One thing to keep in mind is that when the roads are repaved you lose some space between the road and the over pass or bridge. I would give yourself at least a 3 inch cushion.

Thank you for your ever amusing Sunday posts! Your persistence makes me hopeful of a life after Covid! On August 30 last year I picked up my Escape 19 in BC. I rushed the purchase because I planned to attend the Trailing of the Sheep in Idaho. But real life intervened, and I still haven't been camping with it, apart from my back yard, because of serious back problems. Surgery in December relieved most of the problem, and in February I was happily planning stays at the Black Sheep Gathering, rallies with RVing Women, ET, Rally, etc. In March, of course, came the virus, cancellations, closure of the Canadian border and we (RBS and I) have been home ever since. In May I looked at this white hulk by the chicken coop and wondered about my sanity in "investing" $$$. Then I realized she promises a future that I cannot plan for, but is assuredly coming. So I changed her name from Really Big Sheep to Great White Hope, like the whale. My only regret is paying the WA excise tax in September when I could have put it off indefinitely. 20-20 hindsight. And I regret options I selected and those I did not in my rush. In response to your video, I want to caution you about overhangs at the ticket booths on the WA ferry docks. Signs mark the clearance, but it's easy to screw up. I did so when I owned a 27' Class C. My bad...The dent is still visible at the dock, and damage to the RV was minimal. On a cheerier note, Camilla Saulsbury has written a cookbook: 250 Best Meals in a Mug. You do need a microwave and two sizes of mug, 16 oz and between 12 and 16 oz. Because the portions are enough for two meals for me, I use 2 qt Pyrex cup. The recipes are good and cleanup is minimal! She has a second book on desserts, but 250 Best Meals has 30 desserts, cakes, cookies, pies and puddings. Please keep writing!

My dad and my uncle were on a fishing boat in the 60s or early 70s in the middle of South Dakota when they saw some lights "chasing" their boat. Dad said the lights looked like they were more near the shore, but it was weird how they would turn and/or speed up-slow down according to what the guys did with their boat. Dad wasn't a believer in stuff like this normally and thought there must have been some sort of electrical charge in the air causing this phenomena, but he never figured out what caused it, and I think it spooked him a little. :)

Bridge story. Was driving a big rig on a new route, glued to the company route and my exit was under construction. Next exit was a couple of miles down the road and I had GPS up on my phone. Exited, headed down a two lane and there's a railroad bridge marked 13 0. Stopped a hundred feet or so short and got out to see if I could make the next right turn or maybe plan a reverse. I was inexperienced, it was about 1:00 a.m., and I really didn't know what I was going to do. As I got down to the right turn just before the tracks I was at a different angle and I could see a big 1 that had slipped behind the 13. Woot! 13' 10", I got 13' 6" of trailer!

As for UFO's. On Cape Cod. A UFO hotspot. My son and I were driving down route 6, heading up to Boston. Middle of a Sunday afternoon. We stopped for a quick bite before going over the bridge. I checked the time. The next thing we knew, we were about a half mile from where we ate and it was 3 hours later. Neither one of us has any idea what the heck happened. But we are absolutely sure of the last moment we remember together, getting food, and what time it was. We've scratched our heads over that for a long time. No other memories about it. No nightmares or dreams. I knew a lot of people on the Cape who had similar stories. No idea what happened ... but something did.

We were on BLM near Ajo AZ two years ago. We saw these weird lights that would just hover in one spot. The two lights would be on for a bit then one would go off. That light would reappear a minute later on the opposite side of the other light. The lights were so bright they lit up the side of our motor home. It seemed they were almost over the town 3 or so miles away.

Robin, I started watching you about 2 years ago when I was planning out a bus conversion and researching everything I could find before I bought a bus. Alas, I still have not gotten the bus, but I did purchase a 28 foot, 20 year old fifth wheeler a year ago, parked it on my daughter's property in southern NM and here I live until I find "THAT" bus. My feet have been so itching to travel that I am considering selling my SUV that I have said for years that I wouldn't get rid of, buying a truck, hooking up and hitting the road. My question for you is this: ____________________________________________________ HA! I don't have one! You have made so many well informed video's over the years that if I have a question, I am sure to find it in one of your many video's. And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how you have it all organized by major topics on your playlists in case I ever need to go back and re-watch something because my old brain is having trouble remembering something. So, I have no question, but I do have a request. Stop working so much and show some video of you having fun doing something you like....besides working. LOL! Seriously. Much love to you , safe journeys, and I hope to see you some day out on the road.

Hi Robyn! Yes, we have a "bridge" story. We were traveling along the Washington/Oregon border in our 33' fifth wheel. We were on the Oregon side of the Columbia River. Decided we wanted to spend the night. I looked up private campgrounds and discovered a little one just across the river in Washington. When we approached the bridge, the attendant told us it was a narrow bridge and we'd have to fold our truck's mirrors in. We thought she was kidding, but she wasn't. We started across the bridge thinking we had plenty of room...UNTIL a semi tractor/trailer appeared coming toward us. When we passed, we were literally close enough to the semi, our mirrors would have been ripped off if we hadn't folded them in. It was terrifying. Love you. Love your posts! Carol from Colorado

Back in the 1970s, we had a swimming pool in the back yard. My mom would sit out there in the floating chair at night time and just stargaze, but like you said... More than once she saw objects moving through the skies and just stop or make 90 degree turns, etc., etc. and fly away & disappear like a shot. A nurse I used to work with was at a facility & whilst she & her co-workers were sitting outside taking a break something stopped over them & just sat there, silently, a light shining down on them, then flew away... and NO, it was not a police helicopter, this thing made zero sound!

I could listen to you for hours. I am always sad when the video ends :). Yes I have seen a UFO. This was back in the 70's so way before drones. It was at a WNY lake that was called Rainbow Lake (lake has different name now). There were at least 30 people who saw it at the same time. At first we thought it was a light on a tower in the distance until it began moving towards us with absolutely no sound and then as it moved very close, it suddenly shot up into the air really high and disappeared. Was amazing and very scary at the same time. Love your videos!!!

Our experience with UFO is very similar. It was in the middle 60's. Four of us were spending the weekend at Hilton Head. We built a fire on the beach and it had burned down to coals. We noticed a light near the water traveling laterally. One suggested a boat. Too close. Another suggested a bicycle. As it came nearer, one of us lit a cigarette and the light shot straight up and beamed toward us. And went out. After breathing again, we hightailed it back to the cabin. After we were in bed, there was a large crash. One of the men jumped up, grabbed his shotgun and turned on the lights. A styrofoam cooler had been sitting on a tv tray and it spilled allover the floor. I don't think that was a spook ou UFO, but uneven ice settling. We didn't get much sleep the rest of the night. However, it was a memorable weekend.

Hi, Yes I seen a UFO over Interstate 680 in Danville, Ca. Early 1980's it was hovering over a housing track yes it was that big so big it blocked out the stars It had 7 rotating lights under neath it the lead light was at lest 40 feet accost, with the following 6 getting smaller to the last which was probably only 20 feet across. (only a estimate) in size I was travelling but stopped under a over pass and just watched untill it left and when it did leave it was soundless and so quick it seemed to disappear.

To avoid low clearance bridges, I map out my route on Google maps and use satellite view to look for any bridges or tunnels. Then use street view to click near the entrance and look around the 360 view for any height signs. Another option is that some states' department of transportation websites (AZ for example) have extensive spreadsheets of all of their overpasses and the engineering specs including height clearance.

I did see something in the sky early one morning like 3:00 a.m. it was very large and moving very slowly, like I impossibly slow. It had 4 lights across the front not like you would see on an airplane. It was very dark out and you could hardly make it out against the night sky, as it got closer I stepped into the shadows until it was right overhead it was very quiet, I could hear what sounded like fans. I told my bff and she said she had seen the same thing, only she was driving home late with her kids in the car when this large thing flew over her, I dont know if it was the same object I had seen or on the same day but she described it exactly like what I had seen, creepy. We live in the Sierra mountains and see things frequently. Have fun out there.

Hooray, hardcopies of your books! I have both of those as ebooks and I like the advantages of that format, but when I am studying something or using a book as a reference book it is so much easier to flip through a hardcopy. It is also easier to mark up the margins and tuck notes inside for later. Once they come out I will happily own both ebook and hardcopy versions of your books!
@wendyannh
@wendyannh 4 жыл бұрын
I agree about the relative advantages and disadvantages of both formats. For the most part, I stick to reading I am unlikely to want to take notes on or highlight very much on my Kindle, and also avoid anything with a lot of graphic content because it is just too small. I’ve learned that those kinds of things are much better in hard copy. The big advantage to having an electronic version of a book with a lot of reference links is just being able to click on the links to go to the url, but at least in the Kindle ecosystem, that really only works on the free apps because the built-in so-called “experimental” browser on the actual devices is far too rudimentary. (I don’t know if it’s different for the Fire devices; I only use a Kindle Keyboard and a fairly old Paperwhite.) Fortunately, most urls are at least pretty simple these days, so having to type them manually isn’t nearly the issue it usually was in the early days of the WWW.

About 40 years ago I lived in northern Wyoming and one night I was going home from Billings Montana. I saw a large, bright light moving above the road that just seemed odd. Not the usual things like a plane, security light on a farm, etc. No other traffic on the road and I was alone. Sure scared me at the time. In the next couple days, others said they saw it also but I don't think there was ever any news story about what it was. Of course at the time, most thought it was a UFO.

I have the RV Life app, which gives you routes that avoid low clearance. The only problem with it is it really overestimates trip times so I don't always use it because, on screen at least, it often doubles the trip length (not in real life, as I discovered). On a recent trip, despite my saying "avoid tolls," Goole Maps put me on the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan. When I came out the other end EVERY road had a sign that said "LOW CLEARANCE." I had to pick one, so I did, and soon came up to a bridge with 8'6" clearance (my bus is 10'). Luckily there was a gas station to pull over in, and I switched to RV Life. The route they gave me said it was going to take me 7 hours instead of 4, but I did it anyway, and ended up arriving in 4.5.

I’ve actually seen a UFO and I was absolutely terrified, frozen, tears were streaming down my face, just the fear of the unknown and helplessness was overwhelming. My girlfriend and I were in Phoenix Arizona visiting her Mom in March of 1997. We were heading back from supper and saw the lights. We pulled over and they got so close we could hear and feel a low humming vibration through our whole body. For some reason what went through my mind at that very moment was my babies, my two little sons at home in El Paso... were they safe? I stood in fear frozen in that moment in time.

Was it a black triangle shaped and lights of red, white and or blue? Because outer space crafts do not make any sounds or vibration, however the government's do and those are usually shaped as a triangle and the government blasts harmful zaps to humans especially if you're a target. I've encountered the Grey's and reptilians on MANY occasions, but only the government's once, to which they flew 30 feet above my house in slow motion. Anyways, I am quite knowledgeable on this subject from experience and not books.

Hey Robin I love your videos. I am a lady trucker and I also have a 5th wheel toy hauler that is 13' 2". The best resource is a good old fashioned Atlas..... not the regular people version, but the trucker version.... they are twice as fat and more money, but worth every penny. With rvs as big as ours. these, trucker atlases are a wealth of info wen gps fails or wen no signal for phone to use apps..the front pages are all low clearances(a low clearance is considered anything below 13'6" which is the statutory height under federal guidelines, which,By law, must be marked with signage.[that's not to say that signs don't fall off and always double check visually if you are unsure. After all. It's your rig that will be tore up AND if a DOT [department of transportation officer] happens by and your rig damaged the bridge, YOU ARE LIABLE to fix bridge....]]it also lists roads that are not advisable for certain weights, or lengths of vehicles.... some of those 5th wheels and trucks are 63' or longer and there are some gorgeous roads not advisable for that length because of switchbacks on roads that you will hog up the whole road trying to make the turns)..ty for all your hard work and keep on truckin girl!...btw. if you're truck is diesel...get DEF at truckstops in big rig lanes...way more convenient and truckers love rv-ers, cuz they're not truckers!😁

We looked at large RV's for our full time RV life then went for a 24 footer. And we LOVE IT! In fact, we would like to go smaller in the future, but that's all down to the small country we live in and smaller roads etc. UFO's? Not seen any on the road, but I saw something many years ago.

I haven’t seen any UFO’s but I sure saw a billion stars a few nights ago, at 3 am in the morning, when my batteries died, and the fridge died, and the carbon monoxide alarm went off. 🙃 In an effort to quiet that obnoxious alarm, I went outside to turn off both propane tanks.. I was so annoyed by the whole event until I looked up into the vast and endless skies above Ward CO. The smoke had cleared from all the fires and the stars stretched on forever. It was breathtaking and made me feel so grateful to be there in that moment. After a good long look at the amazing skies, I went back in and found a pair of wire cutters to quiet the alarm. Bliss! Here is my question; How do you care for and manage your batteries? What kind do you prefer? I’ve had 4 rather new ones die well before they should have.

Okay, that is... not the X-Files theme... but it is spooky! Glad to enjoy another View Q. As for RV size and convenience, one-piece rigs are good going down the road (Class A, small Class B or C, pickup with slide-in camper), and two-piece rigs are better once you are parked and can unhitch and enjoy the surrounding region. This is especially true with multiple people in the rig. Storage in a tiny RV? You lose things in an RV because in a house or apt. your toothbrush always goes in the bathroom and the can opener always goes in the kitchen. In an RV things are scattered in the nearest available space that is large enough to accommodate them. Then you tear everything apart trying to track the items down. No sense of logical organization. Same problem in finding things in a backpack -- how on earth can a compass get lost? Have a glorious autumn!

This was many years ago a huge group of family and friends went camping on an island in tents for a few days. We were on Lake of the Woods in Morson, Ontario. We had a couple of our Aunts with us who were older ladies that were alot of fun. As we were sitting out one night on the beach having a huge bonfire and staring up at the stars, one of the Aunts said.... oh my! Look a flying foreskin!! Needless to say we all died laughing!! I think she may have had a bit to much Rye!! Cheers!!

I was at the beach with my friend Lisa, it was late August in 2005. We were watching the sky from the shore and we noticed a bright green light zipping around in the sky. Then she pointed out there was another, large, solid light pulsing in the water in the middle of the bay. We watched for a few minutes before it really started creeping us out. I remember stuttering, "Do... you m-maybe wanna go... Back?" and she just quietly nodded for a moment before saying, "Yeahhhhh..." very slow and nervous.

I was camping in the Ouachita Mountains near the OK/AK line with a large group. This area is DARK and has great nighttime stargazing. We were on a hill with a long-range view in two directions. We saw a group of several UFOs making maneuvers that were impossible for known aircraft and at speeds that were impossible ... 90-degree turns, sudden straight-up or straight-down moves while moving, dead stops, etc. They had no blinking lights. This was years before drones were a thing. So, we'd gather around at night in our camp chairs, away from our cabin lights and campfires, to watch them. I remember one night, a guy came out of one of the cabins and asked what we were doing. "Watching the UFOs," we said casually. He looked at us like we were nuts. Then after watching them for a few minutes, he went to get his own camp chair to join us.

I started watching you because of a reference in your intro about being an artist. I wanted to find out how you manage that. I'd love to have an art studio on wheels. I've found that you have great info about a lot of things, but you don't seem to talk about that. Today I see those paintbrushes in the background and that reminds me that I'd love to hear you talk about doing art on the road. What's your medium? How do you deal with the space limitations? Do you ever show your work? Tell me more.

Yes! I'd love this. How do you store supplies and finished works? Do you sell/ship and if so, how does that work on the road? I'm thinking digital downloads is the most convenient way to go. Please share your thoughts.

P C I also started watching because she mentioned she likes to paint in watercolor and asked the same questions about her art. Watercolor is probably the easiest medium to take on the road. I did many times using the table in the motorhome or a folding table and chair outside and the supplies do not take up a lot of room.

It’s a very good question, and I have an answer. I am an electro mechanical technician by trade and have been for approximately 40 years until I retired. RVs/motorhomes are not like anything I had worked on professionally. It’s not that they’re so difficult - they are just different! I would recommend starting with what you know, and expand on that. For example, if you’ve had experience unclogging a household sink, but now have an RV sink that’s clogged, and it just looks different (because it is), just go to KZbin. Something mechanical goes wrong with your rig: just go to KZbin. I don’t want to give you the impression that everybody on KZbin knows what they’re talking about, but everybody does have a “ perspective” on how to remedy the situation. Soon you will have your perspective too. Good luck, and remember we’re all amateurs in this life but some of us have more experience.

Enjoy your videos and so impressed by your writing. You inspire me to consider travel. Wanted to direct your attention to the word height. As a former teacher I noticed that many are confused about how to use the words height and heighth. Words like length, and width lead us to over generalize and use the word, heighth, which is not formerly recognized as a word. Heighth is considered a colloquial variant used in speech in some parts of the country. That is probably where you learned it.

It's not the overpasses, but the trees, both overhead and on the sides that worry me, especially in in the south and east. Less than a month after going FT I had a low hanging tree limb in a Florida subdivision clean my WiFi antenna off the top of my ladder. I have 11' 7" clearance to the top of my AC shroud (relatively low compared to many), but my antenna was sticking up about 5 inches above this. That was enough to break it off. Remember that the weight of rain causes wet tree limbs to hang lower. I had no problem going in, as it hadn't rained in a while, but going out after a rain was a different story. The last time I was traveling in Texas there was some road construction forcing me to onto the right shoulder of the road, where some overgrown bushes scraped the right side of my motorhome, which is where my solar panels are. Fortunately, nothing was damaged; still it gave me a scare.
