The common problem with these units is that everyone leaves them in their vehicle 24/7 including during the summer heat. The extreme temperature in a hot vehicle will always cause a battery to swell up. I have a different brand jump starter that I store in my vehicle and noticed that the battery also swelled up after a couple years.

@bigclivedotcom7 жыл бұрын
I've added a list of the main components in the unit. It is quite complex. The optocoupler-like devices are indeed Cosmo 1010 optocouplers. The battery balancing is dealt with by an 8254AA chip with 4435 MOSFETs. The LEDs are driven by an Xn2115tp device. The main processor is a Holtek HT46R06. The USB output is powered by an MP1584 buck regulator. The USB charging input is boosted up by an FP6293. There's a GZ423 (maybe a dual op amp?) and a 3.3V regulator.

You know, I've played with load baring semi conductors in parallel before. What can happen is, if they aren't all perfectly matched, and there are subtle differences in their impedance in operation, it causes current to flow unevenly across each component. The lower impedance component passes more current and gets over loaded. Then shit runs away and fails.
@wingerrrrrrrrr4 жыл бұрын
Nice thing about Mosfets is that they lend themselves to that though, because they start limiting as they overheat rather than run away, so it tends to self balance in parallel.

I have one of these units and it does have protection but if you have a complete dead battery, you can put it in in some sort of Manual mode where it allows the full current and circumvents the "brains" that detect if low battery is connected.
@salamander57032 жыл бұрын
The electronics check if you have connected the pack the right way round and won't let it give power until it sees the vehicle battery. If the vehicle battery is so completely dead the pack doesn't detect it you can press the override button and then it gets power - you have to check you connected it right way round!!

Having worked with model helicopters in the past, it totally scares me to know they're putting this kind of battery pack inside consumer electronics in such a way that makes them impossible to visually inspect for damage. This was 4 years ago and that noco in particular as he said is an unknown year but noco puts a lot of protection in their starters back when you made this comment they had thermal sensors inside the battery as you saw and multiple other protections but when a starter is outside in a car they will get HOT and seince there isn't a way for them to cool the battery they often end up puffing up from the heat ruining the pack new ones have sensors to not let the pack be used if this ends up being the case where as this older model in the video doesn't have said protection and was still able to preform basic functions in the current model if it determines that the pack has puffed up it will charge to 50% and die or if it's above 50% it won't start a car and will let you charge your phone until it hits 50% which is the most stable percentage for a lipo cell battery

I'm wondering if it is generally a bad design to have mosfets in parallel. Typically one fet can handle a current spike at least twice its rating for continuous current, for some number of milliseconds. Maybe if only one turned on, and the other(s) had a longer than expected delay, it could cause a cascading fet failure. Is that likely to happen?

I'd be interested in seeing a tear down of one of the new "batteryless" jump packs (e.g., Autowit) which use the dead car battery as the source of power to start the car. I assume there is some sort of jewel thief circuit to extract energy from the battery which then charges a supercap which provides the boost to start the car. The obvious advantage is there is no battery in the jump pack which has to be charged in advance. Seems like a bit of technical magic.
@spelunkerd4 жыл бұрын

It cranked the engine over with ease. I have had other cheap models that wouldn't even start my car, and actually went up in smoke. Scary feeling. AND YES I DID WANT TO SEE YOU SHORT IT OUT. Cheers!

I have one of these and it sucks. Every time I try to boost something the battery overheats and it shuts down.
@generichumanoid29815 жыл бұрын
I have the GB40 and when I press the exclamation mark button to give the car battery a boost, upon turning the key to start the engine, the GB40 shuts off. But then when I turn on the unit, the green light indicates it is still fully charged. What could the problem be? Can You help me modify it to serve as a battery booster jumper and not have to go through all the fancy protection that cause it to shut off? Thanks Clive!

These are premium packaging only. Check out the Project Farm channel's test of jump starters. This one failed pretty badly. Not the worst, but not great.

can we replace the lipo pouch battery with 18650 cells in series x 2 parrels? asking for a friend
@bigclivedotcom4 жыл бұрын
It has to be a very high current pack. Ordinary 18650's would probably be damaged.

Got got one of these from Amazon.ca. It was pretty much the same case as this. The flashlight and power bank functions worked but it wasn't even able to start my lawn tractor. Absolute junk. I returned it.

so this is a lithium battery car jump starter? is it one that you plug into the cigarette lighter and jump it?or does it come with leads that connect to the car battery?
@bigclivedotcom6 жыл бұрын
This version comes with a set of plug-in car battery clips.

These Noco are short and reverse polarity protected so you didn't have to worry about leads touching together I own one and like it alot !

Outside of the device, yes there's protections if not enabling force mode, but when he opened it, there were two battery leads that were bare and not knowing of the switches malfunctioned in the on or off position, better to be safe than sorry 😬

Yes, we do want you to do it. Each time you say "let's cover it to avoid explosion" my excitement level goes down.

Did you say he was using it as a power bank? Those high discharge cell may not have as many charge cycles as most other lipos
@TheShivABC7 жыл бұрын
They would be related to the hobby rc market where high discharge is required, after charge cycle life for these types of cells are around 500-1200 charges
@TheShivABC7 жыл бұрын
but being the cheap china variety in reality they may only be good for 10 cycles lol
@davidreynolds46844 жыл бұрын
Does that unit not have reverse polarity protection? Or maybe someone cranked on it too much for too long. Several ive dealt with say not to jump without letting it sit a min and dont do it more than 3 times.
@JasonMasters6 жыл бұрын
I'm going to guess that what happened to that battery pack is that someone tried to start a car which was reluctant to fire up and they kept the ignition turned to "start" for too long, overloading the battery and the switching circuitry. Those cells can start a car, but they can only supply that amount of current for around 3-5 seconds before overheating. Either that or someone deliberately shorted it out just to see what things they could melt with the heavy current. But if the pack had any protection circuitry, that must have failed too.

I have been using a number of these units for a few years now. No problems so far. It is important to not try to use an undersized one for the type of vehicle.

I some time ago I started wondering about EU/UK/US/... wall sockets and they're plugs. I would prefer UK plugs over all of them, mainly b/c the N/L reverse "protection", fuse etc. I'd like to know your opinion about this.
@bigclivedotcom7 жыл бұрын
If I could choose a plug from all the worlds styles it would still be the UK one for its robustness and fuse for local flex protection.

It seems that no amount of smart/clever circuitry can stop those type of devices popping there clogs. I've seen no end of automatic "smart" chargers become useless over a short time, they just don't cut the mustard.

How do you safely dispose of a Li-ion power pack? I don't think I would want to toss it in the land fill.
@bigclivedotcom7 жыл бұрын
They contain very little lithium (trace amounts). The main hazard is the amount of energy it holds when charged, so if you discharge it completely it's fairly safe.

My issue is this, I plug in to charge it and it only blinks at 25% it doesnt move up to 100% and I have 2 of GB70s and both are doing it. I turn on the flashlight and all functions work...any thoughts?

*Clive I don't know if this is out of the range of things you'd pay money for, but I would really love if you tested one of those "Pocket sockets" that are basically a hand crank generators with a 120V output.*

I see the ones that you crank for a 5v usb output, but not one for 120v. Seems pretty sketchy if it does exist. Have a link for one?

My GB70 battery swelled up so much it split the case apart. It was about 3 years old, but had only been used a few times. Charged it about every 3 months. Last time it would not charge, so I left it on longer. A day later it lined like a bloated tick.
