The crater is so different from when I first saw it in 1969. We went the first day of the eruption in the crater and the lava lake covered the entire floor, with multiple fountains shooting up through the lake. I was all of 11. Since then I've been privileged to see live lava 3 more times, the second time getting with inches of a small rivulet where it crossed the Chain of Craters Road.

Lava level is still about 200 meters or 600 feet below the caldera rim. If one eruption adds about 5 meters or 15 feet it would take about 40 eruptions to overflow the caldera rim. However, taking into account that some eruptions will be along the rift zones, it would take years, perhaps decades to completely fill the summit caldera.
@lesliepropheter5040Күн бұрын
When the caldera completely drained at the beginning of this eruptive series, before the land mass dropped so drastically perhaps the old, shallower caldera would have overflowed by now (?) Looks like the two vents are still in the same place
