Big Jim Video Productions takes a look back into the 1980's to bring you this footage, compiled from a day's worth of video at the Strasburg Railroad, in Strasburg, PA. On this summer day, #90 was running, but the focus of this video is former Pennsylvania Railroad E7s 4-4-2 #7002, an Atlantic-type steam locomotive, pulling what is probably the half-hour trains. This is not the real #7002, that set the land speed record at one point (that engine was scrapped) but another engine that the Pennsylvania Railroad altered to look like #7002 for the 1939 World's Fair in New York.
Note the area where the Cherry Crest Adventure Farm now is, how that area used to be undeveloped. Plus, there is a clip of 7002 pulling into the station at Strasburg, and you can see quite a few cars in different places.
Enjoy this look back in time at a classic American locomotive!

We just saw the 7002 and 1223 in the museum across the street. I feel its a shame they were never repaired and returned to occasional rotated service. They are cold and displayed in the dark. Not a great way to see an engine I saw alive as a child.

Well they belong to the museum, and the museum can do what they want with them - so you'll have to take it up with them....

@@Bigjimvideo Technically, they belong to the state as apart of the PRR collection. The museum is just holding them and is financed by the state in some parts as well.

No matter what decade you go to, every engine on the Strasburg railroad (retired or in service) makes think about how to name the passenger trains as if it was the Indian Valley Railroad from Shining Time. Like 475 is the Rainbow Sun, 90 is the Presidental Flyer etc...

I just realized that during 7002's 6 year career on Strasburg she never had the logo on her like 1223 did o her cab.

Funny Enough the PRR Never Ran 8063 after its rebuild. So 7002 was Technically a Brand New Engine When It ran

what happened to 7002?

Christopher Bradley Is now across the street at the Railroad Museum of PA. I'm not 100% sure of the reasons why, although I'm fairly sure that the amount of work that would have to be done to it prevented the RRMofPA from allowing Strasburg to alter the engine further. Don't quote me on that, however.

I think that's true. When the rules changed, it was found that both the 7002's and 1223's fireboxes were too thin for operation. Because of this, the museum decided to retire both engines and keep them in their original state rather than repair them to continue running. That's one story I've heard anyway.

@@mylesspear The other and more pressing reason that most forget is that 7002 and 1223 were never owned by the Strasburg Railroad. The 1223 was leased to the SRC in the 1960's because Camelback 4 was not up to the task. The 7002 was put back in service for two reasons: one the railroad needed a substitute for 89, and two 7002 was in extremely good shape that it could be overhauled and put in service quickly (four months to be exact). And while 1223 was well liked 7002 was not as well liked as her stable mate. Don't get me wrong 7002 is a good locomotive, but she was just not built for this kind of work. Her performance is the equivalent of attaching a plough to a race horse. It can do it but not without struggle.

@@willhorowitz8806 7002 was designed for 125mph high speed service hence her HUGE 80in drivers and why the original 7002 set a record of 127.4mph. 1223 while originally a freighter was WAY more suited to slow speed tourist duties than 7002. The funny thing is during the doubleheader trip on the Keystone corridor with 7002 and 1223, the train could go faster cause of 7002 since it was familiar servicw but poor 1223 wasnt meant for speeds more than 80mph XD.
