Jordan at 24:34 -- "I didn't realize C4 would be that explosive." That explosion wasn't only the C4. Notice that there was an initial explosion immediately followed by multiple secondary explosions. The bad guys operating the missile launcher had dropped one of their missiles next to the elevator moments earlier while they were racing to set up the launcher, and they also had an entire crate of missiles with them. John's improvised C4 bomb detonated the dropped missile, and that explosion set off the remaining missiles in the crate.

The "fists with your toes" thing is actually a technique that's often recommended for people suffering from anxiety. I've found it to be surprisingly effective. It's not just for flying. General anxiety relief tactic. John's stubbornness is why the Die Hard franchise works. That's what the term means. Someone who won't give up on whatever. A die hard (sports team) fan, for example. Hans Gruber is one of the best movie villains ever. Alan Rickman's first American movie, and he knocked it out of the park. Ellis may be a sleazeball, but at least he didn't give up Holly as John's wife. The guy who played Theo also played Travett in Walker Texas Ranger. Theo and Argyle return in the Die Hard battery commercial. The C4 detonated all of the rocket launcher rockets, and whatever else the baddies had on that floor. Though, the monitor as a detonator works because when CRT monitors are smashed, it produces a small electrical charge. Violent Night is a great Die Hard/Home Alone parody, with Santa. Epic fun.

"Welcome to the party, pal!" It isn't Christmas in my house until Hans Gruber is THROWN off the top of Nakatomi Plaza. 😎 Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁 Fun Fact: In 2007, Bruce Willis donated John McClane's undershirt to the Smithsonian Museum. Making Lemonade Fact: The scene where McClane (Bruce Willis) falls down a shaft was a mistake by the stuntman, who was supposed to grab the first vent, as it originally was planned. He slipped and continued to fall, but the shot was used anyway; it was edited together with one where McClane grabs the next vent down as he falls. When Worlds Collide Fact: The scene in which Gruber (Alan Rickman) and McClane (Bruce Willis) meet for the first time was inserted into the script after Alan Rickman was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman's talent. Casting Notes Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first American film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career. Location Location Fact: The fictional Nakatomi Plaza is the headquarters of 20th Century Studios, so the studio could use one of its own buildings and didn't have to hold back on stunts and action sequences. While Jeb Stuart was writing the screenplay, he did a tour of the building, and immediately incorporated some of the locations and objects he found there into his script as set pieces. The company charged itself rent for the use of the then-unfinished building. Some of the middle floors were occupied by legal and administrative departments, so only empty floors were used for filming. Still, the filming of scenes that involved gunfire had to be postponed until after hours because some of the employees from the active floors started to complain about the noise.

Ear damage fact: Bruce Willis suffered permanent ear damage and loss of hearing during the under the table scene where he shoots the bad guy up through the table. Extra loud blanks were used but Willis had no hearing protection. The blast in the confined space did permanent damage to his left ear iirc and he got a big payout for damages. He's lived with hearing loss since then.

39:00: Well, and he's not invulnerable. A lot of action heroes previously would just either miraculously not get hit no matter how much the bad guys fired at them, or walk it off like it was a mosquito bite. John gets really roughed up through the film, to the point audiences seeing it when it came out wondered if he was going to survive. It adds to the tension and drama, the he accumulates wounds and damage, that his effectiveness steadily drops through the movie, so the final showdown, where he's barely hanging on physically and has only two bullets left, the tension is unbearable.

As a fan of action movies in the '80's (Born 1970, so I was a teenager), there's a certain context that is lost about this movie. Compared to most of them (Except for top-tier ones like 'Aliens'), 'Die Hard' was BRUTALLY realistic. When my friends and I first saw it shortly after release, we were amazed at how plausible they made everything seem. Even things like reloading guns, so many movies before this never even bothered to keep track of. My Dad loved it because John McClane felt so much like a normal guy and not a Superhuman. The film was also notable in that prior to this, Bruce Willis was NOT thought of as an action star. So much so that it was seen as a risk to give him the role. Prior to this his biggest role was in the TV Show, 'Moonlighting', which was definitely not an action series. There was even a small shout-out to the show in the bickering between John and Holly, as Bruce's and Cybill Shepard's bickering in Moonlighting was legendary.

Die Hard was in 1988 and Home Alone was in 1990, so it is more that Home Alone was the children's version of Die Hard. The Die Hard release occurred after the mid-80s wave of muscle-man uber-action films where largely invulnerable mega-men owned dozens of bad guys at a time. The John McClane character was the refreshing breeze after this period (Bruce Willis was previously in Moonlighting and no one thought he was a realistic action hero) as the gritty hero that outlasted and outwitted his enemies. A great landmark film.

One brick of C4 (plus the handful of blasting caps used to prime it, which is a nice detail) still wouldn't be enough to make that kind of damage, but the potential for sympathetic detonation of the rocket munitions near the elevator shaft just might. Someone elsewhere in the comments suggests _Speed,_ and I would second that. _Predator,_ the first in the franchise, is not to be missed, and the most recent _Prey_ is also very good. Then there's the _Bourne_ movies with Matt Damon, of which the first two are the best; I'm gonna finish with _Leon: the professional_ starring Jean Reno and a very young Natalie Portman, who absolutely kills it as a naive but fierce girl who wants to avenge the death of her entire family. Bruce Willis was known for Moonlighting and singing before this hit cinemas. Trailers shown actually had people laughing out loud when they saw Willis' tough guy character. Fears at the studio were so high that Willis was removed from the marketing material and the poster simply showed the building. How little did we all know. Fun fact when the van opens and the goons step out there is no ambulance in the back as they had not written the ending yet. Also the journalist was called "Dick" Thornburg and the two FBI guys were called "Johnson". Paul Gleason who played Dept. Dwayne T Robinson playes the absolute worst dick in The Breakdfast Club (which SHOULD be on your list). Top action movies ; - The Raid 1 & 2 - Indonesian but directed by a Welshman Gareth Evans (watch Gangs of London TV !) - Commando & Predator - Schwarzenegger's infinitely quotable, cheesy but fun 80s action romps - Dredd - Alex Garland (The Beach) gritty sci-fi cult classic - Sicario - Denis Vilnueve (Dune) with Emily Blunt getting sucked into CIA black ops against Mexican drug cartels with Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro - Elite Squad 1 & 2 - this is not for reviewers as nobody is ever going to do this. This is for the fans of these channels. These are the story of the police enforcers that work in the Favela in Rio de Janeiro, a story of abuse of power and police corruption. ES 2 is a top five film of mine.

A stuntman did do that fall into an airbag. And the reason why Alan Rickman looked terrified is because he was! For the close-up falling shot, he was hanging on a wire above a Blue Screen. And they filmed two limited falls with a quick break on the wire. They weren't getting what they wanted so, on the third fall, the director actually let him fall 30 feet before hitting the break. So that look of absolute terror on his face is real. He thought that he was actually falling.

John McClane is the OG "every day man" action hero. Sure he is a cop, but he isnt a hand-to-hand combat expert fighter like a Van Damme, or ex-war veteran super jacked characters that Schwarzenegger or Stallone were portraying that were dominating the 80s action movie genre at that time. It opened the doors for more possibilities for the genre as a smart, well plotted, story driven movie and not just an excuse to blow things up and shoot up dozens of people.

C4 is pretty powerful but here's the funny thing, it's inert. Without an explosive charge to set it off, it's just a type of clay. You can make a flowerpot out of it.

The trivia behind this movie is amazing . Bruce Willis was consider to be a joke to be cast in an action movie. The way the movie was shot changed action movies forever . Bruce lost some of his hearing due to the explosions and gun fire. Alan Rickman's first movie. The actor who played Karl was a world renown ballet dancer who's defection was made into a movie itself

Die Hards 2,3 and 4 also good. I haven't seen no 5. Check out Long Kiss Goodnight with Samuel Jackson and Geena Davis.

Die Hard 2 is sillier but still fun. DH3 is good too. Also recommend Terminator and Terminator 2; T2 is considered even better than the first one by many.

You should watch Die Hard 2 and 3 as well. Also, you might enjoy the movie Big Trouble in little China.
