1996 (or was it 1995). No disrespect to the people of Japan, but I believe the country is long overdue in terms of easing down from that incident, and re-establishing public trash cans so that people don’t have to carry their trash, and minimize the chances of littering.

I had the absolute best time of my life in japan on the month of oct 2023. I only had a vague route in mind and changed my plans on a whim. It's definitely not the most efficient when it comes to doing everything a tourist should do but i lived as a japanese traveling across it. Going to non touristy areas like the residential area in ibaraki(visited grandma), shin aoyama, gotemba, etc were definitely the highlights of my stay there. I wanted to come again sometime during this 2024 but it seems over-tourism is gonna be a thing. Hopefully 2025 will be better.

I'll be in Japan for the first two weeks of April. Good to know Kanazawa will be the best place to see the cherry blossoms during that time, as well as the unfortunate silver lining of there being less people to better enjoy the parks.

Japan's summers have always been brutal. Last summer I was in Kyoto and yeah, I looked like someone had dumped a bucket of water over my head--I was that sweaty. But did I have a great time anyway? Yes, yes I did. Just be prepared for the insane humidity.

With the new work visa and all i'm taking a trip out in spring to look into my options of starting my own tourism company to help small to medium Japanese businesses connect to English speaking tourist. With the influx of people i'm sure every business is scrambling to get as many people in the door to make up for covid and begin to pull a annual profit again.

Hi Harb! Great and useful information, as always thank you very much. Sad to hear about the Mt. Fuji cap, but it may be for the best. If I were in charge, I'd create a sort of reservation system to climb the paths, that way you know when to go and won't be turned away in case the visitor cap is met for the day. As a visitor, I have no issue paying a small (extra) tax to enter a historic site to ensure the money is used in both its maintenance and preservation, so others can enjoy them. We all put down a grain of sand, and eventually, we'll have a beautiful beach. As per a stronger yen, we'll have to wait and see how it unfolds. Economics are complicated in the best of times, so who knows how it will go. I took full advantage of a weaker yen in my last visit and the savings we're quite palpable. Cheers!

@HarbLife hi, me and my wife really like your KZbin videos and your informative content and I was wondering if you happen to know how is the refunding of the taxes at tax free shops going to work now for tourists, are we going to have to keep all our receipts and only be able to get our money back at an airport or what?

Enjoy the economic boom in tourism while it last; makes up for those lost years of the pandemic. A robust economy can help prosperity e.g. wage increases, business expansion more and better job opportunities. One caveat it can bring on some inflation.

I'd do it in Narita if I were you, February 5th is really close. Unless you can get that money exchanged instantly in the US or if your bank can guarantee you'll receive the yen before your flight, I wouldn't chance it.

I was in Tokyo for new year's and felt the quake even from there so yeah, it was big. However (and please know this is just my opinion, I'm not saying if anyone is right or wrong, we all have our own views and reasons), if we all stopped visiting places "in case of a disaster", we pretty much wouldn't go anywhere on this earth
