I firmly believe that Udina should have been redeemed in Mass Effect 3. Instead of betraying the Council, he should have sacrificed himself to stop the Coup attempt. I was so happy that he showed some emotion and sorrow at the start of ME3, and I was so mad that they wrote him to betray the Council.

This so much! He is so one note as it is. We hear that he's an excellent politician who would do anything for humanity, but it makes no sense that in the aftermath of Earth he'd side with Cerberus. Even if he had Cerberus ties up until that point, seeing the destruction they caused, and knowing what they'd been turning their soilders into he most likely would have noped out before the coup

What ticked me off about Jacob was not that he's a bland character, or that he hooks up with someone else by the time of ME3 .. but the go he had at Thane for being an assassin = "just a precise mercenary with no loyalty" (or smth along those lines). Meanwhile .. Jacob, a soldier, broke his loyalty to the alliance because they didn't do things his way, only to become a mercenary for Cerberus / TIM, whom according to his own words, he doesn't trust - so there's no new loyalty here either. I was like, dude, you're such a hypocrite. I hate hypocrites. And from that moment I just couldn't stand being around Jacob.
@TwinPeaksIndustries
@TwinPeaksIndustries Жыл бұрын
On one hand, Jacob does have a point. A merc is someone who takes money to fight someone else's fight. An assassin is someone who takes money for stealthily someone elses enemy, so there is at least some overlap. On the other hand, as a member of Cerberus and a fighter, Jacob is little more than a merc himself.

The difference between Kai Leng and Udina is that i genuinly dislike Udina, Kai Leng feels more like an annoying clown you cant do anything about cause "plot armor". The fight at the asari temple is the single one moment i despise in the entire trilogy. Speaking of Asari, the Asari counciler can eff it too XD she sat on the solution all this time and let shepard run around like a fool, the entire invasion might have had a much easier ending (if happening at all) if what the Asari knew was revealed.

I feel the same way about Traynor. She has a ridiculous personality, a blob of cutesy nerdy ideas. She's like a sitcom; her idea of romance is a cyborg's voice makes her hot and she wants it, and it makes her jealous of Joker. Worse, she replaces Kelly Chambers, a deeply interesting tragic character. There was huge potential to develop Kelly further, but they bumped her for a cringy, fantasy dork who feels like the devs wanted something more shallow and diverse, as if people get tired and bored of RPGs and need a rest.

I liked that ME2 managed some nuance with Gerrel and Koris. One is likeable and approachable, but it's clear his beliefs probably aren't the best for the Quarians, while the other comes across as slimy and underhanded, but you can tell he's probably right in the grand scheme of things. And then ME3 decided that nuance was for losers.

I don't hate Leng. I hate the hack writer who in an attempt to glorify their GMPC Gary Stu pet villain gave him unlimited plot armor and gave Shepard and co. a chronic case of cutscene incompetence whenever he's on screen. Because of this, when I finally did kill him, it didn't feel like an accomplishment. It felt like the writer was allowing me to kill him by taking away his plot armor. Kai Leng was not put in this game to serve the needs of the story, he was put in this game to gratify the writer. If it weren't for Hologram Kid, Leng would be the worst part of ME3.

Other Main issue with Kai Lang is that you are expected to read the novels to fully understand the character, if you go in without reading the books you have no idea who he is and why he should be seen as a threat. I mean, it would be cool in he was introduced in or replaced by a character from previous games, but he'd work even just as a new character for ME3 if he actually made sense. On the one hand, he's ex-N7 and pretty clearly being framed as a supersoldier on par with Shepard, but on the other, he's a space ninja who brings a sword to a gunfight and dresses like discount Nightwing. Either of those concepts could work for a villian, but not together. If he's meant to be an evil Shepard, then drop the sword and ninja aesthetic, and make him a tactical fighter whose boss fights play out like, well, the evil Shepard clone from the Citadel. They should be super hard, the kind that the player is meant to lose the first time around, but not completely unwinnable. If you do win, there should be a special cutscene of him still accomplishing his objective, but making a much narrower escape. This would make him feel like a proper threat that can actually go toe to toe with Shepard to the players that legitimately lose to him, while still giving a sense of satisfaction to the few who do manage to beat him. If you wanna go the space ninja route, on the other hand, that's fine (If a bit edgy), but he should never fight Shepard directly until he's forced to at Cerberus HQ. For instance, on the Citadel, as you try to get to the Salarian Councilor, he should always be one step ahead of you, leaving dead C-Sec officers and STG commandos in his wake for you to find, and you arrive just in time to see him kill Thane, Kirrahe, or Valern. On Thessia, he should just show up, deliver the Illusive Man's message, and once the conversation is over, have it be revealed that the Kai Leng standing there was just a decoy like EDI's, and he's actually been cloaked, stealing the Prothean data the whole time. By the time he reveals himself, he's already halfway to the exit, and orders the gunship to bring down the temple on top of you, no boss fight involved. He doesn't need to be a super deep character or have a personal connection to Shepard to be an effective villain, he just needs to be properly intimidating, feel like a proper part of the universe rather than an edgy self-insert, and most importantly, when he beats Shepard, make the player feel like they lost to him rather than to the cutscene.

I was expecting Diana Allers to make the list. She replaced Emily Wong, a minor, but interesting character in the prior two games, who had some appearances in the outer media too, showing she had a presence, and was setup to be one of the better reporter types, a counter to the one mentioned in the list. However, in order to make the game more appealing to critics EA decided, in their infinite stupid, that this game, like a few others had done, would need to have a character voiced by a game reviewer, to make the reviewers less likely to trash it, lest they inadvertently anger their friend who was part of the project. BTW, that is NOT speculation, EA's memos leaked a while back, and they admitted in their that each game needed it, as they had good luck with it. Whether that had an effect on Mass Effect 3's...interesting reception Critic Vs. Player is anyone's guess, but hey, it probably didn't hurt the first side of that one. Anyway, we got Diana, and Emily was killed via a twitter thread. It wasn't a terrible one, BTW. If you never read it(I think it's gone now, and I couldn't find the archive), basically it gives a first person viewpoint on the Reapers taking a world, and then, at the end, Emily, knowing she's going to die, climbs into the news vehicle and gives one last report. 'Okay you monsters, you wanna know about humans!? Well here's how we die! At RAMMING SPEED!!!' It's pretty badass..it does not make up for how dirty she was done.

One of the things to note about Koris you have to do a paragon check to save his life after his ship goes down. He BEGS Shepherd to save his people over himself.

The Batarian hated the most: The bartender who tries to kill Shep. Honorable mention should be whatever her name is who is a reporter who travels with you in ME3. They NEVER should have created the character and used Emily Wong instead. Or hell, even the hated reporter.

There is a mod to replace the reporter in ME with Emily Wong. Sadly they weren't able to change the voice, just the appearance. but still. I'm going to use it in my next playthru.

@@davidsharpe1611 I know that mod exists, but it doesn't change the fact that either of the original reporters tagging along (the one we love, or the one we love to hate) would have made for a MUCH more interesting story. I'm still waiting for an update of the mod (by someone else, original creator said bo), that puts the squadmate you sacrificed on Virmire into Kai Lang's role. A MUCH better concept than this rando if you ask me.

I actually came to like Khalisa, especially after she let herself be seen in ME3, and not just be another sensationalist segment for personal gain in the face of total annihilation. She genuinely cares about Earth, its people, and is holding out hope that Shepard can do something about it. I always reassure her when I can, and never punch her.

Great video! Excellent pick to NOT include Dr. Archer. Although an "evil" character he was very well written and certainly not disliked in a "oh they aren't well written" way.

It's kinda funny that Han'Gerrel was a lot nicer to Shepard than Zaal'Koris in ME2, only for it to be the other way around in ME3 I always make Anderson councilor, except a couple of times I just wanted to see what happens otherwise, a bit sad Anderson stepped down with Udina named as his successor I wasn't the biggest fan of Diana Allers, especially since they killed off Commander Bastila Shepard's established favorite reporter Emily Wong offscreen. Got a mod called Emily Returns, replaces Allers with Wong, although the voice is still Jessica Chobot (just pretend it's like Batman Arkham Knight where Mass Effect's Kimberly Brooks was replaced as Oracle with somebody named Ashley Greene 😥). I'd even take Khalisah Bint al-Jilani on the Normandy, imagine the romance there 👊 lol 😝

It's unfortunate Bioware made that decision not matter. Would've been interesting if the decision actually changed parts of the story like Anderson staying on the Citadel if a councilor and thus no one is able to lead the resistance on Earth as a consequence.

After many play throughs, I finally think I understand Jacob. He’s not a bad guy, despite cheating on FemShep. It’s just that he sees himself as the main character instead of one of Shepard’s sidekicks. Note his quick honesty with Shepard in the beginning, his bragging about being a Corsair, his volunteering to handle the ducts, and his rescuing the Cerberus scientists. He’s clearly brave and selfless, but also seems to want more recognition of that. He seems to chafe at Shepard’s efforts to chat him up and be buddies. That’s realistic. I mean,there are people like that, of course, and that doesn’t make them bad people. But writing a crew member like that in the game without some opportunity to really bond with or otherwise appreciate him was unfortunate.

I guess i played more paragon sheps ‘cause I’d put Archer, Starchild, ME3 illusive man, the salarian dalatrass, Wreav and Kai Lang a second time over the reporter and Gerrel (him because he seemed a lot better of a character in ME2).

Journalist Al Jilani doesn't have to be a gotcha journalist in any of the ME series. If you are paragon enough for every interaction every interview either ends with her responding positively or acknowledging that Shepard out played her. Anyone who resorts to punching a journalist has just admitted they badly screwed up the interview.

I'm shocked nobody thought of Joker. He ON PURPOSE flew Shepherd into the Collector ship, getting him killed in ME2, was responsible for getting the entire crew taken by the Collectors, and wanted to bang EDI throughout ME3. He almost single-handedly destroyed Kevduit's psychopath, Ten Piece Nugg-Shepherd.

Not the biggest fan of Jacob either, but to say he's TOTALLY useless is a little unfair, when you only have him and Miranda for squadies, they compliment each other almost perfectly. Also I tend to put Jacob in charge of the second fire team when you need to clear the seekers, and he's never let me down
