They are really nothing more than animated controlled kinetic energy , yet any time I see good people (nostalgic people) restoring rebuilding , and well just giving life back to these machines it gets a bit emotional , it is the fitting thing to do with these machines that have performed their duties . The machines want to run (hell they want to fly again) so letting them breath again and even if it is on the ground gives hope , to us all for a future .

I have been amazed for a lifetime at the level of development aircraft had achieved by the close of WWII. We weren't even 50 years into powered flight and yet we were screaming through the skies at over 400 MPH, while 70 MPH in a personal automobile was "screaming" on the open roads in most places. And the jet age was thrust (pun intended) upon us almost instantly and fairly well developed and maturing rapidly less than 2 decades later. Its because of the massive torque reaction that occurs with small planes with powerful engines, the engine will spin the plane as much as the prop with a single prop, the contra rotating props cancel each others torque reaction and make the plane much easier to fly since you don't have to cater for added roll caused by the engine and prop

Its due to trying to get more blade area onto a 2450hp engine without the propeller tips going supersonic. It counters P-factor to some extent, but doesn't cancel it completely. Various things were tried; some which were retained such as differing front and rear propeller diameters and blade pitch.

Why did all of these stationary engines have the counter rotating props ?
@davisrs14 жыл бұрын
To prevent the prop from flipping the plane over to the right. The Spitfire and P-51 had troubles handling the power of the 1650 CID Merlin. When the later Spitfire XIX and P-51XR came out with the 2240 CID Griffon, the engine not only had much more prop torque, but torqued the opposite direction so counter rotating props were put on to prevent pilots from flipping their planes over from super torque opposite to what they were used to.

One prop cancels out the rotational force from the other prop.
@heshere1664 жыл бұрын
@@gavinbarham542 Thanks
@wackowacko89314 жыл бұрын
@@heshere166 That isn't the only reason. Two counter rotating props increase efficiency by the scissoring action (not a technical term) increasing thrust and aircraft top speed. It allows you to use two props instead of one large prop - the reason that its important is because as a prop gets bigger, the propeller tips start to exceed the speed of sound which tends to chew up prop tips. It also gets harder to hold a prop in the hub, due to the rotating center of mass being further and further from the center of the motor making it harder and harder to spin. The swing of a large prop generally forces the aircraft to have taller, heavier and more robust landing gear, because the swing of the prop forces the engine to be further and further away from the ground to keep from plowing the ground with the prop tips. One of the reasons jets were developed soon after the war was because propellers can't propel aircraft faster than the speed of sound - so it limited the top speed of aircraft to a maximum of 595 mph, and the military always wants higher, faster and farther operating aircraft. Russia's turboprop TU-95 Bear aircraft, commonly known as the fastest prop aircraft ever used counter-rotating props, it's commonly listed extreme top speed is 595 mph which is well below the speed of sound - and because it used props, they had to constantly maintain the props to enable that top speed. It needed turboshaft engines, because to approach that speed required 12,000 hp on each turboshaft to spin that dual prop to attain that speed. Even the biggest piston aircraft engine ever made, the Wright 4360, only made a maximum of 4300hp with multiple modifications, usually making no more than 3500 hp in normal operations. Typically, using piston engines it is not really possible to exceed 450 mph in level flight, even using counter-rotating props. The largest counter rotating prop engine (that I am aware of) is the Griffon engine. There are more reasons why they used counter rotating props, these are just the top few reasons for them.
