BIG Whiting on Surface lure: Fishing Bobbin head flats

Decided to follow up on a previous conquest to try and target some larger whiting on Surface. Had to fish from a different system I wasn't familiar with but worked out well by beating my PB whiting twice in the same session. I hope yous enjoy

OK So I believe you are on the track that goes from the back of the Marina up to the "waterhole", then if you keep going, that trail goes up to The KHS school, and the "Sphinx" = Young Fletcher - I have spent literally 40+ years of my life around this area, so I know every bend, twist, nook, and cranny..... I went to the KHS school ( 1983-1988) - we used to go down to the river often in Summer arvo's during year 10/11/12. Plus I have camped/hiked/fished/ explored literally searched every single inch of the area/river from the "waterhole" - where the trail heads back up to the Sphinx, and kayaked/swam/Zodiac boated etc the entire area/river from the upper reaches that go towards St.Ives, all the way down to the Marina. You are VERY lucky to nail Whiting... Back in 1983-1988 - we used to fish the wharf there at Bobbin Head ( now that dinky wharf with the Chinese paddle boat rentals) - where the Central Coast Ferry comes too. - Back then, we would use chicken gut, and catch massive Bream, and Mulloway. And almost every time we went there - there were these Greek/Italian ( I think ) people with their massive custom 14ft rods, with no reel, and using this " special" dough/bread mix to catch huge Mullet - it was incredible. We caught so many HUGE bream there. Back then in the 80's - Bobbin Head was really good to catch Bream/Blackfish/Trevally/Kingfish/Jewfish/ Tailor etc.... Not fished out, and I spent soooooooooooooo many Sat/Sundays down there with my mate, and also alone fishing all day and all night - my Mum would drop me off, then pick me up. But sometime I'd go home via the Bus that went to Turramurra Station - then I would go to Rohini St Fish & Chip shop on the corner there - and get a small chips, and a few potato scallops with lemon and vinegar... and if I had the money I would get a Chocolate MOOVE!.....

Mate I literally show how to get there in the video, walk upstream from the Marina and hit the flats. Even if I didn’t spell it out to you it’s not hard to do a quick 2 minutes of research to find out that whiting hit surface in shallow water sand flats

@@fletchersfishing chill mate - I love you videos....keep up the great work. The only thing I HATE about all these type videos is that you always make it so "secretive" - maybe not you so much, but 99% do, and when people ask - they respond NSW or Sydney ETC. If you are are true good faith fisho - you share with others because you love fishing, and it is ALWAYS so much more about skill, knowledge etc, than just chucking out a servo prawn..... So don't get me wrong mate - I love your videos, but just think about helping those newbies that look up to you and want to be great fishos, but they are not you!!!. Big Love mate xo

Mate there are a couple of videos where I refuse to share my spots. I don’t have to share all my spots with everyone, a lot of these places I want to keep quiet so that it stops pollution and those people who rape and pillage undersized fish every time they fish. The only spots I share with my viewers are the already well known fishing areas

Great to see you went down to Bobbin Head. Try going a bit more up river - there are plenty of good spots. Scent usually helps if they follow but do not commit.

the ones who don't commit are probably bream. so you need to twitch and pause and they probably will commit

I’m still pretty average at walking the dog. I can skip cast, fly fish, pitch, roll etc. But this technique is just stupid nothing I am crap at. Any tips? Cheers

I’m not sure if I can offer any tips other than what some other instructional yt videos can provide. I think it must just take some practise. However I’ve noticed walking the dog action can be harder or easier depending on the lure. The more bent (banana shaped) the lure is the easier it tends to walk the dog. Lures like the sugapenn are harder to walk the dog on, but that’s part of the design, because you have the option of having a more subtle action vs a very wide sway. A more subtle action is better when imitating shrimp/prawns, or working in a heavily fished area

Do you remember what time of day it was you started?

I think it was around 10-11 am ish. Middle of the day correlated with peak of low tide and I’ve found the warmer the water is when the whiting are most active

Hi champ, just curious how deep was the water where you were casting to. I’m Sydney based & haven’t had any success on top water whiting. I use sugapens & similar types

Yeah man, honestly it really depends on a lot of factors. I’ve found that whiting can hit in almost any depth of water between ankle deep and what I can estimate 1.5m deep. I find that between the 1-0.5 m mark is the golden zone is especially for quality whiting and possible flattys. It also is very dependant on the water temp and what the system your fishing is like in terms of health and fishing pressure

Yeah probably not the smartest idea I’ve had and definitely do not want to lead by example. I know for a fact that bull sharks are in that area so you’re definitely right

Indeed it was summer. I’ve never had any luck with whiting any other time of year, nov, dec, Jan and Feb are the only months that have seemed to work for me
