If most of these fish are catch & release, you have a growing population of experienced fish that have learned to turn off the feed when they hear boats in the vicinity. I would say trolling behind a lone canoe/kayak with an eel pattern, with plenty of movement, would get some good results. I love it when sea bass fishing here in Ireland, but I would love to fish for stripers over there.

Always informational with the under water views John. Thanks for sharing. I'm guessing with all the boats and fish sounder noise, the fish just would not bite like you would want to. Especially seeing them stuck to the bottom like that.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 жыл бұрын
That's a 3- to 3.5-mph current there, as measured by our drift speed. They really need to stay close to the bottom and use the structure to break the current for them, else they'd expend too much energy.

Good point John. Same effect I use to have at bridges in the Delaware river for stripers. Makes sense why they seem to hunker down in one spot(pilings or rocks) in the Delaware. Thanks again for the tips.

Another great video John and nice fish! Could you provide some advice on how you avoid tangles between the main line and leader? Every time I tie braid direct to the 3-way swivel I have several drifts where the leader is wrapped around the main line after reeling up. I usually have to resort to tying a section of mono ahead of the swivel which is a pain.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe your 3-ways aren't big enough? The other possibility is that the drift isn't such that your offering stands out straight from the 3-way.

Great to see the underwater footage! Always frustrating to see you are on the fish but they are not feeding. Any theories on what the cause of the lockjaw was and what would need to change to turn them on? Thanks!
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 жыл бұрын
These big fish eat big stuff here, like porgies, seabass, small fluke... They don't need to feed all of the time, and probably feed a very small portion of the day. Having 50+ boats running over them probably doesn't help either.

I'm having trouble finding information online so I figured the next best place to ask a fishing equipment gear question might be here lol. Recently bought a 10ft med-fast action st croix mojo surf pole. Trying to match it with a penn slammer 3. I'm trying to decide on what size though! I was thinking 5500. Any suggestions? The guy at field & stream in Melville NY told me he wouldn't go smaller then a 8500 but that sounds way too big. I was thinking the right answer would be between 4500-6500 for sure lol. Ive been fishing my whole life but this is the first time I'm trying to buy a decent set up for myself. So any opinions would be appreciated!
@JohnSkinnerFishing

I always thought releasing the larger stripers is a better guarantee for more stripers in the future, since they are the breeders. They have far less natural enemies as well just by having a size advantage. Hearing how much noise there is, there should be some kind of a mandatory distance among the boaters. We're disturbing the fish and they are annoyed with all the motor boats.

Great video. I have a couple of eel lures that I never caught a striper on but I'll try your tecnique and I like the way you release your fish. I liked and subscribed. I was using a whole live mackerel this one day when I was after a 40 plus inch striper but I hooked a great white shark instead while fishing fom my kayak. Part of my video was recently used on the Discovery Channel episode called The Great White North. Toss me a subscription if you like, I only need a couple more to get 1000 :) Cheers

That Maryland rule is very specific to place and time. "To use eels as bait while fishing for striped bass with hook and line from Dec. 16-May 15, inclusive, in the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries." Looks like they're protecting the spawning run of stripers.
