I once had a kit made by a no-face company called 'Zozee Toys'. This was a 1/48 scale kit. It cost 8 dollars, 4 pounds in UK. It was quite literally a snap kit. It just was mostly just snapping together the parts. It was like 30% glue only. It had decent detail and basically no flash. The only flash I found was on the inside of parts. Pretty good for a nobody company.

It does build into a decent kit, some aftermarket or scratchbuilding would sort out the detailing if the builder so wished.

Fantastic Job Model Minutes! You have done a great job on this large-scale Hurricane kit. I curious to know if you ever intended to make a diorama for it? With a set of 54mm (1/32 scale) RAF pilot or ground crew figures. Or for that matter make a 1/32 scale Supermarine Spitfire kit? It seems like a must for a scale model aircraft builder. Build a model of a Hawker Hurricane. Then you must make a model of a Supermarine Spitfire, or vice versa. Anyway, keep up the great work.

I enjoy what I guess is the essence of this hobby which is putting things together, so a low part count won't cut it for me. Having said that, I think one need always factor in the price and I guess a kit this large with good quality, fit and detail is priced accordingly and reasonably, Italeri's new Macchi MC 202 has double the price tag and what you'd expect, lots of parts, PE, 3d decals and lots of other goodies. Size costs and detail costs and so a manufacturer may choose to offer a kit to people who value size and aren't injterested in extra detail and the price tag that goes with it. That's how most of us ventured out nto the world of 1/32 at first, with cheaper kits who's price reflected the extra size only.

I think that is a very wise look at the world of modelling. I'm from the era when photo etch wasn't around,and if you wanted extras, you scratch build them as best as you can. I've watched a couple of build videos today where most of the PE and 3D printed extras were almost invisible once the kit was finished, but effectively doubled the price of the kit.

Great video Matt! A couple of thoughts: I agree with your comment about the chipping being a /bit/ overboard - especially being a night fighter I think the ground crew would repaint anything that might reflect any ambient light. You didn't mention you masked and painted the landing light clear parts.. I'm assuming with translucent paints? Given that as you said there is no flying mode I think it's a bit disappointing kit has no flat spots on the tyres. Re the lack of engine detail and the engine being obscured. I think the cowling on top is a separate piece so if a modeller chose it could be removed to show the engine inside - perhaps as part of a diorama with mechanics working on the engine?
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes Жыл бұрын
Thanks :) For the navigation parts i painted the internal areas and left the clear parts paint-free. But yes, having fully round tyres would require modification to make them look like they are under weight on the ground. The engine cowling part could be left off, but then an engine would need to be built from scratch (i'm not sure an aftermarket exists yet?) as there is no included engine in the kit, just those mounting points for the exhausts pipes

I know you were selfcritiquing about the chipping, but on a matt black night fighter, it's going to look quite contrasty shall we say, and I think it looked realistically done. I'd have to google for images but I would think the four outboard Brownings would have the red muzzle cover patches over the muzzles, not broken through as you portray them here. Eleven out of ten for the stretched sprue aerial wire, I bet that's a skill most modellers don't even know about! Well filmed, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I went off the instructions for the markings on the outboard MGs and they were off-centre on those. If I'm honest, I'm not sure that all MkIIbs had those panels marked so leaving them off could be an option
@Simon_Nonymous
@Simon_Nonymous Жыл бұрын
good point; I meant they were all fully patched over, rather than the alignment of the square patches to the muzzles, my poor English sorry! I think this was because they fired from an open bolt in .303", so the patch was there to prevent overcooling of the guns@@ModelMinutes but that's a very very minor detail old boy.

Came out nicely in terms of the paint and weathering but for a 32nd scale kit it is a bit too simple, unless you want to build something bigger that isn't overly technical in nature because you don't want to deal with all the fiddly parts a smaller well detailed kit would have. I've just got back into building WW2 72nd scale fighters and I've lost or broken many smaller parts.

I thought that the prop blades were wood on these so metallic chips not appropriate?
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 7 күн бұрын
you may well be correct. I can't say I know the specifics of each prop type the different variants of the Hurricane (or other aircraft for that matter) had. I made the assumption that as a later aircraft it would have a metal one, but it may well still have a wooden one. If it is indeed wooden, metal chipping would naturally not be appropriate. However, if I use a little modeller's licence and suggest that perhaps for some reason this particular one had to make do with a replacement metal prop due to unforseen circumstances (perhaps a lack of appropriate replacements and they used what was available) i think that could work too. After all, i'm not too fussed about historical accuracy, and if I was, I don't think i would every build anything lol

@ModelMinutes

Thanks! I imagine that it is down to the release schedule - they usually leave it at least 12 months before introducing a variation which prevents the market from being flooded and over saturated with the same kind of kits on the shelves. Hopefully enough time has passed that stock for this kit has dropped and now it can be replaced by the newer version

Not stalking you honest, watching your channel while working on my Mac - Just have to point out in your Hurricane build - You are drilling holes in the red gun port cover decals with a VERY SHARP KNIFE WITH YOUR FINGERS BEHIND THE DECAL!!! I am just pointing this out as a safety issue - many people watch your channel and I wouldn't want them to follow your example. I have learned from bitter (and painful!) experience to keep my precious pinkies out of the way as far as possible from sharp tools. I still manage to cut myself occasionally (recently on the edge of a piece of brass etched frame, bloody hurt!) but I will generally place any items that need cutting or drilling on a cutting mat, scrap wood or cardboard for safety. I think it would be a good idea for you to mention this in one of your future builds, the funny thing about 'common sense' is it ain't so common!
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 4 ай бұрын
I think in the past couple of years i have only stabbed myself twice with my knife whilst modelling. Sometimes I use a safer method of cutting with a knife but it is hard to get the angle right with a camera in the way - in these cases I may not actually be applying a great deal of pressure (or enough to hurt myself) merely to give an impression of the action that I am having to take. People should of course take their own precautions and techniques into consideration to ensure that they are keeping themselves safe
@baanibarnes9711
@baanibarnes9711 4 ай бұрын
@@ModelMinutes 'I know what I'm doing!' Famous last words! I do appreciate the camera angle thing, I just think you have to be careful as an influencer, you could get someone coming back at you saying 'He did it like that on his video so I thought it must be safe'. Just saying if nothing else, you need to cover yourself.

Love airfix as they got me into modeling, BUT I do think they have become tunnel visioned. how many Spitfires, huricanes, Lancasters have they released? Spitfire mk 1, 2, & V have been done to death, yet TSR2 the last hope for the British only aircraft industry has had just 2 kits , the 1/72 ( to be honest a reasonable if small) not available in over 14 years, and in 1/48 (a problematic kit with fit and delail issues) not available in 10 years (though released as the short run STRATOS 4 with extra parts) . with 2025 and the 60th aniversary of TSR2 succesfull 24 flights and shameful axing, just round the corner, its a shame airfix havent announced a new laser scan kit or even just the rerelease of the existing kits. ok the 1/48 had fit issues, that hasnt stopped them rereleasing their vintage kits line many of which hav fit, flash and detail issues. how about a poll to see if anyone else would like a TSR2 rerelease or scan release !!! but then would Airfix listen ? I have built airfix spitfires and me 109s in 1/72,48,35,24 scales. i have seen them sink to the low of rereleasing the same time over and over , same kit new decals instead of one release and then decal sheets, TSR2 needs a new release, maybe 1/35.

They way I understand it, the popular kits like the spitfire etc are the money earners which generate the revenue that allows them to create other kits like the swift, walrus, their new range of 1/35 vehicles etc It just takes time for them to get around to designing and producing all the models that people want
