I am a certified Detroit Diesel tech and work on these every day. The major issues depend on which generation you have. Epa 07 I am not too familiar with. Epa 10, oil leaks on rear structure, head gasket, cam housing, injection Pump, air compressor, oil pan, oil coolant module, Aftertreatment issues. Injector issues GHG 14, probably the best DD engine they built. Oil leaks are the same on every engine. Injector issues, can cause backward running engines. GHG17. Metal in fuel/Injection Pump grenading. Head gaskets leaking, wrist pins coming apart, one-box issues. Gen 5/GHG21. The absolute worst engine Detroit has ever put their name on. Liner o-rings fail causing coolant to leak out of headgaskets. Head gasket oil leaks, the overhead adjustment needs done several times before 100k miles or you will drop a valve bridge, bypassing oil passages, engines majorly failing before 10k miles. I've seen 1 with 675 miles on it drop a valve, just rebuilt an 8100 mile engine that broke an oil ring. Those are the most common issues I have seen. I would stay with the GHG14 engines, 17s are not terrible but not great, avoid Gen 5 like the plague.

@Eduardo Sandoval GHG14 is 2014-2016 I think even some 2013's were GHG14 as well. Detroit typically comes out with the new engine 1 year before the EPA required Date.

Hello so is the 2019 model a gen5 engine im thinking about getting one
@Mopars_41
@Mopars_41 Жыл бұрын
@dguido1000 no. Gen 5 cane out in 2020/2021. Easiest was to tell if you have a Gen 5 or ghg17 engine is to look at the fuel system, intake manifold, egr cooler, or one box. The ghg 17 intake manifold is mire square than the Gen 5. Ghg 17 high pressure fuel rail supply lines stick straight up on the rail, on a Gen 5 they are angled. Those are the easiest. GHG 17 engines are good engines, but they have their problems too. I will say that Detroit is finally starting to fix a lot of the Gen 5 issues. I'd you do get a Gen 5, get a late 22 or 23 truck.

Our fleet has had five high pressure fuel pump failures. From 2015-2018 year models, but the 2017-2018s seem to be more problematic than the older ones. So far the failures have all been between 300-350,000 miles. First warning will be a knocking sound or tapping noise at idle that almost sounds like a burnt exhaust valve. You’ll also see super fine metallic shavings that look like grey sand in the bottom of the fuel filter housing and even on top of the filter cartridge itself. As the pump continues to disintegrate you’ll notice a loss of power and sluggish throttle response, particularly under a heavy load. The fix is “simply” replacing the high pressure fuel pump. The pump alone is around $1,800 last time we had to buy one. If not under warranty, the total cost is about $7,000 (US) because basically the entire fuel system has to be replaced. Not just the pump but also the lines, injectors, etc. And no, you will not get any warning lights with this failure.

so i just got a 2016 dd15ni should replace all the fuel system asap to avoid break down and costing an engine right like they say an an ounce of prevention is better then a pound of problems. or something like that. Larry B

@benjaminreed4781 Жыл бұрын
@@larrybroad8746 : if you are still covered under the warranty you might be able to talk the dealer into it. Otherwise I think I’d take my chances. From my experience you’ll get a warning before it dies completely. I was able to drive mine another 60 miles to the shop after it started making a noise like a burnt valve, and the other drivers here had similar time before it quit.

That doesn't make sense if the HP pump is failing as its after the filtration unit so no evidence will be seen in filter so if your seeing this contamination it could be related to why your getting the failure not from it !

My truck has a diagnostics tool on board. Different than just codes and tells me all I need to know from what the computer is seeing. I have computer scanner as well. Though so far have had no need for it. Series 60 without all the emissions crap. I'll take that engine and truck any day over all this new stuff. Last thing I changed was an oil coolant level sensor. Takes about 5 minutes to changed it and its working great again. I am not a certified mechanic. Though I know my way around a truck for most things and can do most the jobs that are needed on it. I keep learning and that is key here. I will build a shop to be able to take the truck apart and put it back together again. Then I'll know most of what I need to. I enjoy working on my own equipment and learning how to fix and maintain it.

The DD15 is a great motor with 2 exceptions; the emissions systems (horrible for all diesels) and Detroit used WAY TOO MANY plastic parts that frequently break, hence why I bought a '99 build CAT, though I considered a 60 series

Exhaust gas recirculation has never reduced emissions. It tests cleaner. EGR is a favorite malicious prank of many government departments. Closing the control valve or blocking the flow shuts down the exhaust. The motor perks up and runs better in every way.

Re: cheap engine oil. I was a placer miner for years. Large dozers, excavators, water pumps, loaders. We bought our oil at Walmart - by the pallet. Why ? Walmart does not make oil - they send out tenders and oil companies make the oil. Never an issue we could point to being oil related. Change every 250 hours.

Exactly. Walmart has to have a good reputation, think that plays into oil and batteries too. They have to good ratings too, like dexOS rating, you like you say, it's got to be a big name making it. Been using it for years, even been pushing my engines even over 200,000 with no problems.

The fix for cold temperature 🤒 for the DD15 or the DD16 Driver's should invest into a FASS fuel system with heater it will prevent your diesel ⛽ fuel from gelling over will increase reliability and fuel mileage
@Freightlinerbob
@Freightlinerbob 2 жыл бұрын
That heater won’t do anything to keep fuel from gelling in the tank. It only heats at the filter head and only if the ignition key is on which likely means the truck is idling or in the case of the coolant heater, the truck must be idling. When an engine is idling, fuel is being circulated and heated up without any help from any outside source. Especially that little heater element in the FASS system. That FASS system must be prone to gelling or icing since it’s hanging out there off the frame rail and not on the side of the nice warm engine like the OEM filters.
@carlthor91
@carlthor91 2 жыл бұрын
@@Freightlinerbob Agree, APU with tank heaters, then OEM Fuel filtration with heaters. Some newer engine designs do not return as much fuel to the tanks, as the older ones, this can lead to fuel gelling, in bad conditions. Best wishes from 55.75N

For oil it is the API rating. As long as the API is approved for that engine your good. Engine manufacturers also say never change the weight of the oil in the new engines, that they are engineered for a specific viscosity. I have been using Pittsburg Power’s catalyst and I have to say it’s expensive approx $18 per fill up but boy does it really cut down on carbon buildup. I also had a series 60 and yes it leaked as much as my AMF Harley Davidson. If you did not see some drippings better check the oil there may not be any to leak out. :-)

I am a Freightliner Parts Salesman..common issues..(1) leaking oil pan gaskets. Make sure to change the bolts w/the grommets. There is now a kit just for the grommets! (2) Oil leaks at the injection tubes to injectors...don't just change the gaskets at the injectors...replace the six injection tubes (they come with the gasket). (3) Oil leaks at the injector wiring that goes through the valve cover gasket (oil can travel through the front & rear harness and cause electrical disruption between injectors and ECM), (4) DPF issues do to extended idle times, note cleaning the DPF filters does not bring your DPF filters to 100%!!! Install new filters and you want have replace them as often! (5) DO NOT DELETE THE DEF SYSTEM, THE TRUCK WILL NEVER RUN CORRECTLY AGAIN, AND IF YOU GET CAUGHT THE FINES WILL BE STEEP! NOT TO MENTION NO FREIGHTLINER DEALER WILL EVER WORK ON YOUR TRUCK AGAIN UNTIL THE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY REPAIRED TO OEM SPECS!

Yep the so called cycles(every time your engine changes the temps so engine off to running engine) are as I heard somewhere on YT way more important than mileage. No wonder car engines wont last that long as truck engines, we put them thru way more cycels per mile than we do with big rigs. Add winter to it and it takes a huge shift of size in quick time from very cold engine that was off to running engine, like -20 C to + what, a 100 C? In like few minutes?

The tech only test drove it in the parking lot - the squealing dosent show up until about 45 mph and I explained all this to them in the beginning I went back made them pull my old hub fan from the garage and give it back to me - now I am waiting till morning to see what their story is I am suspicious of a false diagnosis - its still squealing just as it did before I went to the dealership Tech mentioned a saturated belt but said they didn't have one snd recommended I get it replaced I am not paying $2900 over a sqeaky belt it thsts all it is. - I am going to take the old fan hub to a different shop snd see if they can yell me if its faulty or not This has been a terrible experience so far - Anither guy was waiting 5 days and they still haven't figured out what the problem is on his truck Maybe decriminalization of all drugs in Oregon was not the best thing since sliced bread idk but this is complete bull crap ! I am going to call my bank Monday and put a stop hold on the payment if Freightliner dosent come up with a solution worth $2900.00 very soon !!!

EGR valve, cooler, DPF will NEVER get better, you can BET ON IT! Also, you are mistaken regarding the amount of gases the EGR puts BACK into the engine... you said 10%, but it is more like 50%, 5X more!!!

I hate all this emission garbage. Killing engines for a feel good idea. Does all the def fluid, dpf and the rest of the emission bs not have an environmental impact? Or is this just like electric cars that they say are going to save the planet?

I'm back in the day if you didn't see oil leaking out of a tractor with a series 60 Detroit there was something wrong the sky was going to fall or you owe the IRS a billion dollars or something because it was not normal for a series 60s not to leak oil something was wrong with that day🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@MrPizzaman09

It's the unfortunate issue with engine reviews on the internet. The valuable information is from the OEM'S themselves who have the real warranty data on hundreds of thousands of engines. The big fleets also can get some decent data once they have a few hundred trucks of each. The same goes with fuel economy... it's useless to use one person's value because there are too many variables at play. I'm an engineer who fixes these warranty issues.

Coming from a small company that had nothing but pre-emissions cats I think the DD 15 is a joke. We have a fleet of over 30 Cascadia’s all with DD engines we’ve had five of our trucks blow the glued on piece of plastic on the driver side of the oil suction manifold completely off and lose oil pressure instantly. The O-rings are one thing causing low oil pressure but the manifold breaking kills them instantly. After seeing four of our own trucks and two outside customers trucks with completely demolished engines the owner of our fleet decided to pull every truck he had in and replaced the suction manifold some of which had already had the O-rings replaced due to low oil pressure. That’s a lot of money to spend because of crappy plastic parts. These new DD engines are not real Detroit’s this is a Mercedes engine I don’t care where it’s built but it’s a rebranded Mercedes engine. I believe in other countries they call it a Mercedes SM 471 which you can actually see the 471 just beneath the valve cover on a DD engine you can look this up. We’ve had a lot of bad air compressors which are a pain in the ass to change especially on the shorter nose trucks which if you’re an owner operator that’s extra labor you’re paying for to get it replaced. Get an older truck fix it up and be happy. We’ve not had any major problems with oil leaks other than the little seals around the injector lines which isn’t a big deal and leaks around the crank case filter or separator. Aside from that the engines do OK if one of the petty problems doesn’t kill it first. I consistently see owner operators with older trucks that they have practically rebuilt giving way better service than some of these newer ones with all the electrical and emissions nightmares not to mention the automatic transmissions when they go haywire. Honestly don’t see how owner operators afford to keep these things on the road. Debonded hoods the glue that holds the top of the truck together coming loose leaking windshields Frieghtliner actually put a plastic gutter type thing over the fuse box so when the cab leaks it doesn’t kill the sam cabin. I have learned to hate these trucks even though I know they’re nice and comfortable and do a good job when they’re working right but they are super poor quality everything is cheap. I had a owner of another trucking company explain to me why he would spend 50 grand on a high mileage Peterbilt or Kenworth and then take a gamble on how long it would run before he had to rebuild the engine or replace a transmission or drive axle and he said because if I keep good service records on these trucks and keep them looking good I can turn around and sell it and get back what I have in it and he’s exactly right and I’ve seen him do it for years. His early 2000s model peterbiults and Kenworth all with cat engines give better service than 80% of our newer cascadias. The interiors and cab definitely hold up way better

i went from owning 12 379" s with cats to all cascadias. fuel went from 4.5-5.5 to 7.5-9mpg. it would cost me 40-50k a year per truck in repairs. just traded in my 2019"s and got my new 2023"s. when you own your own trucks you will think different. you guys must all be horrible drivers or something to be destroying them. don't believe all the bs they tell you. put 80k on a 22 year old truck then 35k on a platinum caterpillar rebuilt then tell me how great it is ..
