How to FIX PS5 Controller Stick Drift & Moving on its own (Best Method)

Is your controller aiming moving on it's own? It's possible you are having analog stick drift on your PS5 controller. To do this, take apart your ps5 controller and remove your thumbsticks. Then clean out the sensors and remove any gunk or grease. I just used rubbing alcohol and a q tip to clean. Then place the sensor back in and reassemble your controller. This should also help your movement and when your not sprinting as well with the left stick or right stick. ...

I just tried to fix my black Dualshock 5 and one of the wires connecting to the motherboard broke in the process and I didn't even realize it. I then went for my white Dualshock 5 because it has stick drift too and I managed to not break anything and the controller works great. @@sekutyasemacska The difference is the time it takes. I've had Xbox controllers last up to 4-5 years before getting stick drift. I play casually only an hour or two a day, that shouldn't create stick drift within six months. Sony for sure has a quality issue with at least the launch controllers.

Great tutorial but please be aware to not push those two metal semicircles (see 6:45) down too much when cleaning the potentiometer with the q-tip and alcohol. If they are two close to the white plastic, they wont make contact with the graphite pad and will likely make your drift issue much worse (as it did for me). Also the two metal semicircles should ideally be right next to eachother with very little separation between the two. I used a pair of tweezers for this and once i assembled my controller, my stick drift was completely gone

It's important to note that once you pull out the little white pieces with the springs on them, you have to be very careful with the way you handle them. One rough touch against the spring before reinserting it back in the slot on the analog stick just might make your stick drift situation a whole lot worse. So yeah, basically, take your time when following this tutorial. There is no rush.

mine werent really dirty at all, its crazy cause even dirt or contamination on a non visible scale can cause drift. i had slight drift on my left analog stick and cleaning it fixed the issue. there were a few hairs tho so i wonder if those had anything to do with it. i need to do these steps on all of my switch joycons and pro controller and i am dreading it. i hope someone can invent a mechanism that makes it to where drift wont happen to controllers anymore.

Hi, this is a great tutorial and it worked for me. I would like to add two things, firstly when opening the white case of the controller, be careful because you can easily scratch it if you are not using a plastic tool(I tried using a screwdriver), and you can open the case without it, you just need to make a small opening at the bottom with something and then open it by using more force. And secondly, I mixed up the things that open up to reveal the part that needs cleaning, I cleaned the wrong one first, so remember that the upper one is for left-right rotations and the side one is for up-down motions.

Another word to the wise... When you remove the little white springy sensors, be careful using a cotton swab on them. They have tiny little spring arms that get caught in the cotton webbing and can bend. I have 20/20 eyesight and can barely see them. So if you clean it out and then you have an issue with the stick rebounding from right to left, you probably bent one. I bent mine back with tweezers and it's working again but I have a feeling I'll have to replace that little white piece eventually.

Only had this controller since Christmas so it's been a little less than 3 months. This took me 1 hour 15 minutes, had some dirt and gunk in the top sensor for the stick that was drifting (not sure how). Cleaned it out, put it all back together and the controller is now like new! Thanks man. NOTE: It's hard to see, but it's very easy to miss the fine little threads from the q-tip that get stuck on the sensors. Make sure you look at it all from different angles and move your work light around as well.

I wouldn't recommend going into the mechanism with a Q-tip, but if you must you can wet down the webbing with some isopropyl and that'll keep them from getting stuck. That way the iso will evaporate and you won't have any liquid in your electronics.

Do not attempt unless you're willing to risk further damaging your controller! Removing the shell, screws and ribbon cables is child's play but once you get to the potentiometer, it's like doing brain surgery. The main board has four delicate solder points that you have to work around. Any sudden movements and you will pop one of them off - as I did. If that wasn't bad enough, I couldn't get the north door on the potentiometer to snap closed again after cleaning the sensors. My repeated attempts have broken the tiny plastic clips so now the little door will never stay closed. I would have to buy a new potentiometer and learn to do a difficult solder (which isn't going to happen) so my controller is toast. Please consider this before attempting. Still no clue if this fix would have even worked if I'd been successful in putting everything back together.

It is true you need to be careful. I would not recommend this unless you were used to making similar small repairs. Controllers are also not built to be repeatedly opened like this. I have an old PS4 controller which I've had to open several times to repeat the same repair, and over time several plastic clips have broken off, and most seriously one rim cable became frizzled after being removed and inserted too many times. I was able to repair it, but it did serve as a warning not to do this more often than is necessary, because the repair itself will cause wear and tear over time.

These things are usually not made to be opened repeatedly, but fortunately they sell replacement and custom cases so if yours gets too damaged you can swap the shell for a new one. Also you can usually re-solder any damaged connections if you happen to make any, but it is a good idea to have some experience doing small repairs before working on something you're not ready to replace.

From what ive experienced fixing my 2 drifting controllers is that if you stretch the little springy part further out it also helps with drift but you might need to adjust your game settings cause the input is a little different.

Thanks for the tutorial, one of the potentiometers in my left analog stick had a bunch of gunk. Cleaned it out and am facing minimal analog drift now. For anyone looking to try this out on their own, I highly recommend using a plastic prying tool to open up the controller. I didn't have one and scratched my controller in some places before I decided to purchase one. My stick sensors looked completely clean and lint free to the eye, so I had little hope finishing up the job. BUT to my surprise giving them a thorough clean with alcohol really fixed it! There must have been some kinda film on there not visible to the naked eye, 1 year old paper weight restored!!

For some reason the interior of the potentiometer in my controller was covered in like black grease, cleaning only reduced the drift, but also one of the copper plates in the part you take out was broken. I ended up replacing it with one from an old xbox 360 controller, since the manufacturer of the sticks is the same, and it worked... at least for today, time will tell how good of a solution it was.

I did a similar thing but I replaced a PS4 analog with a PS2, but just those green pieces and after flipping it around a couple times I found the right orientation and it fixed my stick drift for a good 7-8 months. It’s been 2 since your comment so I’m curious how yours is holding up?

No joke if you can build legos… you can do this, lay out a towel, open each part with little pressure (check for front clips once screws are removed) lay it out in sections as you do it to not loose pieces once you get to censors tweeze it out and put back in and work backwards. The flimsy circuits slide in easier if you do not force. You got this. - and to above point you buying a new one any way you 100% have nothing to loose.

Wow, thanks. Taking out the white pads and cleaning them helped fixed my drift stick. Hardest part was getting thr green brackets to click in again for reinstallation of the white pads.

Can confirm this works. Just gotta be careful prying open the sensor covers (green flaps you open just before cleaning). If you pry them open too far, then it’s very difficult to get them back into place. So pry those open just enough to access the sensor parts.

@@benmurkin3863 I used needle nose pliers but you’ve got to be sure to line it up perfectly and not force it. It will snap into place eventually.

This. The way this fella goes about it is too careless, they should be opened slowly and juuust enough as you said. The drift will return after some time as the cleaning isn't a permanent fix, calling for this operation to be repeated every now and then. Therefore we want to keep the bending back and forth to an absolute minimum.

I followed the instructions but after reassembling and turning it on, I tried a custom match on MW but the right stick is now stuck at point at the sky while turning to the left automatically. Any suggestions?

WARNING FOR PEOPLE ATTEMPTING THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME: Be very gentle! If you're just a little too rough, you can permanently damage the anolog stick. Although this method does work wonders, without caution, this will require you to buy a new controller all together

Excellent tutorial, thank you for sharing this it helped me out big time. The only thing I'd change is the battery removal, the wires are super thin and very easy to damage. I just left it connected and moved on the the next step.

I just did this and my drift got way worse. I'm definitely not saying to not do this though. This is super easy to do and I did find some gunk on one of the sensors. However, the stick itself creaks and I can feel the resistance when I move it. So just a forewarning to others in my same situation. You're probably gonna have to buy a new controller. Other than that amazing video; really taught me how to do this for other controllers when they get drift. I just hope the stick internals don't break on my next controller😅

I either broke or discovered that the teeny little metal end-part of the teeny wing of the inner white sensor piece had broken. I also found some orangish goop in only one of the two sensor components. I thought it could be intentional but could also have not been. What's weird is that it was still liquid. Anyway, after putting it back together it doesn't drift AS much but unfortunately still does. Either way, this walkthrough was a valuable resource in attemptig a fix. Thanks a lot!

You're a legend. It worked for me, but the difference is that I needed to clean the top green part as well. For those who want to try it, you need to be extremely careful or ask someone skilled to do it.

In case this may cause issues: make sure the copper thin plates have lots of tension. To add more tension, just gently bend those wires towards the center at the little center bump. Use ultra-thin needle tweezers and just give it a little bend upward. I did this fix, and plugged everything back in, and my joystick was constantly moving in a direction permanently. But then I tried what I mentioned above, and viola: good as new! No drift, no stuck joystick. Cheers, nice tutorial! Have used it 2wice now (other side was starting to drift, just did it again). Be safe, everyone!

I have an additional tip I would like to share, something I have never seen mentioned in any controller repair video, but which I learned through experience repairing my old PS4 controller. Quite often, cleaning the controller is insufficient, or provides only temporary relief. That is because the culprit may also be metal fatigue. In essence, the bumps on the two metal semicircles on the small white piece have to press against the corresponding metal circles inside the green lid. When metal fatigue sets in, those two metal semicircles no longer form a reliable electrical contact, and this causes the controller to both drift and possibly make sudden jerky movements on its own. The fix is either to slightly bend the two semicircles away from the white plastic to increase the angle, or replace the white piece entirely. In this video you can see very clearly that this controller also suffers from metal fatigue. At 6:44, you can see that there is a large gap between the two semicircles, and consequently the inner circle cannot form a reliable contact. Ideally, both semicircles should be perfectly side by side.

@@patricklouis439 I'd use a small screwdriver, push the flat head in the gap and twist. But I imagine opening it for the first time is always going to be a little rough. If you need to repeat the repair, opening those tabs is going to be easier the second time.

@@cccpike I think I may have to give it a shot after all. I opened it up yesterday which took a little more effort than I thought. The two clasps on the back of the housing were nearly impossible to unhook. I ended up just snapping them off as the thing is already held together by screws. Anyway after cleaning and greasing the drift isn't as bad but still occasional. I'm now wondering if those contacts under the green housing may be bowing in my left stick so I'm probably gonna attempt to open it again. Will update with results

This is the best video I've seen to fix this issue without having to actually replace the sticks. As long as you take your time and use the right equipment this tutorial will help. Did this myself with a disassembly kit I got off Amazon for £10 and it took me about 5-10minutes and instantly fixed the issue. A very big thank you to Y6 for this ☺️

This worked like a charm. One of the green censor inserts had this black crud around the inside. Make sure all the inserts are properly placed when you put it all back together. I put it back together and my joystick wasn’t even working…after dissembling again, I put one of those inserts in upside down. Did it all over and now works perf. Be patient and gentle. Cheers!

My controller was having terrible stick drift, to the point that it was pretty much unusable. I followed these directions to a tee - the little circular module really didn't even have any dirt or debris in it, but this still resolved my issue! If you drop your controller a lot this most likely won’t help you, but if you let your controller sit around and get dirt in there then I wouldn’t doubt this strategy works . I took my whole controller apart and did this, and it didn’t fix it but I have extreme stick drift it makes me do 360s lol, Best bet is to get a new controller💯

Thank you very much. Controller was unusable. Went step by step. Took my time. Used a thumbtack to pry green sensors apart. Q tip was black from cleaning the left stick. Right stick seems perfect. Saved me some dough.
