"That Joke isn't Funny Anymore" is top shelf depressing Smiths. But it's a beautiful song.

This is one of your loveliest Smiths reactions I've watched. I was laughing hysterically at you in some parts, but was also touched by your sense of awe and bewilderment in others. When you said 'Oh, I love it' at 5.34 I could tell you were caught in a moment and talking to yourself. You'd forgotten all about the fact that you were recording for an audience.

If you like Morrissey "feeling it" live as opposed to the studio check out The Smiths doing Barbarism begins at home on The Tube where both Morrissey and Marr both end up dancing together on stage when Andy does his bass solo near the end

Well I Wonder is a great suggestion. Definitely one for your list. Though I'd suggest going for the studio versions rather than live versions wherever possible. Apart from stuff off the live album they released of course (Rank).

treat yourself to some Smiths! And treat us too - we don't mind a succession if Smiths reactions at all! One you've not done yet "Well I Wonder"

The lyrics are a bit autobiographic about all the criticism Morrissey got from the press about his statements so he's actually also laughing at them. Great reaction!

If you haven’t heard their song’That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore’ then you need to hear it. Prob one of their best tracks. It’s off their Meat is Murder album from 1985.

Great Song, allways makes me smile. We had so much fun in the 80´s. Thanks for that Lauren! Some "newer" Smiths Songs "need" a second guitar (Player) for that real live performance. The album "Rank" has been recorded in October 1986 live in London. Here Craig Cannon is listed as additional guitarist. But I think, there was no official live video recorded.

I just love the contrast of the very calm, cool, stoic band, and then Morrissey waving the mic cord around like he's a lion tamer. Also, nothing like a good "R" roll from Morrissey. I never knew about the fifth Smith, and I'm a fan, lol. Looks like we're both learning something today! (Well for you, who knows when).

The hearing aid was for a fan who wrote in to Morrissey and she mentioned she was deaf and that she hadn't seen them live because she was embarrassed about her hearing aid, the band was going on stage that night so Morrissey found a hearing aid to wear so she didn't feel embarrassed, thete were a few performances with the hearing aid and it even resurfaced in the video for November Spswned a Monster

Lauren, if you ever need adopting, bell me on the blower and I'll be there! This Charming Mans jingle jangle had me hooked on The Smiths within a minute, but the bass made me love them forever. But we have a crime scene here! I actually prefer the B side "Jeane" which has a criminally low profile - but worse still - it's not on the USA version! And it's amazing live....but then every concert I went to was heavenly....apologies for the blank message....I'm just a decrepit old wrinkly!

The extra guitarist proves that they'r playing live....because they need someone to play rhythm guitar... In the studio, multi-tracking allows each member to layer several different parts, which would be difficult to recreate live on stage without an extra pair of hands 🤓

We should probably clarify - as explained in the update of Rogan's book, there's uncertainty as to when he was "fired" (before or after his arrest?) and whether Morrissey acted unilaterally (he denies it) or someone placed a "forged" note on Andy's windscreen in order to nudge the band into confronting him.

Craig was a much needed member of the band to not only replace Andy when he was fired, but NO ONE could possibly replace Andy's unique style. Craig was kept on the fill in for Marr's guitar sound on stage and it was a big addition to the sound. He felt awkward being the "fifth" Smith. He really could not contribute directly to the lyrics or to the music. He had to fight to make some small contribution and he did get some nominal credit. It was a no-win situation for him. However, he was able to play on a couple of Morrissey solo tracks in 1988 and 1989. You should check out the long form video HULMERIST which is Morrissey's first solo and FREE concert playing only Smiths songs that were never played live previously.playing with the entire band except for Marr. Note the long-form of HULMERIST is the fan reaction to attending that FREE concert and promo videos of singles. The actual concert itself needs to be separately: Morrissey : Wolverhampton 88. Good stuff.

Remember watching this the day it aired on UK tv. Just brilliant. The band of my life. By all accounts it seems Craig Gannon was treated pretty appallingly in his short time with the band. Such a shame.

Craig would have been 20 in this performance. Andy had been using heroin for a while and it had got out of hand which is why he was sacked. But they brought him back in trying to repair things, but it was all downhill from this point on.
