For those of you who don't have a blender or simply don't want to use it for laundry detergent, you can cut the bar of soap into squares as he did and microwave them. Put them on for 2 minutes and if they need additional heating, go up in 30 second increments. The soap will puff up like a fluffy marshmallow. Allow it to cool for 30 mins and then you can just squeeze it into a powder with your hands. It will be that fine consistency that most are looking for. A ziploc bag helps the crushing but it's not necessary.

Good job telling how many loads per including the different ones for high efficiency. I have been doing this for a year and a half or two years. We got a new washer, which may be high efficiency. I’m going to try using less. I’ve been using 2 tablespoons, or 3 for really grimy stuff. No sense not checking it out! Thank you.

I have seen them use one bar of pink Zote soap instead of three fels napth they say the Zote has a natural brightener. I have personally never used it. I know fels naptha is a good stain remover.

Sunlight bar soap would be great too. Wonder if mix would go rancid before it is all used. Keep the bucket in a cool space like the basement and bring up smaller amounts especially in hot weather.

Awesome idea to use the blender and mix in the oxy-powder. You could do that with Zote instead of shredding it. I hate grating! I think it takes me back to having to grate cheese as a child! Haha!!!

TiffanysTouch Baking soda isn’t another water softener. It doesn’t react fast enough with hard water contaminants-as do washing soda and borax-to be effective. He uses an xs of borax and washing soda. Baking soda, as used here, is just a filler and should be omitted. Oxyclean is mostly washing soda. You don’t need nearly as much of these powders as he uses, given the amount of soap involved. His recipe just dilutes the concentration of soap per dose, reducing cleaning effectiveness.

@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt Thank you for posting this link. I wish everybody would take time to read it. I made a 5-gallon bucket full of this homemade stuff. After just 2-3 loads of laundry, I poured it all out. This article explained to me why it DID NOT WORK! I went back to my store-bought "detergent" and I add a little washing soda to each load. And I don't even have to use fabric softener any more. This homemade stuff may be "cheap"......but they'll get what they pay for....smh 😉

This is not a detergent. The only surfactant is bar soap. Detergents and soaps are different chemically. Why two different water softeners? Don’t know? Didn’t think you did... No chemicals? All natural? Oh my, oh my. Everything there’s a chemical, including dreaded industrial chemicals. Oxyclean is full of hydrogen peroxide...a powerful oxidant for rocket fuel. Oxyclean decomposes in the presence of moisture. That’s why it’s sold in a sealed plastic container. It’s supposed to be kept dry and added to the wash separately. Depending on how long it’s stored in any open container and the humidity, you could end up with no bleaching ability. $$$ wasted!!!

@FrankGutowski-ls8jt
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt 6 жыл бұрын
Jason Smith Not sure what you’re referring to. Possibly related to recommendation to avoid exposing Oxyclean to moisture before use? My point was that soaps and detergents are different. The former have a tendency to form deposits in hard water, which complicates getting fabrics clean. These are facts, not opinions. Avoidance of chemicals if often cited as a reason for DIY laundry soaps. Penny pinching is another. Distrust of science and dislike of big corporations are important to others, something I think of as an expression of anger at the world. Your comment suggests you’re not someone who places much value on education or on moving beyond your limited level of understanding.
