Love it! We did a fly-in to Smoothwater, then hiked Ishpatina Ridge (I climbed the tower), then tripped down the Sturgeon River, back to Temagami about 20+ years ago. There was a couple living on the beach site on Smoothwater, so we camped on the Island. We always went in September, no bugs and tons of Blueberries. Thanks, it was great to see it again!

That’s pretty cool! We did check out the island because it looked like it could be a site but isn’t marked. And yeah, maybe go when it’s not bug season next time 🤣 Might be more enjoyable! Thanks for watching!

Matt - two thumbs up. I did this trip in 2016 with my friend using Jeffs/Ottertooth, except we paddled the entire Lady Evelyn river, it took a while but was quite scenic. The highlight of the trip had to be capturing a photo of a lynx on Jack Lake, he was at the shore drinking and we paddled right past him. Bolted after 1 good snap. I thought the worst portage was the swampy one to Bluesucker, but my friend really did not like the rocks on the way up to Sunnywater.
@MattHaughn2 жыл бұрын
Wow a lynx! Would love to check that off the wildlife bucket list. Temagami sure has no shortage of challenging portages. The effort is well worth it though 😁

Very nicely done, Matt and Jessica. More than 30 years since Louise and I made a similar trip. We did the hike to the fire tower as well, but I don't remember it being as wooded at the top as in your video. Got caught in a snow flurry on the way to our next campsite that day. I also distinctly remember the rocky portages you show in your preview for Part 2, which I have ever since associated with our time in Temagami. Looking forward to the next video. Much as I've enjoyed your travels with the Markus and the guys, sharing your trip with a woman as capable as Jessica adds a much appreciated new dimension.

Thanks Mark! I’m sure everything is starting to grow back in up at the fire tower. Still a beautiful view. You’re right about the rocks! Temagami is a rocky place. Jessica is a trooper! She has more energy than most!

Most of the forestry fire towers in the US and Canada were built by the same companies that built amusement park rides, particularly ferriss wheels. Today, in the US, these towers sometimes come up for sale, provided you dismantle and move them on your dime.

That's a really cool fact! I'll have to mention that the next time I see a fire tower

I’m also from our nation’s capital. My WCPP tripping partner (76 yo father) is from BC so we fly to the Peg, meet there and then drive to Red Lake. If I were doing the entire drive it’d still be worth it. It’s incredible up there, think Algonquin with no people, no bugs, ridiculous fishing and 150m portages. We are considering a third trip in 2021.

That’s pretty enticing! We will look into it further. Maybe go in the next couple years!

Just enjoyed all 4 videos with the family - very entertaining! Can you tell me how you made that map set-up? Looks like lamination, but way better. Would love to do the same for my next trip. Thanks 🙂.
@MattHaughn3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul! We used those lamination sheets that don’t require heat. It failed in the first hour of the trip making the map wet and so we duct taped all the way around and put big pieces on the corners to make holes so we could clip it to something. We are now looking into a map case. Costs the same as a pack of 5 lamination sheets.

Nice video and great scenery. I stayed on that site in woods. Loved the tent area in the middle. Curious why you aren’t wearing your big shirt and headnet while your portaging ?
@MattHaughn4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We figured you stayed there based on the big rock and view of the ridge in your video. I don’t wear bug protection (apart from sometimes bug spray) on portages for three reasons. I find the bugs aren’t too bad when both hands are available to swat them away. I can’t see that well through the bug shirt and my glasses fog up making it impossible to see. Lastly, Jessica is a bug magnet so they all go to her and that’s why she gets the small bug head net and I never have it. More or less to keep her sane as they swarm her. I always feel bad! After a few days, I get use to them and it’s not that bad.
@CamperChristina4 жыл бұрын
Matt Haughn Lol. The trick is to wear a baseball hat with a separate bug net over top and it should be black . That will keep your glasses and sunglasses from fogging up and it will make you feel less suffocated inside. You can also see much better through the black mesh . I don’t have a OG bug shirt I have a mesh one from Canadian tire. It’s awesome it breathes and still keeps me protected. I just wear it over my tank top and I can stay cool. Then add the headnet whenever needed. I think the bugs were bothering you cause you mentioned it a lot. lol. The camera doesn’t lie. Hahaha. The bugs aren’t that bad in Temagami. Bwahahahaha. 🤣 cheers my friend (just messing with you)
@MattHaughn4 жыл бұрын
I will have to look into your suggestions. Sometimes they make me go crazy but it takes a lot! I only mentioned them because Jessica was fuming at how bad they were at the end of every portage! Getting home and seeing the footage of all the bugs on my hat that I didn’t know were there was gross 🤢 We will be back though! Take our revenge on the little critters!
@CamperChristina4 жыл бұрын
Matt Haughn Lol That is because she was carrying the canoe. There is no wind inside and you get attacked to death inside of it when portaging. Lol. 🤣🤣🤣
@MattHaughn4 жыл бұрын
True! Only one hand to swat them away too. Bug trap! 🦟

Thanks for sharing. My daughter and I enjoy Mark and the Park along with your new video of Temagami we look forward to you uploading the rest of the parts. Were did you get your copy of Jeff's Map of Temagami? It's no longer online and I won't order from the site as I know the history of Jeff moving over to unlostify. Would love to get my hands on a copy. If you enjoy Algonquin and Temagami you would enjoy the French River along with Killarney area.

@@MattHaughn thanks for the link its appreciated. Temagami is going to be our next adventure in a year or two. The map will be put to good use. We frequent the French River and Algonquin along with many other places trying to get off the grid. We are actually heading to the French on Monday. You might want to check out the Backcountry Canoe Symposium in April and Winter Camping Symposium in November in Waterloo Region. You can meet a lot of like minded people and its a great place for trippers to gather. Sadly this year due to Cvoid it is canceled. Thanks again and happy paddling.

Hey Matt, love that you're doing these trip videos. Your filming is great! Do you need a permit for camping in Temagami same as in Algonquin? I hope to get there whenever the border reopens. (Probably next year..) stay well my friend. -Mark
@MattHaughn4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! You do need a permit in some areas. We were in what is call the Temagami cluster where you book the park you will be in and can stay on any site on any night. But having said that, most of Temagami is crown land camping. So if you plan right, the trip can be free.
