The crater is so different from when I first saw it in 1969. We went the first day of the eruption in the crater and the lava lake covered the entire floor, with multiple fountains shooting up through the lake. I was all of 11. Since then I've been privileged to see live lava 3 more times, the second time getting with inches of a small rivulet where it crossed the Chain of Craters Road.

@@michaeldeierhoi4096 I know it hasn't been touched there recently but I used to run a triathalon around Kilauea crater, and just the weight of us running across decades-old lava, if you didn't choose your path carefully, your foot could poke through a bubble of long cooled and Faded in the sun lava. Disappears to be fresher black lava that they're walking on. Just disconcerting to see. I'm sure they know what they're doing

Iceland is #1 when it come to exploiting geothermal energy. There are a few small geo rigs here in the USA. The Salton sea area has real thin crust and a rig was set up there, using hot brine from a well. The rig shut down because the pipes became coated with copper and other metals dissolved in the brine.

@GhostPhantoms-m2i

Nope they respected Pele and did not disturb her. Just like how they only went up to maunkea for specific things and quickly made it bck down they did not linger on the mountain. They wanted the place pristine as possible bcz its where the Goddess dwelled. That’s wat I think I don’t know for sure but that’s my guess.

@@GhostPhantoms-m2i the pacific islanders had an ethic called taboo. Some places were forbidden to men, sort of a religious prohibition.....I am wondering if the Hawai'ians would venture here with offerings to Pele. Going into this caldera would definitely put you into a respectful frame of mind.

Lava level is still about 200 meters or 600 feet below the caldera rim. If one eruption adds about 5 meters or 15 feet it would take about 40 eruptions to overflow the caldera rim. However, taking into account that some eruptions will be along the rift zones, it would take years, perhaps decades to completely fill the summit caldera.
@lesliepropheter5040
@lesliepropheter5040 Күн бұрын
When the caldera completely drained at the beginning of this eruptive series, before the land mass dropped so drastically perhaps the old, shallower caldera would have overflowed by now (?) Looks like the two vents are still in the same place
