Some work on a collected bougainvillea with a massive trunk. Out of the growing tub it was planted in after collection and into a bonsai training pot. Now it needs to grow some branches!

I love my little bogi, I tried to limit myself to five plants. It is my top tree. I hope she enjoys it as much as I do. BEST OF LUCK FROM SOUTH FLORIDA...

I am in Queensland Australia Bougainvillea grow very well here, however getting them to this size is difficult. Love your work and have learnt a great deal from watching your videos. I am fairly new to Bonsai (about 5 yrs) since I retired from full time work. Keep up the good work.

Those big cuts will never heal over.

They are not intended to. They will eventually be hollowed out and covered over by foliage. However it is important to see where new shoots will emerge on the trunk before doing the final deadwood carving. I am in Cali, not Florida, and Bougainvilleas do not bud back as readily here, necessitating a different carving technique than what the Florida folks use.

I was more partial to the " W. Pall" look for this specimen, but I can appreciate what you envision for this.

QUESTIONs: (A) What do you use as a root stock for your bougainvillea-grafts? (B) Have you used other species as root-stock for bougainvillea? (C). other-grafts? (D). Have you thought to use a different root-stock for variety/strength? (E). or to graft to an actual (grown/young/old) tree (on its trunk that's leveled or on its branches or something?).

You're one brave soul! I could have never cut that tree like that, l wouldn't have had the nerve. Now I have a question. It has nothing to do with what you're doing now.I have a Bamboo plant, or I should say shoot, and it is 12 inches tall and growing very fast. I wanted to know how I can keep it this size.
