Strokes happen in two ways. In the first, a blocked artery can cut off blood to an area of the brain. And this is known as an ischemic stroke. What causes brain stroke? There are two main causes of stroke: a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Some people may have only a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain, known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), that doesn't cause lasting symptoms.

I was 57 years of age when I had my stroke! Occurred in the posterior limb of the internal capsule. I'm in healthcare as an exercise physiologist with extensive training in integrative medicine and the day it occurred in April 2022 I knew exactly what was going on. However, I was shocked! Why? Because I am a health fanatic! I've worked out all my life, never been overweight, never smoked, don't drink alcohol, cholesterol was 169, HDL was 57, triglycerides were 65, LDL was less than 100, blood pressure on the day I had the stroke was 109/69, my fasting insulin is 3, my fasting glucose is in the 80s, my A1c was 4.8, ALL my clotting factors were perfect and no genetic mutations. I am the first one in my entire family who ever had a stroke and my mom is still alive at 91. Hospital ran over $50K worth of tests over 3 days trying to figure out what caused it and nothing. As a matter of fact I have 0% plaque in every major artery from the heart to the brain and all in the brain every single blood vessel is clear with no signs of vessel disease. Nothing! My HS-CRP was 0.6 and all other inflammatory markers were also perfect! Homocysteine was 6.5! So, sometimes the body simply cannot be understood and in my case it was a total shocker not only to me, but to all my family and caring physicians. Live life and live it to the fullest because I don't care who you are, nothing is guaranteed! Live for today and live the best you know how and make it a point to enjoy every moment! Blessings!

@@m.a.4630 Stress can be a cause of some medical conditions that lead to disease, but everything I have checked thus far has come back normal. All my markers that would point to someone being stressed also came back normal. For example, a saliva cortisol test, blood pressure, etc..

Wow...makes me more motivated to stay on my daily IF (intermittent fasting and eating 2 times a day). I want to age well and go out with a bang rather than be paralyzed from a stroke. Great video!

@@cherylkoski7184 ha! That’s awesome. I exercise not at all for I’m paralyzed. Yeah I could do a bit - but I don’t yet my weight hasn’t changed. It’s all down to your metabolism. And I’m fortunate mine is busy.

I just suffered a stroke to my left eye about a couple of weeks ago due to high blood pressure, not diabetes. I’ve got three surgeries to complete, and, luckily for me, the prognosis is good, per my doctor. I could’ve gone blind, but it was caught early. I’m only 53 y/o, and I’m scared. But, after these surgeries my doctor will then be able to guide me on how we will be moving forward. I have multiple health ailments (neuropathy, gastroperisis, diabetes, high blood pressure, and sciatica), and it kind of feels like I won’t live beyond ten years, but rest seems to be the cure. The more quality sleep and rest I get, the better I feel.

My dad died of a stroke at 76. He didn't smoke, rarely drank, ate a VERY healthy diet, exercised 3-4 times a week, hiked the Appalachian Trail, completed marathons, was a bodybuilder in his younger days, and lifted regularly into his 50s. He was bricklayer and so had an extremely active and physical life. He had a stroke at the gym, and eventually succumbed to complications a month after spending that time in the hospital. He did NOT have high blood pressure. As his son, what I did recognize, is that over the past 5 years or so in conversation, he would suddenly just become incapable of finding the right words, he would just go quiet. I also noticed during our hikes, he would lose orientation at a certain altitude. The point is, don't ignore obvious cognitive changes, even though there is no common presentation or signs of an impending medical issue. Again, he was extremely healthy, and yet sometimes it's just out of your control.

Living healthy and doing the right thing reduces the odds of certain health events....but it does not eliminate them

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I feel him being so diligent with his health is what allowed him to make it to 76. As a stroke nurse, MANY of the people we get are much younger than your dad. If only they were respectful of their bodies like your dad.

I am sorry to hear this, you are completely correct that nothing is a guarantee and you can die at any moment however your Father's healthy lifestyle over thousands of years and billions of people would definitely dramatically reduce the risks of so many killers. Just like you can have people smoke, drink, take drugs, not exercise and live to 90; however we must realize exceptions and outliers are not the rule. For personally I try to live a moderate lifestyle because both examples are extremities and I figured the enjoyment of life vs healthy lifestyle can be a compromise.

Yes. Mine did. I was standing in front of my mirror in my ensuite bathroom. Then I lost consciousness as my low blood pressure had plummeted to the point where I fainted. I broke my neck. It was just the way I landed. If my husband hadn’t been nearby I would have died. I was 52. My health had never been a concern. My low blood pressure included. And that was the moment my life changed. My spinal chord at the C5/6 level was affected. And was inoperable. So I will never walk again. I am now 65. I have a good life. My twin sons are now young men and we’re a close family still operating our family business. And I’m still an integral part of the mix! ❤ life is precious - drink it all up like you’re thirsty in a desert xo

@@denisepaulsenful My sis-in-law had an aneurysm 20 years ago and has been in assisted living ever since. One moment all is normal, 1 second later all has changed. I'm so happy that you carried on as best you can with a good life!

@@geod3589 thank you for that and I’m terribly sorry about your sis-in-law … I could have been in a similar situation if I hadn’t gained enough control to look after my own personal care - which I have fortunately. I have help tho. The govt in my province fund 21-hrs a week for help with anything I need. So I hired 2 friends who live locally and they help with cooking and cleaning and this allows me to work - to spend the day with my family. And it’s a wonderful life! Every day is to be celebrated. Even the crappy ones. They need to be appreciated for what they bring. To make us appreciate the great days even more. ❤️

My mother is 88 and counting - her partner is 90. They both eat what they want to when they want to. They eat moreorless healthy and then she will say, “We stopped in at McDonalds drive thru on the way home and got some French fries 🍟 and an ice cream cone 🍦” what can I say. You can do all you like. Or you can be like my Mum abd Robert. Genetically predisposed to good health.

I know a friend (75 yrs.) who ate so well, whole foods, vegan, no high cholesterol, no diabetes yet she had a TIA (actually, more than one) which has now caused a cascade of serious health issues and landed her in the hospital for 2 months and counting. Her only symptoms were vertigo, which sometimes caused her to fall and black out briefly, and high amounts of perceived stress and trauma. I would caution everyone to also watch out for these more subtle signs that you may be headed for trouble.

If your friends drank diet Pepsi or diet Coke, the aspartame in them is a genuine poison. Also, Splenda/sucralose is another genuine poison to the human body. Food companies use these poisons because they are cheap, very very sweet but most importantly......incredibly addictive. Both completely artificial chemicals are more like drugs then sweeteners. I am urging everyone to stop drinking or eating anything with these two poisons in them. After decades of drinking the diet sodas with these poisons in them, the brain and body damage they do can be so severe, it is not reversable. Never let a Diet Soda kill someone you love.

My mother, and her grandfather, both died from a hemorrhagic stroke; my mother fairly young and without any warning. Because it appears that there is a strong inherited component involved, maybe weaker vein walls in the brain, it would be good to know if there is any lifestyle practices that could strengthen the vein walls. She did not have high blood pressure.

Hospitals, doctors offices and schools should be places where good nutrition is taught and provided not places that contribute to disease and obesity. It is crazy the hospitals are feeding people the very food that caused the heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer that they are treating. Every person in the hospital should receive some nutrition education before being released. Every doctor visit should be an opportunity to educate patients about how food choices impacts their health outcomes. The fact that doctors do not get nutrition training as part of their training makes no sense. Medicare and Medicaid should require nutrition education as part of patient care. Focus should be on food choices. Fasting should be investigated as a treatment for disease.

@@lpg12338 You are your own best health advocate. Eat a healthy whole food plant based diet, reduce stress, get adequate sleep and exercise regularly. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. You will be healthier, happier and have lower transportation and health care expenses. Make a bicycle your first choice for short distance travel.

My bp and cholesterol are scaring me. Have very high triglycerides, 300! I think being on lovenox is contributing to my issues with high cholesterol. Drs blow it off but I have 2 brain aneurysms and am very insulin resistant. why don't they discuss anything with me to start turning these things around 😭

Italians eat a lot of pasta, which is a high carb, high glucose, processed durum wheat product. Is that also part of the Mediterranean diet?

Thank you Doc, this is helpful for understanding the many ways of how these complicated issues come about. Where you say “smoking” is this about cigarettes or is nicotine itself a part of the problem - as in dip, pouches, vapes, patches, gum, loose shredded dip, and all that has nicotine. (I’m not sure exactly how to formally word this.) Is smoking about the damage to the lungs and nicotine? Or nicotine? Or the combination? And is this as damaging without the smoking part? Which would seem like it’s about lungs. I appreciate your extremely informative sharing. Gratefully, a

I was born with a mild case of cerebral palsy which the doctors told me was due to a pre-natal stroke. I have no idea what caused this type of stroke.

Ah. Thanks. It feels refreshing to me! Left MCA stroke ~> dense contralateral hemiplegia, loss of sensation on the right side, neglect of the right visual field, and global aphasia, etc. Slip of the tongue to the “left.” 😊

I always assumed these cereals were not highly processed and could be healthy in conjunction with lean proteins. Interested if u have more info, thanks.

I had an acute stroke I think my lupus contributed to this. I use to eat fast food 4 times a week. Now I try to make pasta or eat salad with chicken. I also consume homemade banna strawberry smoothie from low sugar high protein base yogurt

I regret taking the covid medical intervention that we can't name easily without comments being deleted, as I think especially for young and healthy people this is the biggest risk factor in increasing their 10 year cardiovascular event risk score sadly. The more we learn about it the more we realise the benefits were dramatically overstated and the risks significantly understated. I'm angry at myself for going along with it.

I too, deeply regret it. I felt bullied into it. I’m healthy, 39, and after the needle, developed blood issues that is having to be treated and making my life miserable.

....Mike, what do you think of the news, about age reversing in mice, and humans eventually gaining this capability?..... Your angle on the sharing of health knowledge, is good to hear....As people are trying to stay strong long... Keep up the true good work....Maybe you can do a video, on the reverse aging, that's in the news lately.......And maybe if cells are not getting proper nutrients, because of insulin resistance (according to some ideas, in the last few years), then maybe cells are having strokes?........

I smoked cannabis with tobacco for decades and suffered massive stroke 8 months ago. Hemiplegic on the left. Lost the use of my left side almost completely. Three months in rehabilitation taught me to walk again with a stick... slowly. I feel very depressed and hopeless. I was a gitarist and now have very little movement in my left hand. Tje doctors day there is very little chance of much recovery. It's pretty awful

I have a CVA which effected my both of my legs,so now I am 61 years old as I got the CVA when I was not quite 58 years old….these days I’m using a walker 4 outside but inside I don’t have 2 use my walker….I do have carers e every day but every once a fortnight on a Monday I give my carer a roster day off so that my carer can be the family bc 2 me family is also important!!! I had no idea what a CVA was until one of my former carers read it that I had the CVA but later that evening I read it on google and watch it on You Tube gee WIZZ did I get a bit of a fright….as well no wonder I said “” ouch “”” when a friend touched both of my legs because ya couldn’t see in my both legs was no veins and in my hands no veins either….:so each time I was getting my meals in the hospital I ate with a spoon so never with a fork or knife..,,, so these days I am thankful that I am still alive as well I am become a non-smokiker so I gave up almost 2 years ago!!! So if I restarted smoking I won’t be able to tell the younger generation about my health

Very good video, thank you ! Most importantly people in the Blue Zones tend to be shorter and thinner giving them more circulation to be healthier and to live longer. After all the human body has enough arteries, veins and capillaries to go around the world more than 2 times. Also shorter and thinner people are less likely to fall and get hurt.

5:30 and that they eat a plant based diet. Whole food plant based is excellent for health and excellent for the climat issue also. I had bloods done recently all perfect including cholesterol and ‘awesome’ blood pressure (awesome is the word my doctor used)(I eat wfpb)

I had alot of face twitching almost everyday after my stroke, but my twitches are gone after two months. I still have some strength, but I no longer can perform strength exercises that I used to be able to do. Its been five months since my stroke andI can do all the physical activities most people can do, but I'm still trying to get my strength back I once had

Why didn't this video mention hemorraghic strokes could be caused by the "medical industry" itself such as potential bleeding risks from blood---thinning medications or brain biopsies causing weakness in the brain walls? (I guess not enough time to discuss all of the potential risk factors/causes?) My relative suddenly passed because of those factors and profession was in the medical field.

While the dietary intake of salt needs to be managed an important factor comes back to insulin which influences the release of aldosterone by the adrenal glands. That hormone controls the kidneys’ release of sodium into the blood stream. That increase in sodium draws more water - I.e increased blood volume, increasing blood pressure.

So, I’ve alwayshad a low blood sugar thing my entire adult life. If I don’t eat a breakfast high in protein, my blood sugar level can drop so severely, I’ve had to leave work. I become shaky and very edgy and usually have to lay down. I use to believe eating something sugary is what I should do, but realized many years later it’s the protein I need. Once I get to this point, there is no quick way to stop it. At that point I will eat something with sugar, but often that doesn’t help. My A1C has always been around 5.4-5.6. I can’t do intermittent fasting, as I can’t go without food that long. I’d pass out. I’ve not been overweight most of my life. My fasting blood sugar is always well under 100, but when I have that blood draw, it’s early morning and my blood sugar hasn’t dropped that much yet. I have low blood pressure and really quite healthy ( 61 years old). In my 30’s and 40’s I did some intense bicycle riding. I would carry peanut and honey sandwiches because expending that much energy really dropped my blood sugar. Is this insulin resistance? I always though insulin resistance was too much sugar. It’s like my pancreas can’t produce the insulin my body needs to function. I’ve never have gotten an answer from a doctor as to why I’m this way. They say just eat and I’ll be OK. But sometimes it has happened even if I did eat a good breakfast.

Has your doctor not suggested Hypoglycemia? Your pancreas also makes a peptide hormone called Glucagon which raises blood sugar when it's low. Insulin resistance causes excess circulating blood glucose, but the excess is not stored by the cells in your body as fat, as they have become insulin resistant.

Been on both sides with low and high blood sugars. It sounds like you do NOT have insulin resistance based upon only info from your post. You have answered your own question. Eat more protein because you are not consistently/regularly eating enough food. Protein helps regulate blood sugars and you eventually get low blood sugar if you don't eat frequently or protein enough for you. Best wishes on your health journey.

Listen, I quit smoking in 2004. Since then, I've had 2 strokes. One in 2009 & the other 2028, right after the New Year. I had both strokes in the Pons section, the brain. I have a slight case of ataxia.

Doctors rush in and out patients because they are busy billing our insurance for billions, never taking the time to properly help us heal preventable disease. Health insurance companies should pay holistic and functional medical doctors instead. They are rewarding the wrong kinds of doctors.

Some say eat whole apple because of peeling fiber and antioxidants. Even unsweetened apple sauce doesn't have the peeling usually and it also gets cooked (to soften flesh) which destroys vitamins B and C and polyphenols.

Hello, I would like to thank you for the youtube videos which I find very helpful. I am a 54 year old female with 2 stents (put 8 months ago ) and I am, among other things, on daily baby Aspirin, and 10 mg of Prasugrel. Can you please do a video on food and supplements interactions with anticoagulants and anti-platelet medications and "risk of bleeding" . I've read a lot and I think I know more than most on the individual supplements but that just confuses me and makes me paranoid rather than give me some sense of confidence that I know what I am doing when I am eating and taking supplements. There are three questions that torment me in particular and I would like to ask you to be so kind to address those in the video as well. I understand that your videos are for educational purposes only and do not constitute medical advice and I have to consult with my healthcare practitioners (who mostly are too busy to talk about those things in detail; so basically I am on my own). So here are the questions 1) Does increased risk of bleeding translate into a possibility of spontaneous bleeding in the brain without any trauma, if there is no hypertension and no rigorous exercise. 2) Do pro-bleeding and anti-bleeding supplements cancel each other out. For example, I drink 4 glasses of green tea and consume 1/2 avocado and 1 cup of blueberries, on most days; and sometimes I consume a little bit of mixed greens salad (no kale). Those are all anti-bleeding. Does it mean that if I take Coenzyme Q10, turmeric, fish oil, ginseng, gingko biloba, mushroom extract, bitter melon, chamomile tea, cranberries (those are all pro-bleeding), the anti-bleeding will cancel out the effects of the pro-bleeding foods and supplements? I wouldn't take Coenzyme Q10, turmeric, fish oil, ginseng or gingko on the same day, I would rotate through them, one day one, another day- another. I am particularly interested in Coenzyme Q10 as I take Crestor 20 mg and I suffer from the known side effect of muscle weakness which (I tried that!) greatly improves with Coenzyme Q10, however, I learned later that Coenzyme Q10 also increases the "risk of bleeding" so I stopped it. 3) How to get my HDL up if I can't take supplements (such as fish oil) because they increase the risk of bleeding? I am running in circles here to manage my cholesterol and pre-diabetes. Is there a powerful HLD-upper that does not increase the risk of bleeding? My HLD is very low, virtually non-existent and nothing seems so help. Thank you very much indeed!!

If you still feel you have educational gaps surrounding your supplements, a registered dietician or nutritionist should be able to assist. As to raising your HDL level, no flush Niacin will help. I worked for a Nephrologist that had quite a few patients on Dialysis. All the dialysis patients had cholesterol issues and quite a few office patients had cholesterol issues as well. The majority were insulin dependent diabetics, as well. If you want to try the Niacin, again choose no flush, and begin with 500mg each evening about an hour before bed. It’s fine to take with your lipid medication if needed. If you still experience flushing (facial redness, skin feels hot) and find it unpleasant, you can take 200mg (count it towards daily maximum dosage and always with 8oz or more water) Ibuprofen one hour prior to the Niacin. Take the Niacin about two weeks and if you have noticed no unwanted effects, increase Niacin to 1000mg per day. If you take this for at least 8-10wks prior to your next cholesterol lab testing, you should see an improvement in your HDL level. If it’s only risen a very small amount 10pts or less, increase the Niacin to 1500mg each night, retest in 60 days. At the retest you can increase to 2000mg per evening if needed. The doctor had a number of patients with very low HDL and very high Triglycerides and had them taking the 2000mg Niacin along with their Lipitor or whichever cholesterol medication their primary physician had them taking. All the patients saw increases in HDL. I am not a doctor and not qualified to give medical advice, but I have shared what my former employer recommended to his patients and worked well for them. He is a Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician and a Board Certified Nephrologist.

80? 😂 I had a stroke at 36!😭 My stroke was caused by a HUGE thrombus that formed in my left ventricle. A piece broke off and made it's way to my brain causing a stroke that mostly paralyzed my entire left side of my body, especially my leg, I couldn't stand at all. The thrombus was so massive it had to be removed via open heart surgery. There is a video of my ultrasound on my KZbin page if you really wanna see how truly massive that thrombus really was.

Blue Zones. Three out of those five Blue Zones have Mediterranean climate. Is it possible that it isn't solely the food eaten there that increases life expectancy but also the climate in one way or the other? I would assume that most people in Loma Linda eat the usual US diet and not a Mediterrenean diet.
