Hey bud just a thought , you can put a cup in the base of each ficus pot and fill them with meal worms and dubia roaches. Neither can climb out of a bowl/cup and the chameleons will just come down and pick them off as needed. That way you wont have to worry about if they are getting the crickets because they will forsure be gone as fast as you throw them and instead will end up in your pool lol. Love the idea tho!

Hi Kyle and Ryan That was great. Ficus is one of my favorite plants, yours is ficus benjamina n is s great one to grow, easy and very rewarding. Just want to make a suggestion, the trees, individually, will have to be watered where the water comes out from the bottom assuring all roots got a drink. You can place a plastic terra cotta saucer under each tree to capture all the excess water so it doesn't run all over your beautiful enclosure. Hope you don't mind the suggestion. Enjoy your new project.

Why import them from outside of the country when Jackson's are literally everywhere here in the states and you can find them for pretty cheap.
@constancebowman8877

These particular Jackson’s I think are Xanththolophus. People in the hobby are trying to bring back a larger and healthier Jackson like they originally were instead of the muddled, smaller Jacksons you find in the hobby now.

Jacksons to my knowledge are not established. They do pop up from time to time, however they cannot survive the dry season in south Florida and doubt they would do well with the occasional cold snaps.

As someone who's herped South Florida for the better part of 10 years I can tell you that Jackson's are not truly established in South Florida. A few adjunct populations exist from seeding efforts by collector's, but they never seem to survive the summer, surprisingly the winter doesn't seem to bother them. What we do have established are Veileds, Oustalets, and Panthers.
@SwampApeSci
@SwampApeSci 4 жыл бұрын
However with regular mistings and plenty of shade you shoud not have an issue keeping them that way, especially since your patio is a much more controlled environment.

you gotta put a base on those trees so the winds don't knock them over
@PrimitivePredators

The screened lanai cuts down the wind quite considerably as well as being behind the pool waterfall and next to the house and large trees outside the screened lanai so wind is dramatically decreased in this location due to all those barriers.

Did y'all do any research before getting them? Nothing about that setup is correct other than a somewhat decent natural climate, they are solitary normally in the wild.....
@PrimitivePredators
@PrimitivePredators 4 жыл бұрын
Ever since we setup the chameleons, we have been keeping a close watch on their interactions with one another. Surprisingly 2 of the females and a male have been within a foot of one another for the last 2 days even with having such an expansive space to retreat to if they are stressed from the close proximity. We also monitor their coloration to ensure they are not stressed and all the chameleons have been bright green which is great to see. Now we have also added 5 more trees to the setup so even with 10 ficus plants, the majority of the chameleons have chosen to be close to one another which is interesting to see as we too have heard they are solitary animals.
@jordanwatson7881
@jordanwatson7881 4 жыл бұрын
I honestly think this is a recipe for disaster. One of those males is going to harass the other, it'll stop eating and starve likely, as well as the higher heats in Florida is probably going to be too much for them. Plus, a screened outdoor enclosure? One tear they find and then you've got invasive Jackson's in your backyard.
@jordanwatson7881
@jordanwatson7881 4 жыл бұрын
Continuing on that - what about when the issue of babies arrives? This species gives live birth and you're going to have babies with a male & female combination, no questions about it. Would you separate the pregnant females provided they show signs? Do you have additional chameleon enclosures for the babies and the pregnant females? Leaving the babies in with the adults is also a terrible idea. There is a lot more cons and pros to this, as cool as it looks.
