Hobbs is my English Mastiff puppy 18 months. Breakfast is a Frozen Game Hen. Pound of Frozen stewing meat. Lunch another frozen game hen. He always has high end dry available. Dinner is Low quality frozen Salmon and refill dry. It’s about 22.00 a day. He had coat issues until I added the salmon. Now? Absolutely beautiful Dog. He’s 215 pounds, looks like a lion! No fat on him..

So much food for a great price! Amazing! Not sure what a co-op is. Was thinking of going to a butcher or pre-made from a site, but that's really $$$. Thinking of going RAW but it's $$$ for our 3 large dogs...shepherds. Maybe I'll just use raw as a topper? Right now we use kibble and cook for toppers.

Thank you! Great question. It was pretty quick. When I first transitioned them years ago, it was a cold turkey switch. Some dogs do ok with that, others not as much. This time I had a little kibble left over, so we did morning kibble and dinner raw for a few days. 😊

So you start with small bones that your dog can easily chew through that wont get stuck in their throat and you watch them. I started my puppy off with a drumstick and cut the bone in half and just watched him his first couple times.

The beef cheek comes from the facial muscle of the cow. Throughout its life, the cow is constantly working its cheek through chewing food, and consequently the meat is tough. Once cooked correctly, all the connective tissue becomes tender and melts in the mouth.

And there to many infomercials that it can be a bit confusing. Went to a local butcher shop grabbed a few things.a little pricey and didn't have a lot to choose from. Realy new to this a little nervous.Should I cut stuff up before I give it to them? After watching your video I feel a little under prepared.

My male is 1 year old and weighs 130 but will more than likely end up 170 lbs. I really want to switch to raw obviously for health reasons. How much does your monthly supply cost? Thank you so much! That is an interesting question... I would say we do, though I would fall into a 30/30/40 diet of protein/fat/carb. 😊 It's the same idea. Feeding a dog a diet of processed kibble (sugar) would be like me going from 30/30/40 to 100% carb. There is probably a better example, but that was the first thing that popped into my mind.

@BigDogMom
@BigDogMom Жыл бұрын
Fantastic! It does sometimes take some digging to find a good co-op that offers decent prices for bulk raw. I found this one that looks promising, though I don't know how far it will be for you. Usually pick ups are monthly, so even a little bit of a drive isn't an issue for most people. facebook.com/groups/PANJrawfeedingnetwork/ If this doesn't work, there are suppliers that do supply nationally. The issue with these is the cost since they will be shipping on dry ice which can be extremely expensive. It's much better if we can find you a local supplier for sure! I may do a video all about finding suppliers - I get this question a lot. 😊

@ES11777
@ES11777 Жыл бұрын
They absolutely can. That’s why it’s recommended to only give raw meat that has been in the freezer (for a time that’s specific to they type of meat, e.g meat from wild game will have to be freezed longer than meat from farmed animals) to kill the bacteria and parasites. And make sure the meat is unfreezed and at a room temp before giving to your dog

@BigDogMom 2 жыл бұрын
I can definitely understand why you say that. I'm not going to lie - with rising meat prices, it's getting more and more difficult, but thankfully, we have been able to maintain the raw diet for both of my Mastiffs. I try to give tips on how to save money with giant dogs, but it's definitely not for everyone. It takes a lot more work for sure. It's wonderful you are adding some fresh meat for your Mastiffs. I'm trying to provide even more recipes and ideas for folks feeding kibble on how to make the most of that diet as well. Consider watching my interview on probiotics as well as the video I posted yesterday on bone broth. Both would be fantastic additions for your pups!

@BigDogMom 3 жыл бұрын
I'm so excited for you!! Here are a few options I like in terms of books. This one by Thomas Sandberg is terrific: amzn.to/3BzoLdj. While this one (amzn.to/3BvGbHX) by Lew Olson doesn't have anything specific for large and giant breed dogs, I like that she has an entire section devoted to solving health issues naturally - or at least trying to through nutrition. And lastly, this book by Keep the Tail Wagging (amzn.to/3zvyv6x) answers some of the most common questions about raw feeding. The last thing I will say is that most of what I've learned about raw feeding has been from either experience or blogs like Dog's Naturally Magazine or Perfectly Rawsome. Joining Facebook groups for raw feeding or with your local raw co-op can also help as many in those groups are learning along with you. I hope this helps!! I can't wait to see the new baby! 🥰

How do you get around the parasites in raw foods? Also how do you get around the fact that all commercial meats ate GMO grain feed with corn? I cant find any local place to buy, except Walmart. I have a commercial grinder so I can grind everything
@BigDogMom
@BigDogMom Жыл бұрын
These are great questions. Thank you! As far as parasites... I have a video and blog post coming that is going to address sanitation and infections due to raw meat. Stay tuned for that. To answer you briefly though, there is no way to "get around" them really. They are everywhere. The key with handling raw meat for humans or dogs is maintaining a clean environment and preventing cross contamination. Another key is keeping meat frozen or refrigerated until use and sanitizing dishes and bowls after use. There is much more on the topic, but that is a quick summary. As far as GMO, that's a tougher one as you don't really know what is given to the animals with certainty. I buy raw food from two different raw co-ops and a local Amish Farm (who I know doesn't use GMO grain). This is one of those things that I simply can't really control, so I don't worry too much about it.

One thing you may consider right now, whether you are feeding raw or not, is to be giving a probiotic. The one I recommend is Daily Dog. I wish there was a co op near me like this. I live in the Chicagoland area and everything I'm finding is SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE than what you have. I have a dog with allergies. He's allergic to most basic protiens in all kibble (chicken, lamb, goat, and pork). He's also allergic to sweet potato, potato, and all grains, and green peas. I litterally can't find any commercial dog food that has nothing He's allergic to. I have two dogs. Between them, I would need 129lb of food a month and everywhere I can find is over $300 a month and I just can't afford that. I am so discouraged. I dont know what to do
@BigDogMom
@BigDogMom 2 жыл бұрын
We aren't that far from you if you aren't opposed to driving a couple hours depending on where you are in Chicago. Another option is to consider joining the FB group called Raw Feeding University and posting in there that you are in the Chicago area and need to find a local raw supplier. And some other options for less expensive meat are local meat markets (I get a lot of organ through my BIL who raises cows and would otherwise be throwing the organ away) and the Amish, who sometimes will sell meat less expensively. That said, as far as the allergies go - have you tried a raw version of the proteins he's allergic to? In other words, you mentioned chicken... is that just a processed kibble chicken, or all chicken? Normally, raw is much easier for these very allergic dogs. I hope some of this helps! Please keep me posted.

In my opinion, yes, absolutely. Now, keep in mind there are some in the raw feeding community that will disagree with me. They believe no kibble should be fed and/or that you shouldn't mix the two. I just published a new video that somewhat addresses some of these differences in perspectives. I think you will like it. At the end of the day, you need to do what works best for you and your dog. It is my belief that some raw is better than none. I hope this helps!

can we get a reason why u need multiple meats? i know a few chicken only feeders with perfect packs
@BigDogMom
@BigDogMom 3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question! Between white (chicken, turkey, rabbit, quail) and red meats (beef, lamb, pork, duck, venison), there is a difference in protein and fat balance as well as the amount of water-soluble vitamins. Your red meats are going to be highest in those, however, they are often more expensive to feed. I like to feed several protein sources to ensure my dogs are getting the vitamins they need, not overdoing any one nutrient, and also to keep my costs down. I would never feed a diet of only chicken as it's one of the most inflammatory protein sources and for growing large and giant breed dogs, can wreck havoc on their growing bones and joints.

at this age you should be hand feeding your dog. since raw is new to your dog texture maybe the prime issue. hand feed the raw food semi frozen. stop giving treats or other food that's not his main diet. if you are doing a diy cut the the meats up in cubes so when its time to feed the night before put it in the fridge so by morning its semi frozen. some dogs just don't like the texture especially liver and kidney. if you are feeding raw you are feeding raw. the next thing thing you can do is grind it and feed it frozen to semi frozen. for the fruits and vegetables you need to steam the veg and puree it. with the fruits you need to puree it like a smoothie. if you are adding seeds they need to be soaked and blended as well. dogs don't have the ability to break-down plant cell walls so by doing these breaks down the plant cell wall making the nutrient absorption better.

@@TheSuperi9 he does prefer I hand him food, the organs I freeze and meat is seared. He sniffs every thing! The last time I did this I froze everything, but gave up thinking he just wasn’t eating enough. He still only eats 3-3.5lbs, not the suggested 4.5. I’m a NO treat mom so nothing in between. I do think I need to feed him later in the evening.

Add brown rice, buckwheat or sweet potato. A good quality human grade dog meat is fine and add more veg if you want, for an old dog digestive enzymes for dogs eating cooked for is a must. Moringa powder add nutrients lost in cooked meat and much more.

Question, why would a dog need pork or beef in their diet when normally, no dog in the wild would ever have beef or pork, chicken and turkey I can see, as dogs will hunt down chickens and such. But whys it a necessity to add beef to their diet when they would have never had then anyways?

I didn't... but I wonder why that would be. 🤔 One would think the bone-in portions of either beef or pork or chicken would be calculated the same.
