Those ffifth wheel locks can be picked or cut off if they want your stuff. Ask any locksmith. He will tell you that locks only keep out honest people. I had left my rig to buy dinner and came back to find the padlock shank was was almost broken but had been bent. If I had been gone for a longer time? They probably would have defeated the Master lock on my door.

Robin, I’m 59, married 40 years, 60 lbs overweight, and mechanically and technically challenged. I’m also a solo RVer!! Love it!! Last year I had a fifth wheel and truck, this year I’ve downsized to a 25’ class c. I have seasonal sites in AZ and northern MN which I use as basecamps for shorter trips out and about. Husband joins me for some trips. Works for me! Thanks for your helpful videos. ❤️

Missed an important point, you do not level every day, do not look for a dump or water every day, do not look for a camp spot every day. Black tank lasts at least 10 days , grey 6 or 7 , . So lots of time to enjoy life.

One of the best things about RV living is that you can change the way you camp based on what you need. I have gone from traveling every week through the eastern provinces of Canada for three months to staying in the same private campground for three months so I could visit family and work. Sometimes I hike a lot, other times I sit in a chair at the beach and spend a day running around Disney World acting like a 12-year-old. My advice to anyone thinking about this life is this: "Don't let anyone else's way of RVing make you think the way you camp is wrong." Thanks, Robin for sharing your life with us. You have modeled this flexibility in the variety of rigs you've had and the different places you've stayed in. I look forward to hearing more of your stories.

However, having Jeffery from RV Diagnostics on Facebook at my disposal 24/7 I've changed my dump tank valves, found blown brakes, learned soooooo many things and fixed them on my own with Jeffrey's help. A lot of good advice. Well done. For those afraid to go solo, I began my own journey at the age of 68 with no previous experience. It's been over a year and yes, there have been some bumps in the road but nothing I haven't been able to manage. It's been easy to meet like minded and helpful, supportive folks along the way. I am so looking forward to the suspense novel! There is a certified RV Repair shop in our small town, and they have been wonderful teaching me how to take care of things myself once we get out on the road. Doesn't hurt to ask to tag along. KZbin videos are great as long as you trust the channel (like yours!!!) I'm a grandmother who used to be afraid of heights. I did my own roof solar installation this summer and had the guys at the shop hook up my MPPT controller. Today I'm starting the security video install. Looking forward to your video on that too! Thank you for answering my question! I've bought your books and am preparing as much as one can. My daughter knows that I'll be going out on the road when she graduates high school in a year and a half and heads off to college. She's super supportive and I'm very excited! But I do have to admit that, after seeing all the videos of the many challenges and things to remember and do, I was starting to feel cautious and a little nervous about the choice I've made! To be frank, I'd started to feel overwhelmed and insecure! The fact that you talked about how it *can* be done and we'll feel accomplished, included encouragement, AND mentioned the trade-off between the work involved vs the tough job of simply surviving another meeting really spoke to me. Thank you for the punch in the arm! Stay safe!

I started with a travel trailer, went to a 40’ Motorhome, then to a 42 foot 5th wheel and now back to a small travel trailer. I love camping so much and I’ve learned to fix almost everything myself. It’s very empowering and I can’t wait to retire and go full time!! I will be driving an HDT, which I just bought, pulling a Vanleigh Beacon 5th wheel. I absolutely LUV you! LUV YOU!! You are so inspirational! Level headed! Informative as all heck! . . . . and I could go on, . . . . . . At 58 (59 this January), I have absolutely no qualms about starting my new life in my new 'moveable' home. I am not worried about being on my own, diving in & fixing or repairing (I'm extremely handly) without having all of the tools that I have been used to, I don't even have any fears about finances. And my budget is limited - when all is said and done, I probably have enough to keep me going for 3 years! I'm extremely lucky so far. The RV that I am desperately interested in purchasing is in the eastern provinces of Canada. With all of my lifelong travels, I have never been east of Montreal. So I have a wide-open new-world to experienced while I'm getting settled. I say lucky, because the owners of my 'New-To-Me-But Used' home, seem to understand my situation & are holding it for me! If that isn't a sign, then I don't know what is! My entire delays are derived around ending a ridiculously long (6 years this January) common-law settlement that left me penniless! The only thing holding me back is not knowing how to get all of those ducks in a row to get out there. It seems I run into brick-wall after brick-wall! But with all of your insight & content that you have loaded into all of your videos, I have soooooo many options to finance myself to make my monies last longer than 3 years. Sooooo many ways that I did not think of, to keep myself safe! And basically the bottom line there is "Common-Sense"!! I guess we can add in our 'Gut-Feelings' as well. But you have some amazing tips to go further than those 2 'Safe-Modes'. I can hardly wait to have my separation settled so I can get my hands on your books!! Bravo!! For all that you have accomplished! Seriously! I don't think you realize how many you actually do inspire! But, a HUUUUGE typed HUG as a thank you for inspiring me!

Good video. Ladies should start by tent camping. No leveling no water tanks no breakdowns etc. In tent camping you can get your feet wet without a huge investment. You still have all of the planning for food and laundry. Tent set up, camp fire, dishes, scouting for locations, hiking, darkness, animals, bugs etc. Master that step first, then the rest will be easy. . .

A couple of things. The LTVA winter season is for 7 months (September 15- April 15) so even a better deal!! As for vandalism/theft- a friend of mine had 2-200w solar panels stolen from outside his Class A several weeks ago near Santa Fe. He usually has them hooked to an alarm system but had that off that night. Sad but a lesson learned. He has a good philosophy-if the people that took them really needed them to survive, so be it. If not-karma has a way of taking care of things. Thanks for the great vids and helpful info!! And a recommendation from one of your Amazon lists-I *love* the USB charged electric lighter. That I keep hanging right by my stove and use daily. Great tool to have!!

I’m leaving a state job here in NY. I’ve been told I’m crazy by a few people, but i can just feel that this is the right path!! Most people look at me with wonder when i tell them what I’m doing. I do have to say, 90% of the people i tell, they just say, “I’m so jealous, I wish i could do it!” There’s a few who have scolded me, but i gotta say, you couldn’t pay be enough to live their lives! Keep up the Fantastic work! And maybe I’ll see you out on the road!!

Stranded by a stuck out slide was my latest dilemma 100 mi. from town. Found out from mobile rv repairman it was a broken gear, something unfixable by me. Repairman put screws in to catch the rotating shaft. But how to get the slide in all the way, as the motor was shorted out and the crank only got it in just so far on the broken side? I suggested using my old leveling board against the wall at the floor seam level and he put the other board stuck in my truck bumper like a spear, just like the compressed air tank in the shark's mouth in Jaws. Then I used my truck to push the spear against the flat against the slideout board that two people held in place to press the slide in. It worked. Got the stuck slide in and me unstranded. Hope this helps anyone with a similar situation.
@jannezack
@jannezack 4 жыл бұрын
Though slides give you so much more room, I really don’t want one. I design houses (now for my job) and I try not to spec out anything mechanical on a home such as powered attic vents. The non-mechanical vents work well and don’t break down. Anything powered will eventually die. This includes auto leveling motors, slides and all sorts of switches inside your RV that open dump valves and other things. You pay more for these “conveniences” but when they break, it is NEVER convenient! Keep this in mind before you spend all your money!

Just thought I'd give some feedback on courses. Like you, I started out by going FT and knowing nothing about RVs. As I'm very much a DIY kinda gal though, I wanted to learn as much as I could. I chose the one week, on-site Basic RV Maintenance course offered through National RV Training Academy in Athens, TX. The course is taught by Terry Cooper, who's known as the RV Professor (great guy!), and it covers pretty much everything from tip to tail regarding RVs. I also opted to take the 2nd week, which was to become a certified RV Inspector. Following those I took the tech courses to become a certified RV Technician. I truly cannot say enough about everyone at NRVTA and NRVIA.

If you have a chance to see “Little House on the Road”, which has morphed into Little House Off-Grid, they started off living in a pop-up camper. After a few months, they were staying in a state forest in Florida. They had gone to the ranger station to inquire about being campsite hosts, and while they were gone, an unstable local (another camper) decided to burn their camper, after stealing their food. They were left with a pile of smoking refuse to clean from the forest, and their tow vehicle (a truck with an extended cab), which they were in when they went to the rangers’.

Thank you so much , great video & love your hair. I am a married solo traveler & I too am very mechanically challenged. I agree fully about the confidence that comes when you fix something yourself or should I say with the help of KZbin. I replace a rear turn signal on my Chevy Express in a rest area on a very windy day. I might add it was no small feat. You have to remove half the backend of the van lol. I found it funny that the mechanically inclined guy doing the video warned it's hard & you'll probably break this one clip which I did but it still went together just fine. I have accomplished a lot in this life but dont know if I've ever been prouder as I was that day as I flicked on that turn signal to get back on the Interstate. I advise anyone thinking about the Life, watch this ladies great videos & go for it. :)

Great video Robin.... with my rig I read and reread my manuals. I studied what they were telling me and I watch lots of KZbin videos. There is someone who has done it, been there, teaches you. I am now also fixing big things on my car as well. Plus you will know what a mechanic is talking about if you can’t do it yourself which is so important because you will know if you can trust them or run!!! Also research cost of parts and learn to have things in your tool box to fix simple things like fuses, bulbs (led) etc. Also don’t cheap out on your tires, brakes and bearings and learn your weight distribution facts and figures! I would actually loves to teach women this stuff because as you said it is so rewarding to accomplish this stuff on your own!!!

I know what you mean. Three years ago I couldn't decide what I wanted. There were so many options. Finally, I just had to start. The thing that helped me was really knowing "why" I wanted to live this lifestyle. Knowing this has helped me to stay flexible and to adapt when things to wrong, and yes things will go wrong. It took me a year to downsize my home, buy my RV, and start living full time in my motorhome. I am still learning and making mistakes, but I love that I made the decision. Be kind and gentle with yourself and don't expect things to be perfect. The mistakes are part of the process and most, if not all, are able to be worked out with the help of family, friends, and amazing fellow RVers. I hope you are able to start soon.

As for being vandalized, we had a break in with our Class C about 10 years back at a Wal Mart parking lot in Las Vegas. Had someone cut/rip/bend the off-side screen and frame, break a plastic cover over a hookup to use it as a stair-step, and climbed in through the window to steal a couple laptops while we were inside shopping. We're now living in a Class A and have invested in window locks AND a guard dog. Haven't had an issue since, and have a much better peace of mind too.

Hey Robin. Loved the View Q. You ask about obstacles when you're driving and I notice that some construction signs hang out very close to the side of your rig and so I always try to look out for them. Also I did see a tree lamb that looked kind of low and the way it was bent it did hit my air conditioner. But luckily it was a thin one! I went from a class C to a class B Van and it is a foot shorter and I love it! Hope to see you adding Quartzsite this Winter.💞

Great job on a concise straight to the point video! Will be starting on my adventure soon. Found a well preserved popup slide in for my old GMC. Bought some nice portable solar for power. Will be sleeping in it for the first time a few days after I arrive in Florida. I have two young adult children there to help if I need it. My son thinks the camper may be to hot for me but I'll head to the north GA. mountains to cool off if I have to!

There are training schools that will teach you how to tow your rig. They will teach you how to back it and pull it and turn it and all of that kind of stuff.

There is one resource for repairs that I have seen some pretty positive reviews of... Mobile RV Repair. You touched on it in one of your videos that I highly recommend watching. We are not on the road yet but when we do take the plunge we will definitely be mapping out their locations along what ever route we are travelling. I can make a few types of repairs but when it comes to things like converters, inverters and a whole list of other things I have never dealt with I would prefer to leave that up to the experts and as you have previously pointed out, going to a dealer can be very expensive and time consuming. It seems these mobile repair folks are pretty knowledgeable and reasonably priced. Maybe having this alternative in their back pocket when an issue comes up can give someone peace of mind knowing that help could be just a phone call away where ever they might be. Maybe someday you could do a video on just mobile RV repairs? No one could ever come close to explaining the pros and cons like you! Me and my wife love your site!

I have a quick question, but first a little back story. My partner and I have been living FT in our RV since February. About three weeks ago had a kitten fall into our lives. Her name is Tipsy jazzy star, she’s amazing and we couldn’t leave her where she was. I’ve been trying to just go with the flow and work with the spaces we have. Currently we have a larger Tupperware container as her litter box that she stayed in our shower for almost the first week when we were waiting on her cage. We’ve had to keep a litter box over our shower drain, because she has kept peeing over it once we got her in a cage. She also has a corner box in her kitty condo. I’m exhausted with all the litter, she likes to fling it around the house and play in the one that’s in the shower. I have the shower lined in plastic but it’s rather annoying to clean out every morning before I go to work. My questions are What kind of litter do you use? And what type of litter box do you have???
