with those two headless bolts out why not grrind a slot in each one afterwards so you can just use a flat head screw driver if it happens again !!!

@@EpicGamingEct Because you make a mess grinding stuff inside the car and those are security bolts. The head shears off to keep people (thieves) from easily removing the ignition/steering lock. If you want someone to defeat the lock with common tools in the future, you might as well use common bolts from the hardware store instead of the supplied shear bolts - no mess from grinding and easier to use a ratchet and socket than a flat head screwdriver.

@@killer2600 no Epic is saying with the bolts out of the vehicle then grind a slot for replacement. I may try that but have some new spec bolts on order too. I have seen that suggestion on the Ridgeline forum too.

I am working on a 2008 Ridgeline here in 2024. My Ridgeline steering column may be a bit more complicated but this gives me hope. This is the most thoro video I have found - especially about how to get to and remove the housing. I live in very remote Alaska - no Honda dealers not lock smiths. I hope to remove the whole housing and take it to a locksmith to rebuild using a good original key. I'll have to trash the worn key. But you explained both options - very very good thank you.

Thanks. It was two weeks between disassembly, re-keying and re-addembly for me. Your clear information about two "wood-type screws at the top and one machine screw at the bottom" for the steering column cowling cover was very helpful as it's dark and cramped in the foot well. I filed the catching pawl off the sticking wafer and left it in the lock non-functionally so that I didn't lose it for possible re-furbishment later (hopefully avoiding having to re-key the locks). Thanks again.

Excellent video. I did a honda Fit 2016 model. The two break off bolts are REVERSE thread on the honda 2016 Fit model. I used a chisel and hammer for many hours and they would not turn because i was chiseling them counter clockwise. I realized this after drilling them out. Had i known that they are reverse thread i wouldn't of drilled them out and had to purchase 2 more bolts off ebay etc Good video. If i was to do it again i would find the compressed pin and remove it only and replace just the key area. I couldnt find the pin as it was different from all the videos being a 2016 Honda Fit and ended up doing it the hardest way. I found the removal pin location after the whole unit was removed.

It took some work but he was able to re break the cylinder and my original key worked again. It was only $100 dollars to make a copy of the key and for his time. Well worth it. You can bypass having to program the new key by using your old kill switch. You have to take the chip out off your old key and tape it to the side of the new key. Then you can drive to the Honda shop (instead of getting towed) to get the key programed.

The best time to fix your Honda (or any other brand) ignition is the moment it starts acting up/requires jiggling or playing with it to get it to turn. It's cheaper if you fix it early, if the key still can be made to work and turn often a locksmith can repair/replace the lock cylinder for not a lot of money. If your key being worn is part of the problem, as it often is on Hondas, a locksmith can cut a new key to factory specs and program it to the vehicle. The cost of a locksmith doing this on a lock that is just starting to fail but hasn't completely become inoperable is cheaper than the purchase price of this complete Honda ignition assembly and you won't be stuck with two keys for one car.

My civic is currently stuck in a parking lot with same problem and I'm trying to at least get the steering unlocked.. Was this procedure done with steering unlocked already via using that other key the way you did to get it going and in the garage? I guess my question is will I still be able to get it off if steering is locked? I have no access to another same gen honda key. Before when it started getting jammed, the hard part was turning it enough to get the steering unlocked then key turned fine between off/1/2 (or like off 90% off- i wasnt quite pulling it all the way back but enough to cut power to radio etc). If I take the assy off, and depress the steering lock "button" that slides up, I am hoping to be able to turn the key forward again. I wouldnt even mind blocking that button somehow so the steering never locks again ( until I get it fixed properly but I am just trying to get going for now.. )

After all that work & planning….my question to you is this….”Why would you want to sheer those 8mm bolt heads off !??? I’d want to leave them intact for any future access and/or removal needs ! Especially on a Honda, where ignition issues are plentiful ! There’s no logical reason, that I can quickly think of, as to why you would want to sheer those bolt-heads off. making any future access that much more difficult & time consuming. Maybe there is a good reason to sheer them off & Im just not on that page. I know that if that car was either mine or someone else’s who I knew, they’d remain intact in case they need to be removed again. Other than that, great video. My issue w/my girlfriends 07 Civic is that the key was original & completely worn out so it wouldn’t turn the ignition. That was 2-years ago. At that time I replaced the tumblers & barrel & corrected the fault. Of course in hindsight, I should have replaced the key then too, but I didn’t because I was trying to save a few $. So , fast forward 2-years to current date (06.02.23) The original OEM key was getting stuck in the new tumblers because the old key prematurely wore out the new tumblers. So, I just replaced the tumblers w/all new & recut a new key to match the OEM key & new tumblers in ignition-barrel. And for some odd reason the very middle of the Ignition lock housing (that contains the steering-wheel lock tab itself) has locked itself & WILL NOT TURN, even w/the ignition switch removed & w/the new ignition tumbler-barrel completely removed as well (Including the immobilizer rings of course, that are still have plugged in & receiving power & signal, and they’re just hanging from their own harnesses) So the steering-wheel lock is STILL engaged w/the steering-column & not allowing me to turn the steering-wheel obviously, but is also not allowing me to turn or rotate the very middle section, that’s inside the center of the ignition housing ! The “Guts” inside that housing (That receives the male end of the tumbler-barrel) are stuck in one position, and that’s in the LOCK position !!! WTF !?!? What gives !?????? It was just working freely & flawlessly just before I replaced the tumblers & barrel & just removed the ignition-switch on the opposite end of the ignition-housing to eliminate the possibility that the switch was stuck in the LOCK position ! VERY CONFUSING & FRUSTRATING ! Has the ignition housing (That’s bolted to the steering-column w/those sheer-bolts) & the steering-wheel lock tab failed suddenly !??? Is staying in the LOCK position the trademark symptom of the ignition-housing failing !??? Remember, the ignition tumbler-barrel section is completely removed from the ignition-housing that’s bolted to the steering-column by those sheer-bolts. And at the opposite end, the ignition-switch is removed ! So the ONLY parts remaining intact inside that ignition-housing is that short center section that rotates (When fully assembled w/key in ignition) when you turn the key, which turns the ignition-switch & also turning the steering-column LOCK-TAB up into the bottom of the steering-column when in the “LOCK” position ! This section WILL NOT UNLOCK OR TURN by hand or screwdriver and/or needle nose !!!!! What’s stopping it from freely turning now that both ends, the tumbler-barrel (Where the key fits into) and the ignition-switch is also removed at the opposite end ! Aaaaaahhhhhhh !!!!🤨🤔🫣🤪

I am not aware of being able to rent a scan tool capable of programming these or programming beforehand. Another (cheaper) option is take lock assembly out and have a locksmith fix the lock cylinder. My 1999 civic has the same issue. But I finally got the key to turn and the car won’t crank. It’s not the battery. Also it’s kind of hard to get the key to turn back to get it out. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking, what if you had replaced the Immobilizer PCB in the old assembly and put it the new assembly

How much would it cost to get it done if your not mechanically inclined

Hi this is a great video but im a little new what does it mean to seer off when your putting those bolts back in thanks in advance for your response

The bolt heads shear off when you tighten them to prevent them from being easily removed (anti-theft).

Before performing this procedure, Make sure your key is not worn if so get a new key, or a copy of the key you have, and check to see if that works.

Please send me all the ones you remove remove and throw away because I can fix them and rekry them . And you could harvest the chip out of the old key and put it inside the immobilizer ring and then tuck it away under the dash . Put the other new immobilizer around the switch for cosmetic reasons and put it all back togather. Only one tiny bent tumbler causing that switch not to turn because of a bent key. A pinning kit cost $120.

Looking at getting my car fixed by replacing the assembly like in the video, is it possible instead to have a smith just repair it to avoid having to reprogram it and buy a roughly $400 assembly?
@BigDog500015 жыл бұрын
@@_No__1 Yes, I mentioned that is an option near the end of the video.

Mike - Just curious, why not put the old immobilizer with the old chip around the switch, and get rid of the new one? Will that not work?
