Good vid. Seems like you had something for a bit there on the kill right at the kayak. Were you killing the chatterbait when you'd get to the front of the trees and let it pause or was there no real pattern with that?

I think a lot of those casts were so short that the fish didn't have time to get the bait when they started tracking it, and inevitably grabbed it once I slowed down.

Get some fish grips so you can keep the fish in the water while you get set for the pictures. It will tire them out too and is much better for the fish then keeping them out of the water that long.

Digging this channel, just found it today. I fish from a kayak, but mainly fly fish for smallmouth here in the frozen north. Got some baitcasters going on now to get the bait down a bit deeper and mix things up, cool that you explain some technique in the video. How much does winning a tournament like this bring in? I know the boat guys are competing for big money in many cases.

Honestly it's so different you can't even compare the two. Having done both with good success, I'd say they are equally challenging. Two entirely different approaches looking for the same outcome.

I'm surprised at the tail pinching for pics that get you disqualified in some of the events in my local area. I disagree on the fish handling/care about keeping them out of the water longer to "tire" them out. But then again most bass anglers dont care much for bass to begin with 😬

If I would have tried to take a picture of a fish after only fighting it for 3 seconds, it would jump off my board over and over, and beat itself up all over the kayak. Fishing is sticking the hook in the mouth of a fish and dragging it out of the water no matter what way you slice it, I do my best to take care of them!
