@dif672 7 жыл бұрын
They turned out good, but I'm wondering if my pods are a little too big. I ended up with around 30 for half a recipe so I might only fill the ice trays only half full next time.
@bigbearhomestead
@bigbearhomestead 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when we made the pods ice cube size we ended up with 60. So if you made them the size of a rounded tablespoon, you would probably get closer to 120
@sharonsmith1360
@sharonsmith1360 3 жыл бұрын
What was the total cost of all the supplies.
@besties7777
@besties7777 2 жыл бұрын
@@sharonsmith1360 probably around $20, the borax and the washing soda is about $3, the oxi clean is about $7 depending on the size of the container, the ones iv seen where I live are $13, the zote soap are about $1-2. The scents people either have on hand or have to buy, the oils range from $6-13 depending on where u get it. So id estimate, max would be $20 minimum, $12.

This is exactly what I have been needing in my life! I have always used powder while my kids were growing up and recently switched to the pods since it seems like the detergent was going quicker than when only I was doing the laundry! The only thing I am gonna do a bit different if possible, is leave a container of dry mixture for small load or when I am in a rut and need to do a garment or 2 in a quick 15 minute load.. Thank you for makimg this video!

For a reliable spray bottle to keep on hand, I buy the professional spray bottles at Lowes. I clean alot with a bleach mixture and these bottles hold up to that and store for quite a long time before I start having troubles. I always buy 3 or 4 at a time and store the extras.

if you was to cover the whole ice cube mold with the powder scrap of the excess use your 2nd ice cube tray on top of the filled try and push down like a press brush off excess back in to the bowl do the same with the next try to fill but use the 1st try you filled as the press. it might save you a bit of time and mess. hope this helps. x

I use fabuloso for my binder. I saturate the powder mix, and add more powders until it is almost putty. After a day of dry time, I freeze them to get them out of the ice cube trays whole, without any crumbling corners. Aging them makes them very hard, and they don't resolve as easy.

Just an FYI. I made my own laundry soap for years. This is laundry soap- not laundry detergent. There is a big difference in the two, laundry soap (like any other soap) will build up. Think of your shower after a week of showers. It will build up on your clothes, in your machine, and eventually in the pipes of the machine and ruin it. There is nothing in the homeade recipes to break down the soap- it will build up on your clothes and ruin your machine. I lost my first washing machine to diy laundry soap. After a few years of using this, the first time I washed my clothes in real detergent (store bought) my water was like mud. I think it's a great idea to diy things- but laundry soap was not made for washing machines. It was made for handwashing (with a washboard) that's why years ago people didn't have issues the washboard and the way they washed was able to get rid of the soap. Washing machines can't do this! Your clothes and your machine are better off with the least expensive store detergent bc that has surfactants in it that will get rid of the buildup

Kelbel Marley commercial bars of soap to wash your body with are not called soap. I don’t know if you ever noticed that or not. The FDA defines soap as: Lye + oils (fats) = soap + glycerin. Commercial soaps have all the glycerin removed. And they add detergents/surfactants to increase bubbly lather. So you’re also not putting soap in your tub or down your drain when you bathe. You are putting detergent in your tub & down your drain and pipes.

The washing machine manufacturers all have instructions to clean your washing machine periodically with an approved cleaner.

Kelbel Marley exactly! This isn’t laundry detergent. It’s laundry soap. And like you said, there’s a big difference in the two. You cannot make laundry detergent at home

What if you did an empty cycle with vinegar to clean it out from time to time ,,,, I also think that for people who use a lot of products with the savings you could buy another machine !!! here I pay 6.5 euros for 1.9 litres so about 3.5 euros ( 4 dollars) a litre.

Zote May be bigger but it’s less condensed or concentrated so best to stick with counting it as one bar even with its bigger size. Hope that helps

I think the idea is fantastic at what you’re doing and thank you very much. I was also wondering if I use 100% vinegar instead of half and half water and vinegar with that be OK?
@bigbearhomestead

I don't think so. I think you need to cut the acidity of the vinegar with the water. Too much acidity could be bad. I also imagine it would make things too sticky.

Have you considered trying sodium alginate & water for clumping?! Coating patties with 2% sodium alginate with preservatives improved the overall appearance, colour, juiciness, flavour, texture so I’m sure it would preserve your tablets extremely well too!!

Good straightforward video. Two things... 1) forming pods sounds a lot like forming bath fizzies. i think some use a meatballer to grasp and squeeze, then release and set to dry. Very fast and neat. 2) Also - I'm very leery of using Fels Naptha, or Zote. They don't list ingredients on their labels but I've written to the company and got them - they have some pretty dubious ingredients (carcinogenic). So... definitely use gloves grating it, but... as a soap maker, can handmade soap work? It will contain glycerine. Maybe like a castile soap? I have a lot of soap scraps, but i am wondering what that might do as far as causing scum buildup in the machine. Thanks.

The NAFTA Bar is smaller because it’s more concentrated it’s actually a lash soap where the result is just basically a step above bathroom soap it just has a little more cleaning agent to add to it but each bar has the same amount of cleaning so you don’t just use half a bar use the whole bar

Fels-naptha is a pretreatment laundry soap. Lately, it's been harder to find, so we swapped over to using our own soap. We will be using Castile soap in the future because it has great cleansing power.

Thanks for that suggestion. The other thing we are doing is mixing all the dry ingredients together in a tupperware with a nylon stocking with rice in it to absorb the moisture. When we are ready to make pods, we add the liquid and pack tightly into the ice cube trays.

really love how you are making the pods but wondering if the wetting of the powder to help set the pods is activating the oxi clean which then will make it ineffective when you use the pods in the laundry?

I've watched other people make liquid detergent that they then add gallons and gallons of water to after they cook down and melt the soaps in water. After they water it all down it still gets kind of gelatinous. I'm wondering if you cooked down the soaps in water and then poured the mixture into cubes without adding all of the extra water if that would work too?
