Darkmatter dtom what advantages? Your not winning any races because you have an auto in an abarth? Sure it might be a little faster but this is not a straight line car, on a racetrack you only use second and third Maybe fourth.

Being an Abarth owner this car is extremely fun to drive and I get compliments often from random folk. I've also been on two roadtrips up the Northeast and the car gave me no issues. I agree that the manual definitely begs for a 6th gear, I was overtaking too well in 5th and that should not be. I think these cars are a bargain on the used market, they can be found for under $10k if not just slightly over. Get it, take the back seats out, throw on some mods and you have a nice street legal track car.

The Fiat Abarth is awesome! I bought a used 2013 with a few modded goodies for $7,500. I’ve had it two years now and even driving it this morning, the sounds and power delivery still puts a smile on my face. This car defies all logic. It’s slow, but feels fast, it sits up high and has a narrow wheelbase, but handles great. The turbo (Especially with a chip upgrade and mass air intake) gives it a massive power surge that feels fast. I also have an 02 S2000 that is much faster, but the acceleration feels so much slower than the Fiat. Like I said... defies logic. The 5-speed manual is the way to go. A 6th gear would have been nice, but you get use to it. I think the automatic transmissions are a big contributor to the 500’s bad reputation. I do get a check engine light every few weeks, but it’s always been the aftermarket ECU just needs to be reset. Unplug the negative battery terminal or disconnect the ECU for a few minutes, hook it back up, and it runs like a champ. Do recommend the Torque app and a Bluetooth OBDII reader just to be safe. In two years, I haven’t had to do anything more than basic maintenance. It is fun to drive every time I get in it!

hello from Brazil, here the 1.4 is one of the most tuned engines because it's affordable and makes a good amount of power (big v8 with 400+hp are very rare here). The main car here with this engine is the Fiat Punto T-jet and the Bravo T-jet. the basic tune here (the most people start with) for them is a cat delete and E100 conversion that gets you to around 180whp (+- 210hp) and the next step is bigger turbo, intercooler, better air intake, etc, etc, and with that, they easily get past 240whp(+ -280hp). The good thing about the punto is that the bigger engine bay leaves you with more room for upgrades. And here these 1.4 engines are only sold with manual 6 or 5 gear transmission

Just wanted to give some background information as you missed quite a few points. The fiat you are driving is a SOHC with a multi-air brick. The multi-air brick is an electronically actuated, pneumatically charged (by oil pressure) brick that controls intake cycles. These engines, while great from the factory, can’t really make very much horsepower, especially in the high rpm as the multi-air unit was designed to increase torque and power at low engine speed. Getting 220-250 BHP is about as much as you could make from a multi-air engine, anything after that and you’ll have troubles. The European fiats have a DOHC “turbo-jet” engine with a much higher rev range and ironically more reliability, as it uses a common DOHC setup rather than a proprietary multi-air unit. The Alfa Romeo 4C uses a DOHC setup for European models as well, but even in the states, it doesn’t share the fiat engine. The 4C is a 1.7L BiTurbo, making nearly 100 BHP over the fiat 500’s multiair. Hope I helped someone learn something new.

Great review. You did the auto justice. I'm looking forward to the next few years as they disappear from American roads where they are already a rare sight. Keeping mine forever. As the owner of a street strip car as well I will state this truth. It is much more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car fast... It's just a fun car to drive without pretentious visions of grandeur. It is not for the thin skinned or the prudish types. It's a brash little car that entices the inner juvenile delinquent that resides in some of us constant egging you on. It handles like no front wheel drive should yet unlike the competition whom frankly build more powerful refined vehicles. Well the Abarth has something all of those superior competitors lack. Character. It's to bad America was to worried about impressing some stranger at a stop light with big boring Subs and Pick-up trucks. How lame...

It's so weird to see an Abarth with automatic transmissions, because here in Brazil we see only manual transmission on Abarth, the automatic is only optional on the 1.4 16v, and single clutch automated manual on 1.4 8v engines.

In my opinion, the Fiat 500 should have been a mid-engine subcompact, instead of that little bubble hatch. I've driven the base and Sport trims, but would love to toss around the Abarth. Seems very entertaining.

Apparently a higher-up at ferrari daily drives an abarth 500 so that says a lot about this little monster

When you have a 300c, you don't have a spare tire, you have a 500 as a spare car in the boot...

You had time till the auto
@Doooshty4 жыл бұрын
It's not as terrible as you think. I'm the owner and I wasn't looking for an auto, I wasn't even looking for an Abarth. It was such an amazing deal I had to buy it. It's a very good automatic, especially with the tune. It's not for everyone though
@brandonwright65784 жыл бұрын
Dustin Allen oh I’m not saying it’s horrible I used to own a Srt4 two of them but there’s something about a turbo auto that in theory sounds so bad lol 😂.
@Ruru240z4 жыл бұрын
@@brandonwright6578 'in theory' because you can't just downshift to enjoy the sound of a vehicle with a good sound? I own 2 Cobalt SS, one auto, one manual. My auto is my daily driver as I live in a city and my manual is for when I want to go on a long drive. Edit: both are running a turbo with a tune and push around 290 to the front wheels.
@Doooshty4 жыл бұрын
@@brandonwright6578 it's a really good automatic. It's designed and tuned for the car. It will do engine braking, hold a gear throughout a corner. It's not perfect, it's only real issue is when you put it in manual mode and try to think for it.
@brandonwright65784 жыл бұрын
Ruru240z well good for you it’s my opinion and many alike. I don’t live in the City and never would outskirts for me one of those reasons is less traffic so I can enjoy the things I drive and have the other is because generally the roads are smoother for that drive to be heavenly and quiet to each there own 🙏🏾 god bless my state of low traffic Az.

The 500 Abarth definitely deserves more recognition. Yeah, it's not a traditional sports car, but it's fun and fast enough to get you in trouble. Sadly, 2020 is the last year that the 500 will be sold in the US. I won't be surprised if in a few years Fiat withdraws from the US market again.

It’s a heritage car that’s a staple sports/grocery getter similar to say the WRX. It’s also a love hate car, high on passion low on reliability. Very useable for the city, misunderstood at so many levels. It will continue to thrive in Europe. This is not a pure Italian car but a world global car. Hope that Fiat can survive here in the US longer, but it looks bleak. Not to mention the push to have electrics. Thanks for your review David.
@aaronstepien23634 жыл бұрын
It’s already electric like all the generic $30k eCars. I drive one and it’s been the perfect city car for me personally (edit I drive the internal combustion one, haha)
