War Thunder Drone Age is the latest update from the game. With it, it introduced Scout Drones and Strike Drones. They're pretty annoying so today, I use big missiles to take out drones!
Strike Drones are basically a killstreak that spawn you directly above the battlefield with 2 ATGM's making it pretty easy to get revenge. The MQ-1 is a bit lacking in the missile department in comparison to the others. The hellfires are a bit strange when it comes to launch parameters but the other nations strike drones don't have that problem! :)
At launch the strike drones would cost you 550 spawn points but it's since been adjusted to 750! The problem is that's more than a decent CAS plane which can quickly rearm and come back but when your drone has a max speed of 250kph, that's going to take so long to go land and come back that the game is going to be over.
Basically, I can't stand drones... so we're going to shoot them all down! :)

The biggest issue i have with drones is that fact that they just spawn directly above the battlezone, making radar completely useless, and good luck spotting them without thermal sights on your AA if they stay at 6km alt. You can engage tanks with them within seconds after spawning, not even top tier jets can do that.

At least in my a-10 I have to put myself in harms way even using AGMs but drones costs less to spawn and are for the most part safe from any form of danger

Yeah I am using the SIDAM 25 right now cause I just unlocked the Ariete (P) and today has been suffering when I get randomly slapped with a missle from low orbit and have zero chance of retaliating against the pixel that is flying above my maximum range. I've been able to kill A-10s and I have got a decent amount of SU-25s already also. but the only drones you can kill are the ones piloted by people who don't have the keys bound and are flying tree level with it trying to rebind keys frantically.

Man its gaijin. When i played ground battles before all the chopper bullshit became mixed battles i enjoyed ground really much. But these days mixed battles is mixed battles. @@creforce I dont mind helicopters and planes in ground RB as a concept. I think the combined arms is exactly what makes warthunder so special and sets it apart from every other game. The issue is that you need to play an AA vehicle to counter them, but the issue is either you spawn in a tank first and get clapped by a heli because no one else is playing aa, or you spawn in AA first and then not a single aircraft shows up. With SAMs i usually have no problems countering helicopters if they pop up individually, but often i end up being overwhelmed by the amount of aircraft up. Jets have to put themselves at risk of AA to get to the battle, drones do not, they spawn right above and can engage. The only effective counter to drones is spawning in a jet with AA missiles. Its not a bad idea, just poorly executed, as usual

Pretty sure the best SAM in the game is Swedish or French, depending on who you ask though. 9M311-1 gets clapped tremendously by VT-1. All IR guided missiles, from Strelas to Iglas to Stingers to Mistrals, are relatively bad in comparison to SACLOS ones. This is probably to avoid the point-click-kill problem and benefit skillful players who are paying attention. It's a pretty deliberate gameplay decision. Stinger is one of the better guided missiles along with Type 93 and Mistral, as it has superior G overload and tracking to Igla and Strela, its only Soviet competitors, which are among the worst SAMs in the entire game lol. All IR missiles in War Thunder kinda suck though, either because they're the old, original, 1980's versions instead of the modern 2000's versions or because they're boring to use and free kills if overpowered, so they're balanced by being automatic by being mediocre (not "bad", just average). For such greatly obvious "Russian bias", why is 2S6 third or second place in the top tier SAMs? Depending on how you play it, it's worse or better than ADATS, because it's a better SAM and a worse tank killer. It can barely approach the ITO 90 in terms of mobility and SAM though. But why use facts when you can use a tired meme that was last relevant 8 years ago? Here is a factual representation of Top Tier: Best tanks: Germany and Sweden Best SAMs: France and Sweden Best scouts: America and Germany Best tank destroyers: America and Germany Best IFV/troop carrier: America, Sweden, and Britain Best CAS: America and Israel Best helicopters: USSR Best fighters: America, Germany, Britain, and Japan The USSR is mostly noticeable for having the highest number of runners-up or mediocrities I guess? Its best isn't as good as the Kings of the respective vehicle trees, but its worst isn't as bad either. Clearly large amounts of Russian bias, being number two or three at "basically everything". USSR is just a very safe option for players who just want vehicles that sort of work, with the exception of helicopters, where the USSR's quantity of helicopters available and their weapons makes them dominant. Maybe if America gets the RAH-66 or something it will be a bit better, but America doesn't have the raw lineup of Soviet helicopters, so it would just be one more of like two good helicopters (AH-1Z and AH-64D) versus the four or so Russian (Mi-28NM, Mi-28N, Ka-52, Ka-50, Ka-52). But outside of helicopters, which you can argue is Russian bias because the Russians make more models of weird attack helicopters than the Western countries, there isn't anything that really stands out as being ultra good or competitive for each tier. T-80BVM is basically a Type 10 for low IQ brainlets, 2S6 gets murderdozered by .50 cals, BMP Berezhok is also bullied by "literally anything" including random explosions detonating the missiles, Su-17 is trash, MiG-23 is a dumpster fire that makes F-11F look agile, and that's about it. IOW Russia is only good if your opponents are mouth breathers. The fact that most players are mouth breathers isn't a ringing endorsement because there will occasionally be that one Japanese Type 10 that drives off three cliffs to cross the map and shoot you in the ass because you shot at him with a DShK and proceed to slaughter half your team and win the game. tl;dr skill issue get good

You spawn too close though, you have to be aiming inside the small box for the missile to see the laser and at the altitude you spawn at if you are flying level that box is going to be outside the map. You have to angle down to actually target the battlefield (or waste time getting distance or losing altitude).

The spam of drones was pretty awful at first, but after memorizing the spawn location of the drones, it’s not super awful since you can just insta-kill them with proper SAMs. Ammo can be a legitimate problem though. I’m never going anywhere near 9.7 ever again though.

If you switch to IRST it doesn't give an RWR warning. I usually switch to IRST and increase the scope scale out to 16km as soon as I spawn in the 975

Haven't played since the update, but honestly the only way drones seem "toxic" is that your teammates could waste nearly 800SP on a useless piece of trash instead of an actual plane. The only reason I can see anyone wanting to spawn a drone, outside of curiosity, is someone who wanted to do CAS gameplay but was unwilling to do any plane grinding whatsoever, so these function like the "random" planes you can spawn in naval.

Playing SPAA can feel unfair when your shooting at CAS players who don't know how to deal with it. Any KA-50 or Mig-27 worth their weight are nearly unkillable when played correctly. IE KA's setting off proxy fuses with their own rockets, and Migs in the stratosphere. Not to mention the fact that most of them can shrug off several hits in a row...

Hey Odd, was doing the same thing today and I have a little tip for the Roland SAM systems. The vehicles equipped with it (XM975, FlaRakPz-1, FlaRakRad, Roland 1) have both a radar and an IRST. The IRST has a detection range of 10km. The trick for me is to auto-lock the target in 3rd person first with radar to get bearing, then focus in on it without radar (if possible) until they get within 10km. At that point, I will lock them in IRST as not to give myself away that I'm tracking them (you can switch between radar and IRST at will without losing lock provided the target is within range of both systems).

Drones are peak gameplay - you spend 3 MBT worth of SP, if you get 2 kills you earn 250-300 SP you have two options - spend 10 minutes returning to base or J-out with negative 300-500 SP

For launching the hellfires it seems to have a problem finding the laser to lock before it shoots. If you use the sight stabilization control it seems to work without flaw.

Seems the game treated the drones like aircraft with targeting pod, so the hellfires use AGM controls setting to fire, not using helicopter control setting, making it confusing at first.

On some SAM (I think the XM is one of them) you can change from Radar to IRST, so the planes get no RWR warning. Tunguska, FlaRak, ADATS comes to mind and quite a few others.

If you have the upgraded rounds for that LVAD, check the belt, it does not mention having tracer rounds anymore.

The lack of tracers on the LAV-AD is a bummer if you dont have the laser rangefinder, but it also is very advantageous to shoot air that's AA hunting. I think the optical guidance doesn't upset their radar warnings too, just dont turn on the stinger lock.

I think a balancing thing is: the drones don’t count as vehicles so you can’t camp at an airfield if ur teams dead. Give the drones a spawn near the helicopter base and around 500meter high

The drones need to spawn farther away. It's ridiculous spawning right on top of SPAA and having to take a steep dive to fire. But They're a great addition so everyone can have a CAS option without requiring a grind for aircraft. And the scout drones are legit for top tier high tech gameplay.

Hellfire missiles like to have a target lock before firing. You can lock on to an enemy tank/aircraft by enabling sight stabilization twice, once to stabilise the sight and a second time while pointing the crossair at the enemy, this will lock on to them and automatically track them for you. All that's left to do then is just lob the Hellfire and wait a few seconds.

You can lock on to tanks in the camera view. When your laser locking and a little box appears when you’re pointing at a tank you can lock onto it so you don’t have to guide it in with your mouse. It tracks them too so if they move then so does the missile

I can’t speak for them, but for me personally, I just find it fun to RTB, land safely and go back up in the sky to fight again I don’t play high BR but I do fly a useless plane in ground RB to deny CAS, the BI I have fun playing it and it’s really challenging And that’s all it comes down to this game, try and have fun in a pain inducing game

Gaijin removed the tracers from that vehicle... for no reason at all. The real tank had tracers. It still says it has tracers when you chose ammo. But they removed the tracers in a patch. Because they are Gaijin.

​@@bighobo7745 I would say not cockpit locking planes in Ground RB is the incredible advantage when pilots often wouldn't have a clue until they are getting hit or see laser beams flash past their cockpit visual, which would still be a harder challenge of dodging not being able to auto spot the AA's position and angle of attack.

There seems to be less and less tanks in ground battles and more and more aircraft like the cancer that are drones and heli's sitting well out harms way launching missile after missile after missile and the typical CAS jets.

My favourite 10.0 lineup, just add the M1 Abrams and a few more vehicles and you habe the perfect lineup. I have 9 vehicles in this lineup.

OddBawz you should make a video on the FV4005 at BR 11.0 and see how it goes, im sure lots of tanks will still be one shot

They should have just added lightly armed scout planes with the ability to scout. But limit the scout planes scout to being mini map only spot that's the last known postion. Then they could have worked their way up to drones.

Drones are like something you get in Arcade ground battles, not realistic.
