I'm not familiar with this type of A class, but in 4 years a vital module to go bad 😔. No wonder the customer stated that out of the blue there was no crank. In some cars at that location it gets hot. So eather there was a bad manufacturing or bad design. Most times bad manufacturing will not be a reason to change the part number of the part. So bad design is my guess. Now to be fare, Mercedes could have decided to use this module in other new vehicles or they might have changed something for the newer facelifts. This could be a reason to redo the design of the module in order to work for all versions of cars. Or they messed up in the first place and do not accept the blame, to be fare .

For me as a diagnostic technician at MB, it is incomprehensible that so many workshops had problems finding the faults. Outstanding video! On the original module I would trace the red/pink wire from the connector to the IC that controls it. possibly a solid state relay or a mosfet. Next check datasheet, find input and probe the input with a scope. Pretty much the same fault finding technique but on a board level. For the cost of the replacement module it may not be worth it but it gives a closure and satisfies curiosity 😅

What no one failed to notice is that you left out struggling to remove the console lid release button trim & no doubt broke the plastic catches 😂 I don’t blame you if you did their a pig to get off.

I just wish that more people can be that way and help others. Its really sad, not because of the car sitting for one year, but because we as people are worse than animals, we are monsters who would go so low to screw one another over some pieces of paper called "money". Instead of that we can just help each other, like you are doing. God bless you for that man! Great bit of diagnosing there Dan! I think possibly a mosfet in one of the ICUs must have gone bad so that wire would never get connected to earth. Just about impossible to fix, so you did right buying a new one.

I suspect the same, and its proberbly fixable but these modules have some known issues ( this is not one of them as far as i know) and the new partnumber should be better. And it was quite affordable

Nice fix Most likely problem is one of the surface mount devices is faulty. They can be repaired, but special fine tip soldering iron is required, & use of an oscilloscope.
