Day 3- There wasn't a better forecast for the rest of our trip so we fished as hard as we could for as long as we could. In true Orkney fasion it still wasn't easy going and we had a few obstacles to overcome- like creels, ropes, strong wind, swell and seals- but we had an epic day of lure fishing for pollack, and the target of landing a double figure pollack from the shore happened. FINALLY! after literally hundreds of ours of fishing, driving, scrambling around cliffs to marks that were no good, we saw 2 BIGS landed amongst many other decent Pollack.
Possibly the first time a pollack has been caught from the shore and shared on KZbin?!
Join us on Day 3.
Ever since I started to fish, I've been obsessed with catching one of the UK's hardest fighting fish and to catch a double figure (weighing above 10lb) from the shore with lures has been a dream of mine. I've travelled all over the country, visiting many remote and sometimes hard to access locations, trying to find them this video documents one such lure fishing road trip. The style of catching is very important to me, and I always use balanced, light lure fishing tackle. Will I finally succeed after all these years of trying?
Tackle-
Reel- Daiwa BG Mag Sealed 2500
Rod- Tailwalk Hi-Tide SSD 83MH- 15-50g
Braid- Tasline Elite 20lb, 1.7PE

Having caught double figure Pollock from the shore a couple of decades ago on spinning gear this brings back many memories. Main problem was ensuring you had clear ground immediately beneath you with little kelp & clear access to the water's edge. No one would bother fishing for anything else if these fish were evenly distributed across the country. Fantastic fish & exciting scrappers but getting to the marks does need a pair of hiking boots & great care.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
You're right about the mark requirements, but tough to find them with a good quality if fish still present. If I had to catch species of fish for he rest of my life, its would be good sized pollack. So exciting!

Aye there was a bass over 6lb caught at cambois last week on a lure Also a 8lb cod caught off the rocks at tynemouth during the day on bait last week in a Bedlington comp. He won it, obviously. My pleasure Dave. I just missed out on the MoG's heyday but there's still loads of fish there. Orkney is a little different in that the fish are spread out, some marks hold monsters and other have either tiddlers or nothing at all.

A great description! I've had my arse kicked before so I've worked hard on getting my knots and drag set up just right. FG knot with a Rizzuto finish and then a good Uni knot from the leader to my lure clip. The drag is the most important part of all that though, means you can lean in with confidence.

Eyup Nathan. Well I'm glad that the gods of fishing smiled and your huge effort has been rewarded. I've been on a commercial vessel when we have shot pots in front of anglers and I've stood on a rock while someone else has done the same in front of me. No-one's fault is it? Keep calm, be careful when stripping weed off the ropes and stash the free lures although trebles and barbed hooks can be a cow to get out of rope. I sniff another success in the offing. Good luck and I'll sithi after! Dave

@@SlippyLimpets Yep - it's the same structure, although you can shoot on sand for Crab. I like potting 'cos its minimal in terms of sea bed destruction, breeding females are protected and both undersize and by-catch is returned. No spoilers for Sunday then! I'll just have to wait.....Sithi after.

Agreed, and you can even catch fish in them. Although, in Scotland there's no limit on the number of pots and in my local area, undersized are (apparently) regularly sold on the quayside and IFCA ignore it.

Absolutely chuffed to bits for you Nathan.😀😀 Like buses. None for years, then 2 together.😮😮 You deserve them, 👏and I'm sure Lewis? Louis, will achieve the target soon too.🙏🤞 Just when you think you've escaped the swimmers🏊, surfers,🏄 tinsel tossers,🎊 a guy turns up in a boat and drops his lines.🤬 All the sea, and he picks there!😲 Some anglers would have been bouncing 7oz leads off his boat.🫣 But respect to you and your mate, you carried on.👍 🎣. Yeah, that's his living, and you're on his patch. Lovely mix and a stunning wrasse.👏👏 Well done both of you, and thanks for sharing.🌟🌟 Take care and stay safe.😷🙊

Thanks Ian, much appreciated. There's no way we could have moved after catching the first on my 2nd cast, we knew there would be more so had to keep trying. Luckily they were at range so we were only losing cheap-ish spinners (the pot lad must have a bucket full now😂) and no fish were lost on the ropes. Thanks, as always, and tight lines👍🎣

Well done :) Looks like a lot of the places i've fished. Those big pollock are very tricky to land from the shore....as you said they always know where the snags are and you can't stop them because of the line angle.....I got myself a kayak for that reason! - sick of hooking the biggies after putting in hours of effort to get to the best spots only to lose them in the snags. Just got back from a trip to Skye with the kayak, perfect weather,flat calm seas and few midgies :) got a few doubles to hand as well :)
@SlippyLimpets

They are tricky, and I really like the challenge of it. Kayaks are awesome for access and great fun to fish from, we often use them to access shore marks as well. Think I recognise your name, must have passed a sign on the road near one of the barriers?

@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
I'm still in shock! The swell is pretty strong up there. It's a ground swell from the 8FT swell rolling across the Atlantic, small I'm deep water but powerful when it hits shore, can catch you out up there, especially when the tide starts flooding

Wow! That 13lber is a unit! I’m actually amazed you were able to land them. I guess as they bolted for the ledge they didn’t do that crash dive out too far and just wanted to hang in the kelp right in front? Either way, great fishing and great knot tying. Onto the next challenge!
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
It was a brute! After my trip in February i knew i couldn't give them and inch and turn, hence the rapid pressure and winding. There wasn't much structure between where I was casting from and where they were hooked- they definitely knew what they were doing by heading to the ledge infront of us. Even then I needed to keep the pressure on and get them as high in the column as possible, else it would have been rock/barnacle against braid and game over. Completely different way of fishing to our usua pollackl marks but very, very exciting. And yeah, attention to knots was the most important part of the setup. Next challenge is to break the 15lb mark, or even break the UK record at 18lb. Although, I'll never kill one of them for the sake of my ego. A video will be enough 😂

Thanks LV. Got to admit it's the first time I've seen one on KZbin- could be another first for my channel, along with a drone shot of a bass hitting a topwater. Aye, it's not the most comfortable mark I've fished, my toes were black after standing on that slope for so long, but that's all forgotten about after that scrap. I still call them Zen's (the old name) but they're called a Razor Claw Silver Minnow and cost something like £1.50 from ebay. Hands down the most prolific metal I've ever used. Thanks, as always, and tight lines 🎣 👍

You should, so cheap and catch loads of different species, we've had bass, pollack, wrasse, coalfish, cod, pouting to name a few. They don't twist your braid like seekers do either. Just remember to replace the trebles because they're made of 🧀
@londonviking3801
@londonviking3801 2 жыл бұрын
@@SlippyLimpets According to Henry Gilbey, the seekers don't spin but wobble. I've not had a problem with surf seekers twisting braid (tho never caught a fish on them either - lol) Looks like those metal minnows are hard to get but I will find them. Yes, I did spot you had single hooks on your lures, good man!
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
He would say that 😉 they don't spin if you don't pause your retrieve, but pretty sure SG use the 360 spin as a selling point, though, and since pollack love hitting lures on the drop, you end up getting twisted braid due to the pauses.

Thanks Andrew, I us sessions like this as a handle when the going gets tough as well. Spinners are called Razor Claw Silver Minnows. Lewis bought a 2nd hand 10ft Tenryu Power Beast jigging plugging rod capable of chucking 100g especially for this trip. It's designed for catching fish like GT's etc, so we thought it would be too beasty and not that great with Soft Plastics, but it seemed to work well.
