Hey thank you for the suggestion. I do actually have plans on making a video about all the Blue colored jays here in North America. It probably won't be made until sometime in Fall or over winter. All depends on many factors. Definitely something I plan to do in the near future though :)

She's so smart! She eventually determined that the narrower side of the wood chip would need to go through the opening first. So, she grasped one narrow side and flew up to fit it right through! Fascinating!

Lesley: Mae, the female Chestnut Backed Chickadee that used the nest box this year on my deck, I also saw her struggling to get large but curled Cedar chips out of the nest box. I witnessed this back on March 26th from my recliner next to my patio door. A friend of mine had cut these chips with a hand plane last fall so I could put some fresh chips in the nest box. But I should have broken them up a little before I put them in there. I ended up when Mae was gone, reaching into to the nest box hole with a flexible grabber tool and taking a bunch of the chips out and breaking them up myself then put them back in. This year's batch of Chestnut chicklets were all fledged by 7:15 on June 15th. I got to witness probably the last chicklet leave the nest. The day before I had photographed and videoed them looking out of the nest box. It seems from the last two years at least, once they start looking out, it does not take much longer for them to leave. Lesley I need to get some advice from you. Please look for my emails.

That is wonderful about there being chickadees nesting in your box. Interesting that it is meant for wrens but they are using it, I guess chickadees can be pretty flexible with what they will nest in. Too bad about you not being able to watch what is going on inside. My chickadee house fledged 4 nestlings this year and I could still hear the juveniles chirping from the trees as they followed mom or dad for the next few weeks. I line my bird houses with cedar shavings and this habit of theirs is new to me. Inky is cute, thanks for posting!

Oh my goodness, I LOVED Inky's determination and persistence! What a character! And talk about inspiring, my gosh... sometimes the biggest lessons come from the smallest creatures. I feel I got to know Inky and her spunky personality even better after this video, and boy is she oh so winsome! I also adore her attention to detail; she's not having no large wood chips under her eggs, no-siree! Only the softest lining for her brood-to-be. Fantastic video and thank you SO much sharing, Lesley! P.S. While I was birding today, I came across 6+ chickadees having quite the commotion and thought of you, Lesley... I thought: "Lesley would know what this is about!" I've watched your video on the meaning of their calls but can't remember the info and was trying to figure out what was going on but really couldn't... all I know is some of those chickadees were NOT happy... territory defense perhaps, or protecting fledglings or nearby predator??? They are incredible to watch and are as plucky and dauntless as they are small!

I love how you described her not wanting large pieces under her eggs, haha made me giggle :) About what you saw, without witnessing it myself I can't say for sure, but it certainly sounds similar to what I see when two different flocks come together. They can get into quite the raucous. I wonder if it was a territory defense. It could also be that a predator was near and the parents were teaching their babies while trying to protect them too. Yesterday my spouse was gardening near one of our chickadee nest boxes. She was intently watched and repeatedly scolded by the nesting pair. They eventually determined she really wasn't a threat so continued with their parental duties bringing food to their brood.

My chickadees make nests in bare nest boxes, but will build a thick layer of moss and animal hairs that is two inches thick and as soft as cotton balls. I think of the Princess and the Pea.

One of my pet female budgies does something similar. There is a food cup she has decided is her nest, and nothing is allowed in it, ever. She will climb in and kick or throw out any food we put inside, so we have to put another food bowl lower down for them to eat from. Budgies make nests in tree cavities as well, so I suppose they have a similar instinct. It is amazing how determined she gets about keeping it clean, just like Inky.
