Followed this step by step and was able to fix some mean left drift that had made the controller worthless. Tried this, it didn't work the first time - in fact got worse, but then tried again and was more 'forceful' with the amendments to the spring mechanism on the potentiometer thing, and it worked the 2nd time for some reason and solved the stick drift completely. So has saved me £45. Quite a bit harder, and more fiddly than repairing the Switch Stick Drift, but worked in the end. Took me about 45mins - 1 hour to do it twice.

Excellent video my friend. You have pointed out all tasks where we should be gentle. At the end of a one hour operation, I have found a tiny hair smaller than eyelash at the interior surface. Post-tested for three hours, the left drift was gone. One really need to be careful about the fact that for left-right drifts, they need to open upper green lid. By the time I have understood this, I have already cleaned the interior of the other green lid. One more warning to other watchers, do not do this immediately after having an espresso. On checking the one I had drift with the small metal contact that comes out I noticed straight away there was a 1mm black mark in the metal contact near the top, not sure if it was a burn mark or a piece of trapped rubber but the Isopropyl alcohol, baby's toothbrush and wooden toothpicks removed it (closest I had to earbuds). Thanks a lot for the video! This took care of my stick drift issue. I'm not sure of the name of the part, but those white plastic bits that you pull out the potentiometer, one of mine was in pretty rough shape and the metal was bent a lot more than normal. I no longer have stick drift, but my look sensitivity is faster to the right than it is looking to the left. I bought a cheap Amazon kit that includes the potentiometers and all of the internal parts, I'm going to try replacing just the damaged white plastic piece to see if it helps. Good thing I rarely use the mic, I can use my other controllers for that functionality 😂

This fix worked perfectly but for only 1 week! I have 2 of these controllers that both had the same left stick drift (leftwards). Did this fix and was super happy with the results but just a few days later the issue started to come back little by little. Appreciative of this video but overall very disappointing as I'm now back to square 1. Not sure what to do next... even thinking about having to buy another controller makes me angry.
@JoeBleeps5 ай бұрын
I've had that happen to me too and it's very frustrating. Next steps would be to try replacing the potentiometer. Easy method first, just swapping out the white parts, and if that doesn't work, replacing the whole thing. Much cheaper than a new controller but more work involved with the second option
@hooooter5 ай бұрын
@@JoeBleeps that's exactly what I did after posting that comment. Just waiting for the parts to arrive. Dug up my old soldering kit and tools so the work shouldn't be a problem... What is a problem is having to do this to a couple well maintained controllers. For the drift to come back that quickly after cleaning means that we're dealing with very poor quality parts💩
@JoeBleeps5 ай бұрын
@@hooooter we are indeed. I'd urge you to try just swapping out the white bit first before diving in with the soldering iron. It's a much quicker job, I did one just this week and it's working perfectly now.

Love the video very useful. But mine still is drifting up. Like I can’t even move it down, I’ve cleaned it and everything. I’ve done it 5 times now thinking I had something wrong but I’ve followed step for step 😞
@JoeBleeps9 ай бұрын
That's very frustrating. It might need the stick replacing which is no fun to do. Just two things to check and please don't think I am being patronising. Are you sure you cleaned the correct stick? It's easy to get mixed up between the left and right one when it's taken apart. Also did you bend the little metal contact out a bit before reassembling? And finally did the potentiometer assembly really snap firmly shut and then move freely when you wiggled the stick afterwards?
@l3eastlyepicgaming4689 ай бұрын
Yeah it snapped close, the coils look bent enough. Now I’m thinking I have it out upside down I’m trying again right now 😕
@l3eastlyepicgaming4689 ай бұрын
So just completed the change, I had it the right side up but the coil wasn’t bent enough I guess idk. But it’s working now. I mean yesterday it was just stuck going up couldn’t even get it to look down and today it’s got a very VERY slight drift up. Which is manageable till I get a soldering kit. Appreciate. The video! 🤩

Hi there! Thanks for the guide. Quick question, my controller’s left stick was drifting towards right, but after I tinkered with it now it’s drifting towards left, way faster this time 😅 Any tips?

I've finally managed to get the potentiometers cleaned but reassembling the controller seems to be much more annoying than I thought. The left hand ribbon cable is giving me quite some trouble, since it goes in in but won't stay in.
@JoeBleeps4 ай бұрын
The ribbons can be very tricky! They've tested my patience on a few occasions
@Jorji-km1mq5 ай бұрын
Thank you man, worked like a charm. The drift is so small now that my controller barely registers it in games.
@JoeBleeps5 ай бұрын
Great to hear! If that tiny drift ends up bothering you, try swapping out the white bit with one from a new potentiometer. I did that the other day and it works perfectly.
@Himmelvakt3 ай бұрын
Not sure if my controller has stick drift, but something isn't right for sure. It will randomly input a left input, and it's really annoying especially when play GT7, and it isn't subtle at all, when it happens it's fast and powerful, turning off vibration with a few games like Apex, and Cyberpunk, didn't fix it, but remedied it a bit, since I noticed it triggered with every vibration, but didn't completely fix it.
@JoeBleeps3 ай бұрын
Not drift as such then, but still an issue with the same component. It sounds like something has got in there, causing the internal parts to touch at a certain specific point, which in turn will give a false directional reading in the same direction every time contact is made. This method should hopefully help fix it.
@Himmelvakt3 ай бұрын
@@JoeBleeps OK I followed your video step by step, annnnnnnnnnnd....... it actually worked. There was hair, and dust in the component, cleaned it out, and it works. Thank you!!!

I did basically everything in this video step by step, and now my left analogue stick won't go left at all. What did I do wrong? Have I broken the controller?
@JoeBleeps6 ай бұрын
Sometimes the damage is beyond needing a clean. The alternative is to replace the potentiometer or, more easily, just replace the white bit inside it. Give that a try and you should be okay

This almost tempts me to design some kind of plastic food wrap and seal kind of dust shield that goes over the analog sticks so nothing can get down in there in the first place.
@JoeBleeps2 ай бұрын
@@PageofLegend they just need to use better sticks in these things. It's unforgivable considering what they charge for the controllers

I made the stick drift worse the first time, it drifted left even more, and the second go I made it so it drifted to the right almost maximum. Was I not gentle enough with the metal part to the potentiometer?
@JoeBleeps3 ай бұрын
@@puppyhale167 sometimes that part just needs replacing. I had the same thing happen with an Xbox pad. You don't have to replace the whole potentiometer, just the middle bit usually does it
@aratherlargerodent4 ай бұрын
Well, I definitely did something wrong. It took me three hours to go from a controller that drifted badly left, to a controller that doesn't work 50% of the time, and moves upward the other 50%. You can't input any other directions, either. I guess that's my fault though. I didn't have a spudger so I used a paint scraper, which resulted in damage to the thing holding the stick in place. I also broke off the microphone piece, which I didn't care about, so I threw it out. The bottom right ribbon broke off, so I tossed that, too, then the bottom left ribbon also broke off, so it went in the trash as well. I'm a cautionary tale on what not to do. Great tutorial though
