Heather Smith I was lucky enough to see Fleetwood Mac twice on the marathon 1979-1980 Tusk tour. My 1st show, on Dec 1st 1979 blew me away! Got "stadium seats" (standing seats on the field of an indoor football stadium) for $10. Stood outside in single digit temperatures for 3 hours, waiting for the stadium security to let the crowd in. Doors opened and ran in. Got 20 feet from the stage right in the middle! Wow! I was amazed how much they rocked in person vs the album recordings. Lindsay Buckingham was on fire! The band was still in their prime musically...and they had the money to buy the best equipment! Remember them playing the Chain! Really loved how they'd turn the lights down midway through the song...,and then the rhythm section of John McVie & Mick Fleetwood would kick-in...1st Mick tapping on the drums, then John chiming in w the 1st bass line, then the spotlight hit John, " doog-dada-doog" and then Lindsay joined in the fun w that magnificent guitar jam...."running in the shadows". I remember turning around, after the song ended, as crowd erupted, and the house lights went down. All I saw were Bic Lighters ablaze everywhere and 20,000+ stomping their feet for more!

The song has an almost operatic quality to it, what with the internal conversations going on during it. One aspect of this song hasn’t even been alluded to in any of these comments - John McVie’s bass solo. Sounds like thunder coming down from the heavens. It carries the entire last two minutes of the song. After the guitar comes back in John just goes into full beast mode. If anyone in Fleetwood Mac could be considered underrated, it’s Mr. McVie. He and Mick are the glue that have kept this band going all these years. I’m proud to call John my first bass teacher. I can’t read a note of music, but I learned to play by playing along with “Rumours”. At one point or another, bands I’ve played in over the past 45+ years have played every single song on the album plus “Silver Springs”. I’ve JUST ABOUT got it right after all this time. It should also be noted that McVie is playing a one-of-a-kind Alembic Series I fretless bass with a stainless steel fretboard.

The Chain is hands down one of the coolest songs that Fleetwood Mac ever did live and it was a "all hands on deck" type of effort because the song started out as a Stevie Nicks lyric. But that only tells half the story. Lindsey Buckingham was a tyrant in the studio, a bit OCD when it came to being a producer of Fleetwood Mac in the studio. The Rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie really are a huge part of that song! And live it was a total group effort. Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham are in synch with their vocal harmony too!
@Truly1Tom8 жыл бұрын
The irony is that if the personal lives of the members hadn't been as fucked up as they had been at crucial points in the group's history they wouldn't have had the core of material to draw from. All of the pain, drama and as was opined by another the drugs were what made the band so interesting! As I said earlier Lindsey was a total dock in the studio. Completely OCD tyrant when it came to what he wanted. Stevie said they couldn't stand to be in the studio at the same time that they operated through the engineer what each needed from the other. To say the least it was a very dysfunctional way to cut an album. The men got on quite well but the men and the women! Oy gavault! Zeit ist mashugna!

Yes, I also did imitate his style of finger picking many years ago back in the early 1980s when I was a kid and saw the Tusk Documentary. Those down strums and upstrums on the electric guitar are where it's at. Also using your thumb and index finger on single strings to imitate flat picking. Be ready for bloody fingers if you play at the intensity like Lindsey. Carol Ann Harris in her book talked about having to clean his bloody fingers after a show.
@pup100811 ай бұрын
@@charlesledbetter1735 I wouldn't profess to being anywhere near the level or intensity of Lindsey so the fingers are fine for the hour or so I might be picking the odd tune out! I just like the dynamic range you can add to the instrument in where & how you pluck/strum the strings. I'll also sometimes bring other fingers in when strumming to get a lovely "cascade" sound. As a relative beginner also, I'll do scales using fingers which really helps you know where the strings are & another exercise I use for getting to know the fretboard where I play an open note in unison with the position that note is on, on other strings. 👍
