Big rig rollover on freeway (42,000lb coil falls off trailer)

A tractor trailer hauling a 42,000lb large coil overturned, causing the trailer to almost break in half. We responded with our 50ton and 75ton rotators to handle this job. Step one was to move the coil out of the way so we can upright the tractor and trailer in one shot.
Once upright, we split the units and towed the tractor with our 50ton rotator, while our 75ton rotator lifted the trailer and set it onto our Landoll. The company sent another truck to pick up the coil, which we loaded for him. I got to use my new synthetic rigging equipment which worked amazing; technology sure has come a long way for towers.

@SpyingDutchman Agreed, these dudes could probably do what they do with just 1 truck, but if ya got em, bill em out when you can. Can't really stand Pratt, don't see why people are so impressed with him. I've done more with less and seen older ops work miracles with suicide controlled Holmes mechanicals that are older than me.

@ I won't bash any other company, different strokes for different folks. As far as equipment goes, I could probably do most of what I do in a single heavy if that's all you gave me. But what it be as precise, smooth, controlled and fast? Hell no lol, it would take hours longer and I'd for sure have to block more lanes and risk over loading my truck. Our primary goal is safe and quick clearance. No one in the world is giving out trophies for using a less amount of trucks.
4 жыл бұрын
@@PepesTowingService I understand the YT rules, that's cool. You guys are in a very heavily populated metropolis where the highways are packed to the gills, I've been to CA. to visit family and it's insane the volume those roads see. So speed is key and you've basically got a captive audience. I'm in northern N.Y. and nobody is footing a bill for 3 trucks when 1 can do it, were lucky to have a 3rd guy on recoveries in 1 50T. I guess that's why guys with so many trucks won't talk pricing, and it's true nobody's handing out trophies for using less equipment but we don't work for trophies either. Getting the road open and surviving is job 1, job number 2 is getting paid without having to get a collection agency involved and a reasonable bill gets that job done beautifully. I know what a 35 and a 50 cost on a rollover here so I can ballpark what most jobs cost and I bet most o/o's here would leave their rig in a ditch and set it on fire to collect insurance before paying those bills on 3 heavy's. Doing more with less makes for a better operator, we got a generation coming up that had their common sense stolen by technology, it's scary.

Great recovery guys. Brings me back to my 11 years of steel hauling from WI to MI a few moons ago. I can relate to the heavy coil & busted up trailer. Most of the flatbeds today are mostly aluminum. They flex. They flex a lot. They can actually be bent up into almost looking like a pretzel, & when you release the freight weight, they spring back straight again. This shit scares the shit out of me. I remember actually going on off ramps with large curves in them & actually watching the coil shifting it's weight on the trailer sometimes causing wheels to come up in the middle of a turn. Learned real quick to slow her down. I did have a trailer break just like this one once when they loaded a 48,700 pound coil on my trailer. I was out in the parking lot, chaining the coil down & all of a sudden the trailer just jumped. Enough to scare me into looking at the frame structure underneath. Sure as shit, she had cracked. Right where the coil was sitting. I was able to get unloaded & spent the next 2 days figuring out what I was going to do with the trailer. JUNK!! Glad it happened before I set sail. Love your videos, keep up the good work.

@@arlisspropertyservicesllc5943 "Some" trailers are designed for that. Considering that the frame rail broke in half, I don't think that this is one of those trailers. I've been driving for 40 years and hauled a lot of coiled metal like this. I have personally seen 2 trailer frame fails like this at the Port of Portland. Fortunately, neither of them made it out of the port terminal.

They have to set those coils in the center of the trailer to get the weight distributed between the trailer and tractor axles but it's very hard on the trailer, especially on a rough road.

They should probably use shorter trailers for this...
@tiredoldmechanic1791
@tiredoldmechanic1791 3 жыл бұрын
@@wilfriedklaebe There are weight restrictions that require certain distances between axles. To weight the maximum of 80,000 pounds on 5 axles, there must be 51 feet between the center of the first axle and the last axle in most states. If the only cargo hauled was coils like this, they could use a longer tractor with a shorter trailer or a trailer with more axles. Most trucks haul a wide variety of cargo so they use long trailers. Extra axles add weight and cut down on the payload that can be carried. There are specialized trailers to haul coils but the truck will likely run empty on the return trip and there aren't always coils to haul.

I've wondered why a semi trailer only has one roll of metal, and wondered why they use so many chains to hold them down. Now I know, because they are very heavy! Crazy weight!
@philsmidwestclassiccars150
@philsmidwestclassiccars150 4 жыл бұрын
It can be done, they are not going to cut the weight of the coil down. As far as the customer goes, the more the happier they are. You just got to make sure you are using the proper load securement equipment, that you have good wood dunnage that the coil sits on, that the coil is position properly on the trailer for weight distribution, & that the driver is experienced enough to handle the heavy freight. The trailers today are aluminum. Putting that kind of weight on the trailer causes the trailer to flex & bend. The driver has to learn to drive accordingly.

AU03 probably from Sanjeev Industrial Corporation. Also known as TATA-Steelium, .0168" deep drawing steel. So Mike you are probably correct for making cans. Why is the WLL so low on those snatch blocks? Figure a 75 ton rotator would have beefier blocks
@PepesTowingService

We have a 20ton and a 25ton Crosby snatch block for big flipper. The skookum blocks are a light weight alloy that are proven, they weight like 45lbs. We get lots of jobs where we have to part our lines and remove them, and RARELY will ever have to lift more than 30,000lbs with just one line. This was that once a year exception.

Do the cops or transport authority do an investigation on an accident like this? I know here in Australia our freeways aren’t as big and hectic as yours but our transport authority would do a full investigation before the wreck could be moved. Especially when there is such a massive problem with the structure of the trailer. That coil would be sent for recycling. Nothing salvageable there. You lifted a 19 ton coil with a 15 ton snatch block? Will you be replacing the snatch block? I know they are generally over engineered to what their rated at but does that concern you?

If there is a fatality in the state I live in, Ohio, it seems the removal could be delayed 4 to 12 hours. Otherwise they seem to remove everything as quickly as possible.

if inspections are done there are tram marks on all the hooks and you can measure the hook to see if it has spread or stretched

Was the coil of sheet steel mounted in the middle of the trailer or over the axle? With that much weight in one spot I'm thinking over the axle would be better.

Big Flipper is kind of an inside joke that fits the truck. It's pretty damn big and it flips stuff back upright. Hulk is hulk for obvious reasons

Big Flipper is a 75 ton rotator. Miller Industries offers a 100 ton rotator, "Century M100" (according to them the largest rotator in the world)

Trailer was too old to haul that coil. Let alone be rated to haul that size of a coil.. Guess most business owners can't afford a new rated trailer in Cali for that kind of loads...
