Watched this video at about 12:00pm EST. Played tennis, then hit the gym for an hour. Workout was supposed to be deadlifts 4x3x340 followed by an AMRAP at 340. Decided to pull sumo, because I remembered Josh Hancott spitting mad knowledge... Breezed through the working sets. Scrapped the AMRAP and decided to hit some singles. Previous PR was 385 conventional. Went for 405, smoked it for a double. Went to 455 and got it. 70 pound PR.

Apologies on the lack of uploads, been prepping for my trip to California (getting some cool collabs organized). In this video, IPF World Champion Josh breaks down the sumo deadlift & explains something I've never heard before...that unlike the conventional which is essentially one movement, the sumo is two parts. Cuz people expect only massive huge blokes to lift big weight. Size isn't equal to strength. All your joints, tendons etc play more of a part to it than muscles. That's why (usually) steroid users get lots of injuries. The muscles get stronger before all the supporting structure. That's why being nautrual, you don't get massive, and you don't get much bigger very fast. Because all the skeleton, joints, tendons are getting stronger first.

In sumo DL, the width of your stand should be such that your shins are vertical at point of initial pull. Your arms should also be hanging vertically, so you can keep as much an erect body posture as possible.Lock out is complete when your hips are in full extension, usually cued with full squeeze of the glutes, not the extension of the upper back.Josh keeps rounded upper back because it allows for lesser knee bend and hip hinge, thus a taller initial posture allows to pull heavier load. But it can eventually lead to injury on max lifts. If you are not competing, keep the whole of the back neutral and super tight. Keep your torso as rigid as possible by keeping lats, erectors, traps tight. Also importantly, tighten and pull in your lower abs to create strong support under rib cage to stiffen the torso.

I wouldn't say it's incorrect sumo, it's called squat stance. Feet as forward as possible. The method has no sticking points and has allowed me to deadlift with no issues. Neither conventional nor sumo works for me. Ed Coan was on to something when he deadlifted like that and I'm surprised more people don't.

Just got back from a sumo workout. On my final set, after the first rep, I rearranged my hand position and went for the pull - got it 1/3 of the way up the shin, felt something wrong in my low back and set the weight back down again. Felt a throbbing ache in the area of my tailbone and had a hard time opening and loading my hips, ie. bending down and unloading the weights from the bar. I feel pain when tilting the hips either way but in general, just an ache and a throb near the tailbone. I’m searching KZbin and freaking out about a possible herniated disc, a pulled ligament or something that’s inevitably going to be a major set back. I’m really scared but also know it’s too early to conclude anything. Anyone had any experience with deadlift-related injuries in the tailbone area?

@@thenakedthrall4034 Some nerve pinching damage. Can’t go too heavy these days or it’ll open back up again - sadly... Doing mostly RDLs and SLDLs and haven’t really sumo’ed for about a year now. Now it’s more a psychological issue where I hype myself up to re-injuring myself whenever I try to pull anything crazy. So sticking to the 5-15 rep range on all DLs with lower weights. But I’ve seen way more growth than before by doing so, so it wasn’t all bad. :) Think it came down to inexperience and ego lifting.
