When they recognise the person, they "snap out " of it. That's why having them as "pets" is dangerous. What people don't understand is it's pure instinct. Even if a cat sees you as a friend, it will be compelled to sneak up on you if your back is turned. They do this in both hunting and play. The problem is that big cats are powerful enough to seriously hurt you just from playing. Even domestic cats can hurt you if they are not taught to play with sheathed claws and not bite. We have thinner, more fragile skin, and they don't instantly understand that we can be hurt easily by them through play.

It looks to me like their stalking is mostly playful. They know he's not food, but the hunting instinct is triggered when he turns his back, so they want to go for him. I suspect that if they really tried to catch him, they would be a lot more forceful (and also try to be sneakier). Still, it's a powerful display and a good reminder that big cats don't make good pets.

Last day I worked in a forest near creek. I had to fix smth small(wire) quickly as I there was cattle nearby. Also, the neighbouring farm has a guard-dog which is set loose time to time to piss off strangers. It ads up and I had a chance of experiencing "blunt quick look around" after 20 minutes of concentrated work in a environment that is surrounded with MOVING NATURAL GREEN COLOUR.

Out in the wilds they would hide in tall grass and their camouflage might do the trick but on a flat surface their instincts don't do them a favor. Housecats got the same instinct, you don't have to take a risk beeing mauled by them though.

Actually, that's exactly how they think. These animals are highly dependent on their ability to remain unseen by their prey until it's too late. They trust their natural camouflage and hence think that by standing still you will not see them. As soon as you turn and face them, they hesitate and stop again in hopes that you don't spot them. It's all natural instinct.

My mother, who worked with big cats when I was younger, drilled this into me as a kid every day. Never turn your back on them, never take your eyes off them, and never run from them. Unfortunately, people seem to think that just because they're in zoos, or "domesticated" that means they're harmless.

This is a common hunting technique used by big cats actually. Many natives of Asia and Africa where many of these species are found, often wear masks with faces on them behind their heads to give the illusion of their backs NOT being turned. The reason big cats wait for your back to be turned is because they have a clearer shot to your neck to kill you quickly. Not only can they crush the windpipe but they also severe the brain cord.
