Well, not saying it’s a good thing that the repair shops cutting corners but since the insurance companies introduced “gestuurd schadeherstel” ( commanded damage repair) here many years ago in the Netherlands, I’ve seen my share of glued back together headlights brackets and many other things that should be replaced and where probably being charged as new. So they could get a bit more profit out of it because the insurance companies squeezed almost all out of it.

Dan fixed it again! No surprise there. Aftermarket parts have always been dodgy, but the last few years they've REALLY become terrible. Always use OEM if possible. Classic car guys really have it bad- it's almost impossible to find decent basic electrical parts.

I agree. Typically a second hand OEM sensor from scrapyard is better than new no-name replacement part. Especially for parts such as ultrasound sensors that have no wear parts.

I'm sure it was done on insurance. Anyway what wrong with wanting to have everything working properly? You can cut with dull knife but what's the point? Also probably other driver's assists as well didn't work properly, such as emergency braking. This type of car shape is hard do park reverse with mirrors alone because you can't judge distance when there's trunk behind the glass (it seems that you already touched it when you have about 0,5-1meter still to go.

@bigragu6828 "And, oh yeah, a car for a person that can’t park a roller skate with assistance." Guess you still have a choke, adjust your timing on the go and have to pump up your tyres every other day. And drive drunk. What the F is a roller skate love? It's your round. Don't forget, it's got assistance. I think your blurred mind meant to utter, WITHOUT assistance. Good day my love.

@@stevekelly5166 what crawled up your rear end to make my comment offend you???!!!! As a matter of fact, my 66 Pontiac does, indeed, have a choke, one mirror on driver door and I park that bitch in tight spots. Also, I drive heavy duty wrecker. I can backup a loaded tractor trailer on my hook, without assistance. That’s what years of driving does. It gives you skills to perform easy and complex tasks. Your turn now, my love. You are probably doing voice to text, because you need assistance with that simple of a task, as pushing letters on a screen. Now give Dan the respect he deserves and don’t reply.

Interesting problem and nice diag & fix. Cool to see the fixed parking assist in action :) I guess the price of original parts creates market for cheap and sometimes bad alternatives, but sometimes dealerships have cheaper alternatives too, equal to original but a bit cheaper. For example Kia, at least here in Finland, offers "2nd line" parts for older, out of warranty vehicles. This monday my car (2016 Kia Rio) was in engine oil change service (smaller shop, not Kia dealer), and I bought the oil filter indeed as a 2nd line part from dealership. Looks exactly like original Kia filter, but no Kia badges anywhere even in the cardboard box. Even before, cabin air filter was also 2nd line part, installed in bigger service at Kia dealer. This time I replaced the cabin air filter myself, and bought Mann Filter part from car parts store.

I had this kind of issue on multiple brands, not only on BMW. Also on Mercedes. Even genuine parking sensors can fail over time and cause short circuit. On some BMW-s(E65,E60) this kind of short can damage the PDC module. A small transistor fails due that. It can be replaced, but before reinstalling the module, short circuit needs to be eliminated.

Oh hey, welcome to my world! I have the unmitigated joy of dealing with this kind of thing all the time, and it is very annoying. I'm shocked to hear the sensors come pre-painted, though! I can't say I've ever seen that. Lucky! With 6-sensor systems like this, often times the outer corner sensors will be a different part number from the inner four sensors, and the two are not interchangeable. I run into this a lot on GM trucks and SUVs, body shops just yarfing all the sensors back in wherever and then it takes down the entire park sensing system. :(

I recently replaced the crank sensor on a VW Polo 9N 1.4 hatch. The first part sent had the right sensor and right connector, but the cable was too short. I then returned the new sensor still in the plastic wrap, and ordered one from a different supplier. That was the correct one. The workshop book doesn’t have written you need to pull half the engine off to get it out. Nor do they have written that the crank sensor on the VW bby engine is under the starter motor. Fairly straightforward job, but new sealing rings are required for the intake manifold, as this has to be removed so the starter motor can be removed and the crank sensor removed, then new one fitted.
