I'm 37 years old. I had 2 complete sets of base set. All cards were kept in binders and never played. My parents sold them at a yard sale. Makes me sick to know what I had including 2 1st edition charizards. I started collecting again at the end of may. I have 41 booster boxes now. I only buy ETBs and UPCs to rip.

Wouldn't that eliminate the "fun" in collecting cards though? I feel like if you're going to have a hobby, it would be unfortunate if that hobby just chews away at you. Unless of course you have tons of money and you just don't care but if you're budgeting and spending your hard earned money on collectibles, I feel like it's important to keep it fun and engaging.

I saw that exact post you're referring to about the dude trying to sell his collection for his dogs medical bills and felt the exact same way. Being a home owner, having 4 doggos currently, and 2 more in the past that went through several cancer journeys before they passed; it definitely drives the point home about having an emergency fund, risk tolerance, and not letting your hobbies get the best of you. Pro tip: Pokemon cards werent made for people to try and profit money from reselling them. Another pro tip, opening packs or buying boxes in an attempt to get a good card to sell is quite literally no different to going to a casino and playing a fruit machine

@@pokeoz91 there's a big different between a piece of history and trading cards. If the cards were centuries old and still in decent condition then fair play but I doubt you're selling 17th century Pokémon cards

@funkychunk1343 and pokemon was designed as a collectable card game. It has the very word collectable in it. It's functionality is dual purpose. To play and to collect. And whenever there's a collecting aspect to anything, it's going to bring value. Same can be said about nearly every CCG ever made.

32 years old and love the video. Completely agree with most of it as well. I’ve had some bargains from TikTok lately. Paradox rift less than half RRP. I tend to buy two of everything so I can sell one keep one when they appreciate. I track everything and my collection is worth around double what I paid (over the last 3 years). I’ve also started grading and flipping. Spend £300 on a sub, sell enough to make £300 back, keep the rest. Keep up the great work mate appreciate it

I love the comment regarding how there will always be someone who has (or spends) more. More than absolutely anything, people need to find ways to invest/collect in a way that works for them and brings them happiness. Don't measure yourself against others because 9/10 times you will end up disappointed, and the time you aren't disappointed won't give you any real meaningful satisfaction or joy.

Lol, 99% of the time you will fail! Not 9/10! Yeah, when I got back into Pokemon last year I started spending haarrdd trying to complete a vintage PSA 10 Japanese holo collection. And it burnt me out. And I spent money way faster than I was comfortable with. And now I feel burnt out, and am not interested in keeping it, and just want to switch to casual collecting!

Im back in the hobby like many because of 151. I have personally concluded that the UPC for that particular set is the way to go since the pull rates of booster packs aren't great making the guaranteed promo products more valuable in the long run. Then again could be wrong but I bought a couple boxes. Still got money on the sidelines in case they reprint and make the prices tank. Also, since I love opening the packs I have a simple rule. If the box I receive isn't in a good shape I can open it. That way it makes the hobby still about the cards and it stays fun for me. Great video, cheers mate !

Great channel found you recently and can't thank you enough for the insight and knowledge that you share, it's really cool to see investment strategy applied to the hobby in an accessible way. I just wanted to share that I found that buying singles that I was purchasing what was needed for a deck rather than a copy of a card. A lot of the time people are pushed into "needing" x amount of each card rather than just getting one for the collection ( which just sinks more money). So another thing I do is remind myself that I'm not in the competitive scene and to collect for myself and focus the price of an induvial card rather than a playset.

Opportunity does not always come scheduled. Have extra money to the side for surprise opportunities like the 4th wave of evolving skies ETBs. Only had them 4-5 months and almost doubled my investment

great video, touched on all points perfectly. one that always frustrates me to read about is people having to sell early cause of a financial emergency and they take the stance that its an emergency so it wasnt avoidable, seen this in everything from silver stacking to stocks and crypto, always have an emergency/savings fund! oh and if i was starting from scratch it would be english booster boxes/cases only (with the odd special japanese set or anything thats special or hype like eevee gym boxes or celebrations stuff etc) booster boxes may be "boring" to collect but they store and sell well.

You were talking about the risk of 151 getting reprinted. What affect does reprinting have on a set? Is it usually a short dip and climb back up in price at a later date, (I have heard don't worry about reprints, and I've heard the opposite too) or does it permanently damage a set? Do you have any examples from recent past?

investing in yourself will prevent you from just fomo’ing over stuff and knowing when the investment is worth going “all in” i personally keep money at hand until i see something i’m relatively certain is worth going in heavy. when this 151 pc etbs dropped couple days ago i immediately bought 4 and 2 upcs to get the squirtle promos. dropped about 500 but i needed to have that available and not just spending over things “everyone is doing” and knowing what will appraise well overtime bc i’ve done my homework and love the hobby. great advice like always

Great tips once again, I love that the channel is getting some momentum. I also saw that reddit post, it was pretty sad to see. For me, it can be difficult with the temptation of opening a box or not. I'm trying to get better with that. I recently opened a Japanese 151 Booster Box. Independently of the cards I pulled, I was planning to keep it sealed so I regret it now. It would have been a lot more valuable kept sealed.

Walmart has booster bundles of 151 for $28. Bought 16 of them, 10 to store and 6 to open. Hope they send 10 in the sealed display box. Saving them for the future when I get bored and what to experience the fun I’ve been having getting back into Pokémon cards.

I'm 36 years old and I sold my heavily played base set cards about a month ago. Since then I started collecting again and I've spent well over what I should have, mainly because of fomo. I've bought older psa cards and sealed ETB's and booster boxes. But I also bought a lot of stuff to rip and quickly found out that it is the wrong way to go, if you wanna make money from the product. I'm just getting into Pokémon collecting/investing (well since 1999 lol) and I'm also not totally sure what I should do. Obviously opening packs is the most fun. However, I get that if I'm viewing this whole endeavor as purely an investment I definitely shouldn't touch/open boosters or boxes. The rare chance that they produce more than the unopened pack isn't worth the raw cash potential of not touching it at all. However, this isn't very fun. Buy a box that is factory sealed and stick it in my closet/garage. So I kind of want to have a balance of opening a few packs purely for fun and storing some as an investment.

I just saw that same post on Reddit about the guy needing money for his dog. I commented this “Yeah that’s the problem with products like these is that they’re valuable when people actually want to buy them lol. I have 100+ packs of ES I’m trying to sell, and I barely got any takers even at $6 per pack. I mean theoretically it should be a $600+ stack I have, but in reality I’ve maybe made $80 off of them in the past two months. I only sell locally which is probably my problem, I’ve just had enough bad experiences with shipping and buyers to try that again.” Basically what I’m getting at is that cash is king basically everywhere, you can’t pay for most things (like doctors appointments) with Pokémon cards directly. It’s a very lengthy process to make money from them. I personally just use the money I get from selling stuff to buy more lol.

A friend that ones an LGS always helps and then just keep an eye on target, or k mart online, they sometimes clear dead stock. K mart recently had LO blisters at $4AUD each. And then ebay as well for deals.

Well first let's get something straight; buying pokemon products is not investing. It is speculation, aka gambling. The asset doesn't do work or generate revenue. Buying commercial property that generates revenue via rent is investing. Now go spend your money appropriately.

Only been watching a few months, poke oz is different interacts with every comment building something very unique here I think if you believe init you should go for it I did the same as oz bought 5 boxes of jap 151 overall cost £135 a box and you worry can I actually make money on this investment this set will go to the moon will be £200 by January I said it on another video I think a box of brilliant stars would be good to open very strong trainer gallery and underrated charizard for now and I’m not even a charizard lover!
