Thanks for showing this footage. I hike/forage behind Temagami (far down Red Squirrel Road) and it breaks my heart to see how the government/forestry workers don't give an eff about the pristine forest. I'm an avid believer in being a good steward of the forest and making sure to pick up as much/all of the trash I can when I'm back there. I've been hiking back there for over 15 years now, and it's getting worse every year. I'm in my early 40s, and my folks used to take us (the whole family) to swim on the shores of Ferguson Bay (the Sandy Inlet) back in the mid 80's. Great video, guys

Trip good but challenging, fishing not so good. Found a way around the Raja to Muskrat and the high part of Raja to Molle portage on the way back out. Just follow the Muskrat creek down stream around the hill to where that pile of logs was you showed when you came in on your vlog. High water route only, easy beaver dam slide overs saved my back. Paddled all the way to the end of Boot and walked the portage to the edge of the park. Worth it, nice scenery.

Matt - I've been following your YT channel for a while and never saw your "Mark in the Park Season 2" until last week. Gotta say, Awesome job at putting that together, and looking forward to more of these. As a longtime paddler, I know how hard it can be with just the gear you go in with, and couldn't imagine hauling all that Vid gear around. BTW - my son and I are doing that Cedar Loop in mid-May :) If you get a chance, head to Wabakimi, you'll not regret paddling there. Bruce from Wab Outfitters does a great job. I'd love to see you do an interview with him and Margret at the lodge :) he's got some great stories to tell. Take care and maybe we'll cross paths one of these days.

@MattHaughn9 ай бұрын
The camera person was me! Shooting and being in the series at the same time can be tricky… there often wasn’t a lot of opportunity for it. As this was shot for cable TV, it also would have taken away from the storyline and the “illusion” that Mark and Iain were out there by themselves. Glad to hear you’ve enjoyed the series!

What week of the year would this have been? I normally only go in September, but one year I had to go the week before Labor Day. I got eaten alive on the Dickson Bonfield portage. To make matters a thousand times worse, I double carried, and I took the same route in AND out!

@moosewhizzerdave206610 ай бұрын
I tried this a few years ago. I double-carry, and at the time was using a canvas canoe. I always carry the pack first so I can scout out a portage. On this one, I fell with the pack not too far from where you did on Mole-Raja, just a little bit before that dip down next to the creek. I was very muddy, and I'd had to go around a LOT of blowdowns at that point. Had the same trouble you did scrambling back up from the creek, that was a remarkably steep little scramble. BUT - it was shortly after that scramble that I completely lost the trail. Then I thought how awful it would be to get the canoe even that far, and after several minutes of not being able to get a bearing on the trail, gave up on it. I've been debating taking another shot at it, but I'm wondering - when you took your tumble on that portage, how far in do you think you were? When I tried it I was thinking that dip-down-scramble-up point was maybe 400-450 meters from Raja, meaning just a little past the halfway point. Thanks very much for posting by the way. There are very, very few trip reports on this route.

Very nice. I have done the West Coast Trail, which is just north of the piece you did. It is quite similar in terms of terrain etc. I guess you could combine them for about 10 days of hiking. But WCT has the Parks Canada fees, some tricky (paid) lake crossings and logistics to/from Port Renfrew and Bamfield. IMHO, if you are a canoe tripper at heart, hiking just feels like ... an endless portage. Sure, it is one without a canoe, but still. There is something about the balance of paddle and portage that is magical. There is a balance there, where you are not doing the same thing every day, all day. The one gives a break from the other, and vice-versa. The other thing about doing these trails when you are used to Central Ontario tripping is the stress of making sure you have fresh water available to you. It's quite a difference going from paddling in an effectively unlimited supply of the stuff to making sure you have to fill up at the creeks (and make safe for drinking) often enough that you don't run out before you next chance to get some.
@MattHaughn10 ай бұрын
We actually looked into the West Coast Trail, but didn’t have enough time for it on this trip. Maybe next time! Thankfully, water wasn’t a big issue for us. There were fresh water creeks all over the place and we only carried up to 1L each at time. Canoe tripping will always hold a large part of our hearts, but we really enjoyed the hiking experience and would love to explore that more. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
@xnbomb10 ай бұрын
@@MattHaughn With respect to water, it sounds like WCT is a bit tougher than Juan de Fuca. The gaps between the creeks can be quite a bit farther apart, and there are also places where you have some options on the trail (whether to stay up high on top of the cliff, or descend down to the beach) where the creek is not readily available in all cases.
