The developer, Infinity Co. Ltd, were a small developer, consisting of only three people, Yukio Horimoto, Reiko Horimoto, and Kazuo Sawa. Battle of Olympus was their first original game. Mostly, they ported Western games to Japanese platforms, including, interestingly, the PC-98 port of Doom. They're still in business today, I believe! I have fond memories of this game. I was never able to beat any NES games since I was so young, but I was able to beat this one. I remember playing this with a notebook and a pencil next to me for hours. I was way into Greek mythology and had watched Clash of the Titans a million times, so I was obsessed with this game. Somehow I was able to beat it, but not without a lot of trial and error and some tips and help from a neighborhood friend. Top notch graphics, great music, and memorable game play, plus not so difficult I couldn’t beat it after hours and days of gameplay. Great video and review/analysis!

I beat this game at 7 yrs old and it took me months to figure it out. Really good game. The jump boots are actually easy to use too btw. If running FULL speed HOLD the jump button with a ceiling above you to switch gravity. Jump and hold it til you flip. But again I always found it based on left/right movement speed to trigger so it takes a sec to get to full speed from a stop to allow the switch. That’s what tripped me up til I figured it out. I would say it is more accurate to recommend it to someone who has played Zelda II, wet their appetite and is looking for something similar but more challenging. Once you have beaten Zelda II, you can do that over and over again without much trouble, but Battle of Olympus is still a beast of a challenge every time you pop it in. This to the extent that having beaten it once should be enough, and any more than that can start you questioning whether or not you are just a masochist, considering that there are so many more games left to challenge yourself with. And concerning flipping to the ceiling, I remember the trick to be first reaching enough forward momentum and holding in the jump button all the way to the top of your jump arc. Jumping standing still does not work, and you have to let go of the jump button to not involuntarily flipping. The rest is up to you to find the sweet spot when the character does it, but once you find it, it should work consistently.

The Lamia is a headache. From what I remember, once you are as geared up as you can be at that point (and it's early in the game) you still have to just rush it, jump over its initial attack so you can get close and start slapping it and never letting up. You need momentum. If you hesitate and slow down, you're just gonna get whopped
@clintonjohnson597312 күн бұрын
Just like your analogy to Zelda 2 and getting extra height with your jump, that is how you activate the Sandals of Hermes. You have to get some momentum then do a full jump. Do NOT let go of the jump button with full momentum and you'll go up / down.

This game is legendary. The difficulty is harsh because Zelda 2 had extra lives/1UPs and BOL didn't, but it was so much fun to me. The sandals do take getting used to. i played through this game years ago, and the one most important criticism of this game by far, is the currency. you need lots of olives to buy stuff, and you get them too slowly, and it bogs the game down into a serious grind to get the olives you need. i don't remember the details, i don't remember if i actually NEEDED an item from a shop, or if i just wanted it, but i just remember killing the same enemy over and over and over to get enough olives. some other games have a bit of that, like castlevania 2, but i remember it being extreme here. my final assessment was that this game was really cool, the 'feel' is nice since it's modelled on zelda 2 (there's an interview online somewhere where the dev admitted they copied Z2 feel), and the graphics are really nice. they use some really nice color pallettes, imo. but the damn olives bring the game down a lot. it's a big flaw on what would've otherwise been a great game, for me anyway.

Once again I'm hard-pressed to disagree with your assessment. 'Olympus' is a great game, but it definitely does not feel as polished as Zelda 2. On the other hand, this game was made by a husband-and-wife team of programmers, and holy damn they did an amazing job making this all by themselves. The husband did the main program, while the wife did the story and graphics. There was also a third person who handled the music. That was pretty much it. For the record, the Hermes Sandals are activated by pressing 'up' when jumping, but only if there's a ceiling to walk on. You press 'down' while jumping to return to the floor. It's not super-responsive, so it can still be rather frustrating.

I'm with you, James. Without nostalgia goggles, the truth is plain as day. That being said, various rom hacks attempt to fix this game's problems. With a bit of polish and balancing, I do believe it can be redeemed. It has the tasty ingredients of a good game, but is sadly undercooked.

This is a game I never heard of until long after the NES era. Have yet to play it but Zelda 2 was one of the 1st games I ever beat & Faxanadu was a game I got really into in high school during nothing else to do rental weekends

I remember walking to Albertsons and renting this and freaking loved it

Wait, wasn't "The Guardian Legend" published by Broderbund as well? That game is in my top five NES games. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep, I mentioned it in the video

This was one of my favourite NES games. After four or five years with it I could beat this game in 3 hours. I'm sure I'd have a hard time with it now though, it's been around 30 years since I last played.

I dunno, I first played this game (other than renting it) as an adult - livestreamed it beginning to end about 7 years ago and I absolutely love the game. No savestates, no guides, no real nostalgia for it going in. Of course, Zelda 2 is one of my all-time favs, and the sidescrolling action RPG is one of my favorite genres, but still. Just the fact that the game is very straightforward about where to go and what to do puts it head and shoulders above most of its contemporaries and makes the game age very well. I've also always been the type to keep a gaming notebook on hand, especially when playing older games!

The only thing I've been able to ever find about this game is there were three people on the staff, a married couple who did the game development and the composer, who also composed the music for River City Ransom.

I rented this game as a kid and liked it, but it was hard as hell. I loved Zelda 2, and Faxanadu, so it was right up my alley. I never beat it, and bought it again a few years ago. Still haven't played it.

Sorry, back up...I am confused. Do you folks not sometimes reverse gravity and end up on the ceiling? It makes using the bathroom hard...often have to wash my hair after. Really just me?

You never figured out the flip jump? Took me 3 minutes as a kid. It’s how fast you go and how long you hold down the jump button.

Having played both zelda 2 and battle of olympus when i was a child, i defenitely believe that z2 is more difficult. Sure, olympus too has some difficult spots, most of which can however be handled with careful moving and positioning. Know your enemy! Bats in olympus are not more frustrating than bats in z2. And those boomerang throwing guys in zelda 2 are not easier than e.g. Lamia. Last but not least, the trick for roof jumping is simply to keep A pressed, man what's wrong with your controller😅

I used to finish battle of olympus several times without a single death when I was a kid! And it tool me not a long time to reach this perfection. Z2 well, even after years i cant say i master it. That said, growing old somewhat has ruined my playing capabilities so i kind of understand that an adult playing olympus for the 1st times might find it not so amusing

This game made me more angry than Simon's Quest, Zelda II and the first TMNT game combined. This is one where a modern remake with updated map and save resources would be so great!

I never realized that this game had so many similarities to Zelda 2. I actually have very fond memories of this game and very unpleasant memories of Zelda 2. I think that confirms my theory that I would have liked Zelda 2 better if I hadn't gone into it expecting another game like the first Zelda.
