On this cut of Touchdown Talk with College Football with Sam, ‪@BIG10_Quicktalk‬ and I compare the new 18-team Big Ten Conference to the previous 14-team Big Ten, which has existed since 2014. Big Ten Football is undergoing major changes, as Oregon Football and USC Football look to end Michigan Football and Ohio State Football's reign of terror over the conference. Smaller members are also looking to jump into the big leagues such as Michigan State and Nebraska. Is Big Ten football better, worse, or the same entering 2024? A few hypotheses I have: - The new Big Ten schedules are obviously better for balance. - The conference will be much more competitive and deeper in the long run. - This season, the top Big Ten teams will be a tier below 2023 Michigan and maybe even 2023 Ohio State.

Better, more than 3 teams matter for the first time in forever. Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State are playoff caliber teams. USC, Michigan, Wisconsin are fringe playoff teams depending on how the chips fall for them. Nebraska could be very solid this year. Iowa is in a tier of there own because the way they’ve won in the last few years with all defense and no offense is impressive but absolutely insanity and one has to think with conference being better overall they won’t win that many games this year in a deeper Big Ten. Rutgers is a wildcard team if they can have a serviceable QB because they are good upfront on both sides and have about 7-8 players that will be playing in the NFL next year but QB play could be awful.

I agree that the conference overall is much deeper than it ever has been. Nebraska and Michigan State are two programs that I think will contend for titles in the future. Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon, and Michigan are clearly leading the pack right now, with USC having a shot to follow close behind entering 2024.

I don't get the Nebraska hype. 5 and 7 last season. Freshman Quarterback? Why all the love?

The hype is because NEB has put proven pieces (see proven wrs Jahmal Banks, Isaiah Nayor, and Jaylon Lloyd- also stud TE Thomas Fidone- plus 4 solid RB's) around one of the most talented Freshmen in the circuit- plus most of the 11th ranked total Defense returns- PLUS an easy af schedule leads to justified hype imo. My only trouble with this roster is the O-line and its depth- but they have the pieces to be avg, but again will that be enough for a freshman qb...dunno.

Imma boomer fan of out west hs- and cfb players. I totally believe in '24 Nebby - a very balanced and pretty complete team. I luv GBR's DC. If Neb gets just ok+ qb play, the 'skers can win 7 or 8 games, maybe more.

Elite Defense, Entire starting offense was injured by mid-season last year, QB should be better just by not turning the ball over 2 out of every 3 series and they are near the top of the country for returning production- much of which is now depth with some key additions in the portal. Nebraska also has a very favorable schedule. Dropping the division format is great for Nebraska as it might actually balance the schedules again.

Take from this what you will. Better: Ohio State, Oregon, Rutgers, Minnesota, Penn State, Indiana, Illinois. Worse: Michigan, Washington, USC, Northwestern, Maryland, UCLA. The Same: Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Michigan State.

The top QB1 is at Penn State, supposedly. OSU & Oregon have, at best, mid QB1s who probably won’t even be drafted. Michigan State might have the second best QB1, on paper. This conference is more wide open now than ever before and the hype with Oregon is sus. OSU has the best overall talent, as they do every year, but it’s not as good as three and two years ago. Nebraska is sneaky good & could shock some teams. Michigan could surprise everyone and win it all, because of that stout D & an Orji built to penetrate quickly & often. No Diddy.

Drew allar is not good 😂😂 Oregon has a solid QB1 who fits in the Oregon system better than allar at psu. Their roster is neck and neck with OSU and is more talented than Penn state. Michigan st’s QB Is nothing special just a dual threat. It’s not more wide open then ever before because the same teams are stacking with more resources than any other bottom feeders in the conference

Florida State and Clemson joining BigTen……We will soon see 9-3 BigTen teams making the 12 team fields with regularity particularly if BigTen teams also plays non conference Top 20 teams like ND, OKU, Texas.

@@andrewmueller9986 you had to play SIX GAMES to qualify. IU was 6-1. Ohio State didn’t play SIX GAMES. So the conference rewrote the rules to get their cash cow into the game. The same bs that let Michigan cheat its way to the playoff this year. $$$$$$$$$&$. Hardly even a sport at this point.

I know they re-wrote the rules. Which was the right and smart thing to due. OSU didn't have a loss so their win % was better than IUs AND they beat them head to head. You're basically arguing that IU should have gone to the cg because they got lucky enough that covid did not effect them as much. Recall that Michigan cancelled on OSU. That's not a normal season, so in that context, re-writing the rules isn't a travesty. They realized that the initial rule of needing 6 was stupid, as it was. IU should not get to go because a stupid rule helped them out. It is disappointing that there are people like you that think that a silly arbitrary rule should decide something like that.

@@andrewmueller9986 the rules are meaningless if you rewrite them to favor one team over another to get the result you want. The B1G wanted its marquee team in the game and the bent over backwards to get it.
