Having met my wife on Roe Island some 50 years ago when attending my best friend’s wedding on my first visit from Manchester. I have visited the Olympic chippy occasionally over the last half century. It was Greek owners then with new owners every now and again. I can confirm that it has provided good value quality food from my first visit to my most recent visit and the shop has hardly changed over that time. Really enjoyed your review and brought back many memories of my visits over the last half century. While never living in the area my many, many visits from Manchester have nearly always had visits to the many fine chippies in the Barrow area. Both me and my wife always enjoy your excellent videos.

We visited my Grandparents in Ramsden Street and took them to the Lakes. We did not have lunch out and arrived back at 4pm. At the time there was a chippy in Church St but it did not open until 5.30pm. The same with two chippies on Rawlinson street. But Olympic was open and saved the day.

I've told the mrs I'm changing our meal tonight, you've put me in the mood for a chippy tea, that wont be till around 5pm though. Salavating already ! will need salt and plenty of vinegar on my meal. Fish chips and mushy pease for me, the mrs is having a hollands meat pie, and the lad is having a sausage . Sharing the large portion of chips. Oh and a carton of gravy. Let you know how much later, I haven't a clue yet.

A Chippy has become such a rare gem. As a kid, it was Savaloy and chips with scraps. Salt and vinegar wrapped in newspaper. And a pickled onion once in a while. £1.

From the Duke of Edinburgh to the end of Rawlinson street there were that many pubs, that starting at the duke on half a pint then doubling up at each pub couldn’t be done. How many pubs remain on Rawlinson street? After six pubs you’d have had 16 pints. I had included pubs and hotels that junctioned Rawlinson Street. Wow that's exeptional value,in my favorite local chippy for two cod and chips plus two cartons of mushy peas it's £23.50, we have to think twice now whether to get fish and chips on a Friday, I'm in Trafford, Manchester, but they are good, even at that price they are packed out on a Friday xxx

excellent value for money, huge fish and really nice chips - then you have the peas and drink. Where I am, a much smaller piece of Haddock (tastes lovely though) and a portion of chips (which sometimes are left over from lunchtime and reheated is nearly 11 quid! no drink no peas.

When I was a lad, I used to live around the corner from the Olympic, in the Traveller's Rest club (remember that?); it was run by a Greek couple back then, and I used to go to the Tech with George, their son. I'm sure it was once called the Copper Kettle, and I've got a vague memory of chips being 13p! Anyway, I'm getting off before you work out my age, and I'm going to see if I've got enough money for me tea 'cos I'm bloody starving now, cheers for that!

You're making me hungry, time to sort out lunch. The other week I had fish, chips mushy peas and a hot chocalate in Morrisions cafe and at £7 I thought that was good value. The batter was crispy and the fish tasty, chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle, would buy it again.

You are right Americans just don’t eat savory pies,but there is a lot of good food available here if you want to buy it, I for one don’t miss savory pies at all,other than steak,and kidney,which I did enjoy I don’t remember my mother making many pies,and my mother cooked every day.I think pies are more popular in the UK now they were in the late ‘40s,the ‘50s and the early ‘60s when I was growing up there,in those days you couldn’t get pies in fish,and chips shops,or in pubs,and all the Greg’s,and Wetherspoons type places didn’t exist,butchers didn’t do pies,and really the first supermarkets were opening,so unless your mother was making pies you didn’t get a pie to often.

Good food in America, I'm not so sure about that, we have good steaks but every place has burgers and lots of them which I find quite boring, plus our food is full of preservatives, its why our sell by dates are much longer than in the UK.

@@rbnhd1144 Nice to hear that your wife makes pies,but I don’t agree that there isn’t good food here,if you buy lots of premade foods then no the food isn’t good,but it’s pretty easy to avoid most of that stuff.Have you watched what people are eating over in the UK now,it’s got so many E numbers,and fillers,it’s nothing like we remember.if they have shorter sell by dates,maybe because a lot of their food is only refrigerated,and most,not all premade food here is frozen.I must say I love burgers,medium,though I don’t eat meat very often now,I have never been a big meat eater,and as I get older I seem to be eating even less,about once a week now.I live in NYC how about you?

@@JanetBrown-px2jn Hello Janet, we don't really do pre-made food as like you say its full of preservatives and stuff that's not good for us, we hardly touch fast food. twice a month at the most and never Mcdonalds. I'm not a beef lover but pork chicken and turkey is good. As I watch Gareth I can see the change in Brits as they eat all these pre-made processed meals, they are cheap but not good for you, I see all the chemicals Yikes. I've been back and noticed Brits are looking heavier, but they go out and eat a three course meal, with a chicken strip starter that would equal a full meal for me, its almost like Brits are trying to eat like they imagine Americans eat. I'm in my late 60's and eat far less than I used to 10 years ago, I get quite bored when eating out but its something to do sooner than be at home all the time. I'm from the Derbyshire, Notts and South Yorkshire Borders, I live in Oregon an hour from the pacific. I miss good quality pub meals and Fish n Chips, Take Care.

Unbelievable value Gaz!! Im guessing that would be about £18.00 from my local Fishnchikn rip-off merchants, who no longer have my custom😉 There’s still profiteering going on from when energy and oil prices went up but didn’t fall when prices dropped. My local shop was always busy in the past but it’s very quiet nowadays! Have a cracking weekend 👍🏻

That looked really nice Gareth and good value. They were certainly glow in the dark peas but there's nowt wrong with that if they taste ok. Over in Hull we tend to eat more Haddock than Cod so much so that if you go into a chippy you have to ask for Cod otherwise you won't get it. Another good video. Take care.
