@dannie20feb This is Mike Parsons in 2003 at Jaws. The wave was measured at 64 feet. It was filmed from a helicopter and is the first shot in a movie about big wave surfing call' Billabong Odyssey.

@antonioaparicio1997 ... At the time of this video, this was the biggest wave (documented) ever surfed, but this has been broken a few times. So you are correct. In 2009 Miguel Del Toro surfed a wave estimated to be around 100 feet at an obscure break off the coast of Patagonia.

I learned to surf in the late 1950s on France’s Atlantic coast in the large swells and reef breaks of Brittany but spent my best years on the pure glass surf of Malibu in California. Across the years I heard persistent rumours of giant waves off the west coast of Portugaland and now Hawaiian Garrett McNamara used the recent storms at Nazaré to ride a 90-foot Praia do Norte deep-water canyon monster to break Mike Parsons' 2001 world record of 77-foot at California’s Cortes Bank.

@georgzp ... Yes, it was filmed at Jaws (the real name is Peahi), but it's located on the north shore of Maui, not Oahu. I used to live about 30 minutes from there.

omg, almost gave me a heart attack. we had 10 ft swells todays and that freaked me out enough. EMT's were just chillin on the cliffs...just in case, ya know? You've gota drop straight down that shit....how the hell did he not lean back. I'm thoughorly impressed.

That was real. Every year the great surfer around the world gather in Hawaii during December where their is a big wave about 15 meters high. One of the greatest dangers is the risk of being held underwater by two or more consecutive waves. These hazards have killed several big-wave surfers.

This is a video of Mike Parsons competing in the Billabong Surfing Competition in 2006. It was at "Jaws" in Maui, Hawaii. It's real. Jaws gets waves of 60-80 feet in winter. This was in November.

yeh its called tow-in surfing, it to get you up to speed with the wave, this is something Tad Hamilton invented/perfected, and the location is Waimea Hawaii

The surfers name is Mike Parsons who earned a score 10 out of 10 in a tow surf contest in a place called Jaws somewhere off the hawain islands. This is a factual clip and can be found in the documentary called " Billabong Odyssee.

Not fake, I live in Hawaii, this year (2009) we already had a 60ft day and a couple 40+ days. Tomorrow on just a random Tuesday in the winter its going to be 25-35ft on North Shore. This is Jaws off Maui

I have seen a lot of people call this clip fake on youtube its from some billabong video im pretty sure there on the tip of africa somewhere. awesome video part only people who get gnar on the daily really understand the importance of this kind of behavior.

It was ocurred in Portugal, Nazaré These waves are appering every year and its name was "canhão de nazaré". there's a guy, Macnamara who surf these waves. This year he surf one with 30 meters of high.

Im not a surfer but i have a question, is it considered less "legit" to surf with your feet strapped in within the surfer community or is it pretty much impossible to surf big waves without being attached?

Dave Travina got lucky from the wave that owned him.Slater missed this time. David got his and found luck the hard way, lived to talk about it, while Hamilton owns luck and tamed this wave with comfortable confidence, hard core bravado,and a surf or die tryin attitude. kudos and props to laird

why do people say that this is fake? it looks like its a wave a piahi (jaws) and this stuff is done on a daily basis by people like dave kalama, rush randall and most importantly laird hamilton.

It's not green screened. This was filmed at Jaws where 50 foot waves are common in the winter.
