My only gripe with the Thanksgiving one was the Football gag at the beginning. Lucy is only there for that one scene, and then disappears for the rest of it. Linus is there, but her absence is never explained. I'd wish she got invited to CB's impromptu Dinner, but she'd be roasting him harder than Patty was.

I laughed SO DAMN HARD at the comments about Linus stealing Charlie Brown’s girl all the time. Also, you are SO on-point about the current Peanuts rights holders just protecting a brand now. I think that was going on long before Apple entered the picture, though - once Schulz and Melendez were out of the picture, it became a Product Factory designed to sell more Snoopy holiday decorations and Joe Cool sweatshirts from Kohls. What true Peanuts had was a core of dark and weird stuff under the witty quips and precocious wisdom - your jokes about Linus’ faith in the Great Pumpkin being cult-like are on target. I’d like to see you do a video about the Peanuts feature films - your commentary is fall-on-the-floor hilarious and very insightful.

I want AppleTV to make a Peanuts special or show based on the super _old_ strips Schultz made in the early ‘50s. I’m talking the strips where everyones’ heads were oversized, Charlie Brown didn’t have depression, Snoopy was an ordinary dog, and Lucy was a psychotic, bug-eyed toddler.

Okay... in their 57 years of existence (72 if you're counting the comic strips), HOW have they not made a 4th of July special??? They're already rehashing Christmas, Valentines Day, and New Years, but you're telling me they haven't done Independence Day yet!?

At the risk of coming off edgy: it may also be because the sincerity of 4th of July was in decline from the 1960s onward. The trend of "America Bad" began, in good faith, with the Vietnam War protests. By the late 1960s a holiday like 4th of July was starting to be scrutinized. That scrutiny has since morphed into a really scratter-brained, and frankly childish knee-jerk cry to hate the US at all times (including being okay with very dictatorial nations like Russia) but at the time of the specials even Schulz had misgivings about nationalism.

Watching Peanuts specials was never a traditional thing in my country like it is in America, so that nostalgia was never really there. But for some reason, I'm not really sure why, i started watching A Charlie Brown Christmas every year since my late teens to the point that its become my own tradition and i read like a decades worth of the comic strips, and i still feel some level of nostalgia even though i didn't grow up with it. Now rank the Peanuts children based on how physically strong they are. Like we all know Charlie Brown could take Linus or Rerun, but he would get his ass whooped by Lucy. But can he take Franklin? Pigpen?
@buttersbb3328 Жыл бұрын
Are you talking "Who would win in a fight?" I think the rankings heavily depend on circumstances. Linus w/o blanket is low tier, but Linus w/ blanket is high tier, he can expertly use the blanket as a whip. Marcie is very high tier as well, she punched a kid out with one blow when angry, and beat up a camp bully off screen as well. Charlie Brown has insane endurance and impressive feats, but he has a bad habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. If they had a fighting tournament, Charlie would probably make it to the grand finals, and then somehow knock himself out before landing the final blow.

I noticed some other things when I watched the Christmas special as an adult. I noticed that we were supposed to get a sense of time passing when Charlie Brown was directing the Christmas play. And they could have given us that with a few simple crossfades. The hard cuts make it feel like an unbroken few minutes. I also realized, finally, that the piano music and dancing were the play all along. Or perhaps they were a symbolic stand-in for the actual play. When I was a kid, I always thought that Charlie Brown's actors cared so little about him that they just played music and danced instead of rehearsing.
@Reds994 Жыл бұрын
Watched It's the Small Things a few weeks ago and it kills me. I love the vibrant colors and I feel like they really captured the look of the character in motion while making each scene look like a painting. I enjoyed how they got Snoopy and Woodstock bits in more as background gags so to not break up the pace and each child got a time to shine, even if Chuck and Patty sound a bit off (I also don't think Patty, the most athletically proud kid would use a motor on her bike). You get that great scene where Sally shows up wanting to play since she's 5 and Charlie promised. I thought they'd have him weasel out of it but no; he's a great older brother and really lets her try, much to the dismay of his players, but he cares about the promise he made to her. Then the flower plot comes in and you see the tension building. At this point I was on board. I figured everyone would be pushing Charlie to get her to leave / kill the flower but again he stands by her and lets he stay with the flower. I was hoping the lesson would be that Sally finally realizes that her little escaped is taking something away from her brother that he truly cares about; his baseball game. The one he's been looking forward to and practicing for all year. She would remember how he unconditionally supported her joining the team and protecting her flower and now that she sees him upset but still standing by her she would agree to move the weed... But no. They fight over it and the weed dies and they play it like it's Charlie's fault? I went from loving it to hating it so quickly my head spun. Are the other AppleTV ones that bad, I haven't watched them yet. I skipped those parts as to not spoil, if I do watch them. Great video. :)

I started watching Peanuts animations because of your last video. Peppermint Patty is so cool. So thanks for that, even the strip adaptations are a lot of fun. What you said about the Apple TV specials rang true for me. They're written well, but thats the issue. Its a boiler plate sappy children's special script. But it misses the point of the characters and the strips. I think people want to uplift the material because that's what is best for the corporate image of Peanuts at this point in time. Not that Schulz didnt do impressive things with the strip, or people weren't inspired by it. But still... I think they're trying to give peanuts more staying power in this current political climate. I guess Obama giving the foreword of the final compilation book in 2016 was cool. But Peppermint Patty once told Franklin there arent Black players in the NHL in the strip. She's still cool though, and I do like the idea of exploring her family. But the mother's day special is just... idk, I can sort of see her behaving that way. But I think I prefer the version of her that invites herself over to others' Thanksgiving because her dad left her alone.

Linus and Sally are two sides of the same coin. Childlike innocence and belief. Also I fully believe that Linus talked to Little Red Head Heather and orchestrated Charlie's first kiss to make up for all the times he stole his girl.
@KremBotop2 ай бұрын
No wonder Sally has that hopeless crush on Linus. She's unironically more unlucky than her brother in that regard because even with so many heartbreaks elsewhere (like with Peggy Jean), Charlie still has that crush on Heather to go back to and it's even implied she does return those feelings despite him being unable to even talk to her most of the time. And I totally buy your theory if the animations can be chronologically set out of their release order. What Linus did in the New Year's special needed something big to make up for it. And as cruel as the Homecoming special's ending was, Charlie forgetting everything after the kiss makes it so that it doesn't "break continuity" and still makes the ending of the 2015 movie work.

Have you seen A Charlie Brown's Christmas Reunion? It's a fan-made animation where the characters meet as adults. It's definitely not perfect, but it's worth watching. I've also never spent so much time reading comments.

If history is to be believed, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" single-handledly caused the downfall of "aluminum Christmas trees" -- the big, gaudy, obviously fake kind, at least -- and for the next few decades we saw mostly "realistic" Christmas trees in the stores.

By the way, I wanted to point out that a peanuts character did die on screen. And it was the school building of all things. It literally collapsed due to depression and a new one had to be rebuilt. Just letting you know that beforehand. Anyways I love your videos. Happy new year to you!

Schroder a real one out there for sticking up for his man Charlie brown. also my headcanon is that snoopy got pulled a captain america and got frozen during ww1 and then was unfrozen and became Charlie browns dog. and his moment in the great pumpkin is just him going on a ptsd trip from his service in the war.

I think you really got to the heart of what's wrong with the Apple specials and with how people see Peanuts in general. There are literal decades worth of Peanuts comics to adapt or get more direct inspiration from, and yet people have come to see Peanuts as something more on par with a greeting card-- cute and disposable. Disney did similar with Mickey Mouse for years before those recent shorts came out that are absolutely hilarious. Peanuts kiiiinda did this when they got the Pearls Before Swine guy to make Happiness is a Warm Blanket, but it's admittedly a "meh" special that I have a feeling spooked the Peanuts people into staying in their lane, which is a bit of a bummer. Good video. Have you considered doing other newspaper comics videos, or is Peanuts the only one you're familiar enough with?

Honestly I really loved Happiness Is A Warm Blanket. Shermy and Patty being back somewhat in the spotlight and having lines was fun since I really love them as characters and wash oping for it for a while. Patty's a fun character and has a few handfuls of hilarious lines and moments from the comics when she was relevant and she acts a bit different without Violet or Lucy, and Shermy I like for his athleticism, the older strips where he was basically Charlie Brown's one step up in everything and his original closest friend

Based is a slang term that originally meant to be addicted to crack cocaine (or acting like you were), but was reclaimed by rapper Lil B for being yourself and not caring what others think of you-to carry yourself with swagger

I genuinely didn't know Apple TV was making new specials. They should've stopped with the movie, that was peak Peanuts. Also "Linus's incel rage" genuinely had me rolling. Subscribed.

I liked the Condominium joke as a kid because my Grandparents actually lived in a condominium back then. I don’t think it’s as funny anymore because now they live in a hole in the ground

"Charlie Brown Christmas" and "Great Pumpkin" vie for best. In the 1970s they went downhill fast, not helped by the original voices and Vince Guaraldi's score being not easily replaced, and a general lack of inspiration that caused rules to be broken (such as a visible Little Red-haired Girl, and Snoopy imagining himself to become a more realistic dog). Aside from maybe Paul Reiser's apocryphal Passover special "Let My People Go, Charlie Brown."

10:18 The tone in which he said "I'm calling the police", though 😂😭. Why is this enough to make a young man die of laughter? M callin da 🅱olice!

1. Humans eating chimpanzees would absolutely be cannibalism. 2. Birds are more diverse than mammals, therefore a bird eating a distantly related bird would be like us eating a cow. 3. Woodstock is a sparrow-like bird of the neo-aves clade; turkeys are fowls meaning they would be as distantly related as we are to marsupials.

I'm genuinely glad KZbin is a place we can adjudicate whether or not Woodstock committed cannibalism in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.

Part of Apple's deal when they bought the streaming rights says that they must provide A Charlie Brown Christmas, It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving for free for a three day window around their respective holidays.

I revisited I Want a Dog for Christmas Charlie Brown with my family last Christmas and I cannot understate how painful it was to get through. The four panel format gets old real fast especially with the B of the B Day bits. The whole thing ends up feeling 3x longer than the actual runtime

16:42 THANK YOU! That is the main issue with A Charlie Brown Valentine. Saying "Little Red-Haired Girl" 31 times! Thirty-One times! Even Ferdinand didn't say "That's right!" this many times throughout Misty Island Rescue! Just call the god dam girl Heather, you blockhead! For Auld Lang Syne should be higher. Happy New Year, Charlie Brown was downright awful. Saying For Auld Lang Syne was far better than HNYCB would be putting it just as lightly as saying Banjo and Kazooie look far better in Smash Brothers than they did in Nuts and Bolts, or saying Widget was better than Captain Planet.
@KremBotop2 ай бұрын
I'd blame Charlie's sheer insecurities for him being unable to call Heather by her name, but by that point he should've already been used to that. Even in the new year's special he did call her by name in one scene. Though the worst offender is how that newer Valentine's special completely redesigned TLRGH for no reason. And since she went unnamed there it kinda appears to be a totally different character. Thankfully the 2015 movie gave her a design that is both reminiscent of the earlier specials and her lone silhouette cameo in the strip, as well as her name being directly referenced in the test scores list.
