In Scotland you would not be allowed to fish there. The fishing would start 100 feet from the waterfall.

In some og the rivers, that would definitely be a good idea here in Norway as well - like in Gaula and Nidelva, where they catch a lot of really big salmon. In this particular river (Storelva) the fishing starts a mere 15 feet from the waterfall and only fly fishing is allowed.

Congratulations on catching such a stunning fish, and for being such a skillful fisherman! I love to catch and eat wild fish (I would rather not eat a farmed one). When I catch a very big fish, I usually eat it; I have eaten lots of salmon almost as big as this one. When fish of many (not all) species reach a certain size, they are so old that they are not going to live very much longer anyway. This is especially true of a large salmon running up the river from the sea; they are there to spawn and will then die straight away. I never have qualms about killing a fish, or any other game. If there are not many of them, I would not fish or hunt them. And a lot of released fish do end up dying shortly after anyway, due to being handled. In general, even though I love to fish, if I am not going to eat them, I will leave them alone. That has always been my policy; although I do sometimes release fish for various reasons.
@BushCampingTools2 жыл бұрын
That's my policy too. Unless I'm going to eat it I don't fish or hunt. I do both but only to eat and or tan skins and eat. Personally, I don't like catch and release because in reality many fish do die due to poor handling and or infections from hook wounds/breaks in scale covering and or excess removal of slime.
@richardjones20062 жыл бұрын
A gravid female fish, stuffed with thousands of eggs headed up river to spawn. In my experience big salmon don't taste near so fine as a grilse, and having eaten of a couple of big ones years ago I have never killed one. Hell of a fish to land, just a shame you didn't let her go. You don't look hungry.
@truthteller85672 жыл бұрын

@truthteller85672 жыл бұрын
@@BushCampingTools that's not true. Research confirms that 90% of catch and release salmon return on their way to spawn. If you don't release them they have no chance at all. If most fish die after being released then how do coarse fisheries keep in business? Once the salmon are gone they are gone forever.
@BushCampingTools2 жыл бұрын
@@truthteller8567 Once a Salmon has spawned it dies, they do not return anywhere, (ok most not all but only about 10% will come back if they survive-although I am yet to find an independent scientific (university based study) reference to that "10%" figure) it is a one way trip but if one catches them on their way to spawning then they (dependent upon where and how far they are from spawning grounds) may never get there. I'd be interested (I'm a biologist) for some references about the catch and release for salmon. I don't doubt about fishing in enclosed systems, a completely different story, since the fish are not navigating anywhere via chemical queues etc. to spawning grounds A completely different environment.

@gunzowillis545 Жыл бұрын
@@ewilmann not allowed? I’ve taken my share over the years. With everything that goes on out at sea and being a big multi season salmon. I would have slipped it back regardless. We have rivers that were the same as this, we regularly had 20+ pounders. But you continue to take them and there are fewer to pair up when spawning. You cannot recreate big fish genetics for specific rivers

Firstly beautiful fish. To those oh release the fish only anglers, next time you tie or buy a salmon fly ask what is it tied from, slaughtered birds and/or killed animals and then say save the fish, gets on my tits. I catch and release only cause were i live stocks are low. If numbers rise il make my decision then. Netters, trawlers etc etc were i live have our rivers destroyed not the angler. All rivers world wide have different stocks of salmon coming in from the sea. Well done from me.

ever consider it a warning and to take heed from others mistakes? a fish that big is nowhere near as good for the table as a 5lbr and secondly releasing a fish that big will have a greater benefit to future stock than a smaller fish laying less eggs

who was to see you put that fish back? it looked like an atlantic salmon and they arent invasive to norway unless im mistaken, stop fishing in the 1970s and get with the programme, smaller 1s for the table and the big girls go back, SICKENING
@ewilmann2 жыл бұрын
I filmed and posted this video. The Atlantic salmon is indeed native in Norwegian rivers and this particular river (Stordalselva) is very healthy. Why they dont allow c/r is frustrating for us fly fishers too, since many wants to release - particularly the big ones as their meat isnt that good. Also, the quota is two per day so we risk having to end fishing after an hour in the river if we are «lucky» and catch them early. As for your claim «who was to see you», I think the video speaks for it self: many people present. To be sure, we all want healthy rivers.

@@ewilmann o dear i dropped the fish, there was the whole problem sorted accidents happen, why dont all you anglers start something then and take it too your govermental body thats relevant and force the change in the river
@ewilmann2 жыл бұрын
@@whitetroutchannel first of all, as I am sure you can see, there are many people present. Secondly, the river is one of few that is very healthy so there is really no disastet killing it. We all want to protect the salmon, but the angler never was the problem. The fishfarms are the villains here, producing clouds of lice killing the young salmon leaving the fjords, and letting farm breed salmon escape into the rivers.
@whitetroutchannel2 жыл бұрын
@@ewilmann mate i see all to well the effects of lice, my sea-trout in northern ireland are riddled with them, they drop of in the fresh anyway, your argument for knockin fish like that on the head makes zero sense, just all keep doin what your doing, your river will be empty soon enough
