Picked up three of the Alakazam about six months ago. It was SO hard to get good copies of it. I resold several and some even returned which were listed at near mint but were not even close. Finally got one that could be a 9. Still looking out for pristine copies

BTW it finally struck me why I bad print quality isnt better than good print quality, even for investors. And that is because the grading scale relatively is subjective and, as such, a "10" is not the end all be all. Even without restructuring grades, you know about the Becket black label and CGC pristine 10s. Even if 100% of cards would be a gem-mt 10, that just means the Becket black and CGC Pristine 10 market would open up even more and those would command the premium that a regular gem-mt 10 commanded in generations prior. I would rather get high quality cards 90% of the time and chase a Pristine (if I was into that) than get shit quality cards 75% of the time just because a 10 used to mean alot to people. As such, thinking that bad print quality is good for investors is detrimental and further ostracizes investors from the Pokemon community; it is rooted in an antiquated PSA system that believes their grading criteria for a 10 is the end all be all for collection/worth.

I’m a data guy, I think that’s an understatement LOL!! So I use data to take my feeling and emotions out of investing. I’ve always felt like the data tells me lower Gem Rates =‘s Higher Prices and greater rates of returns in most cases. But if we unpack it a bit it can be more complex then that!! For example that theory can easily be disrupted by a high demand for a card. Moonbreon is a great example, almost 13K PSA 10’s but the price is still crazy high!! Now compare PSA 10 prices for VSTAR universe and Jap 151 Vs Crown Zenith and Eng 151… English prices are higher. Not because those Jap sets aren’t crazy popular, because they are, but because PSA 10s are a dime a dozen due to Japanese print quality. On the flip side look at Obsidian Flames, crazy low Gem Rate but because there isn’t much interest in it the card prices are still crazy low. I’m not sure there is a right or wrong answer but I love hearing different thoughts and opinions!!One of the things I love about this hobby is that so many people can find so much joy in so many different ways!! Collectors, Investors, Players and everything in between!! Always love a good counter comment like this that makes me dig deep and challenge any existing thoughts!! I appreciate it more then I can say!!

How do you gather prices on a monthly basis? Do you have a subscription somewhere that gives you an api that allows you to pull data automatically? Do you go to each page and copy and paste prices manually?
