Hey, love the content and your videos! Would like to just point out that it doesn't actually filter out wavelengths or frequencies of lights, but rather directions. Normally light comes in at all angles (unpolarized), but when it hits a surface like the top of a lake, the light that's bounced back is mostly one direction. The polarizer has a bunch of slits in a certain direction so as you turn it around you only let one 'direction' of light through, so you can do things like get rid of the sun's glare off the land which is polarized in one direction. Also very useful for filming subjects through windows, as you can cut through the glare and reflections as they're polarized a certain angle. This's how many computer monitors work as well; hold a polarizing filter up to your computer screen or monitor and you can rotate to a certain angle where you can't see the light any more. You can also remove the polarizing film that's in most monitors and grab some glasses with polarized lenses to have a screen that looks completely white to everyone but you, but I digress.

I used to have a cheap $8 Bower Polarizer. And one time while I was shooting a wedding, I put it on my lens, to try it out. 15 minutes after I put it on, I left the camera on the tripod, while I was searching for something in my bag. And one kid accidentally pushed over my camera and it fell down on a hard ground, lens first. The Polarizer was completely destroyed, I had problems removing it from the lens. But once I removed it, the lens was 100% fine :)

Do polarizers limit your freedom when it comes to color grading? I noticed that in most of your examples it appears to be very saturated and contrasty. It looks great, however, if you are planning on doing some heavy grading would you recommend just using a strong ND?

The technical side: A polarizer filters monopolarized light. This means it many filters reflactions from every non-metallic surface like water or glass. It also filters the reflaction of the sky on leaves which makes them seem more green. Furthermore it filters the light which is reflected by particles in the sky making the sky seem more blue. You need to buy a circular polarizer as non-circular polarizers can mess with your autofocus and whitebalance. You can stack a polarizer with any other polarizer. you can stack to polarizers to make get an adjustable "sunglass" for your camera (for shooting photography in snow for example).

Thanks for the great video Devin! It means a lot that you'd spend the time to make this and share what you've learned. Do you use polarizers on your inspire 1? I use an ND8 most of the time since I can't control aperture on my Phantom 3 Pro. If I had an Inspire with an X5 that has aperture control then I would definitely look into polarizers. Not having remote control over the effect of the polarizer makes it seem like it's much less effective too though. I love my GH4 with speedbooster, but one of the main drawbacks is putting a variable ND or polarizer causes ugly green flares when pointing anywhere near a light source like the sun

Devin will it be a good idea to buy a step up ring set (52, 58, 62, 67, 72 and 77 to 82mm) so you just buy a 82mm filter and you can use it on your other lenses that have less diameter ??
@TheEditingResource8 жыл бұрын
It's generally better to have different size filters for different lenses so you don't have to fiddle with adapters and don't have to worry about switching everything whenever you want to switch lenses. Sometimes you'll find your lenses having matching diameters anyways and you can buy 2 filters that work quickly with 4 lenses.

@YuTubrz8 жыл бұрын
Post production can't achieve nearly the same result. If you have no data to edit with, for example at 4:05 where all you see is the reflection of the sky in the pond, then post production will be of no use whatsoever. You'll be able to change all the color that is there, but for the white reflection of the sky you'll be out of luck. In-camera is virtually always better than relying on post production for things like this.

You can use a UV filter for lens protection for a lot less money. Or you could put one over your Polarizer if you thought there was a chance it would get messed up. Also if your on a budget, you can buy a polarizer for your largest lens, and buy conversion rings (step) to fit smaller lenses.
