It's really reassuring as a brand brand new skater to see that even things like this challenge your mental state and I loved seeing you work through and it giving it a go trusting the body position and then nailed it! I'm hoping to build confidence :) I'm starting at your beginner series. Today was the first day I put a skate on :D one shoe one skate but I got it on and it fits well :D I'm just a centimeter or two from a 10 so the pair I got are 10s and I feel stable when standing but I got a long way to go before I'm anywhere near trying stairs lol if I can get backwards skating in 4 months or 6 months I'll be super stoked and proud :D I'm aiming to feel comfortable enough in about half a year to try backwards though

Awesome video as always, thank you for doing this guys. One question though - Shaun if you were to explain what caused that fall around 10:22? Was it the speed from the first set of stairs propelling you into more of a "jump" onto the second part instead of sliding down the first few stairs of the second set? Like not enough wheels/stairs contact there? Or something else? I'm asking cause I'm prepping myself for bigger sets of stairs and that's exactly what I'm afraid of, I don't weight much and I often get "launched" into the air like that. Lower position doesn't seem to help and there isn't really a way to regulate your speed during the whole thing.
@bernsahr4 жыл бұрын
If you are getting launched into the air getting low at the same time. It is not the "being low" which will help you, but the "becoming low" (countermovement to a jump)

I talk about going forward in part one but I actually do not recommend going forward on 8 or more stairs. It is really difficult and hard on the knees.
@bonerjamz19925 жыл бұрын
@@FlowSkate Yet in the thumbnail for this vid, you are going down that first set forwards. Some people just do not like the idea of doing extreme things backwards. I for one am perfectly comfortable riding backwards but thats all. Riding. I cant even for some reason make myself do a backflip into a foam pit. Backwards stair rides may be the easier option but there are going to be others than just myself who will want to primarily go forwards down stairs. You would be doing a disservice to your viewers not to at least throw out a few tips for the people who are going to learn forwards regardless of which is easier.

I broke my arm really badly trying to learn stair rides in back in Feb. I was out for a flow on the tall boys and came across a set I've been eyeing up for a while.. a 4 stair with a decent length and low rising steps. I just went balls out on the first attempt and skated fast, turned fakie and nailed it first try. For some reason I felt like I wanted to try it again more slowly to really feel myself ride the stairs (?) The next time getting caught up, flying back and snapping both of the main bones in my arm at the wrist. In hindsight, attempting my first stair rides whilst out on my 3x125s was a bad choice, even though it is definitely possible in them. I am guessing the most optimal set up for learning stair ride technique would be more like 80-100mm (x 4)? Though I guess I could of got injured in any set up.. Either way I am terrified of trying stair bashes again any time soon!
@rollforever855 жыл бұрын
I also remember thinking I should put my wrist guards on first, then realising I left them at home and tried it anyway. God damn it. Haha.
@FlowSkate5 жыл бұрын
Damn. Sorry to hear this. I think something closer to 80 is optimal for learning stair rides. But I am sure it was just a freak accident. Speedy recovery my friend.

Is it safer/easier to do more stairs backwards or something? You mainly did the first set forwards but the more intense stairs you did backwards exclusively
@ItsRaitisLV Жыл бұрын
Knees go through much more impact when doing stairs forwards, because the weight is placed more on heels. Heels are very bad shock absorbers, toes are designed to absorb shock.

I did it with flatbase aggressive skates, forwards is hard, backwards is okay. But Antirocker or freestyle skates you need to balance a full toe pivot the whole time, so good luck ;-)

Do you think it is possible to do on quad skates? Sb commented on doing it on aggresive skates with a antirocker setup and that it didn't go well, I guess doing it on quad skates could be even harder, as quads' wheel setup is closest to the freestyle frame in agressive skates if I were to compare quads to inlines. I'm wondering if it is at all possible, I've never seen anyone ride stairs in quad skates. Anyways great video!
@bernsahr4 жыл бұрын
If you just riding on your toes it should be possible. Theoretically. Even 4-wheel agressive is hard cause of the grind block, antirocker and quad is the next level...
