Love the idea but the ducks need to be able to dunk their whole heads in the water to keep their noses clear so they can breathe. I'll go with a next sized up fence with bigger gaps...... ooops never mind. you just touched on that subject.... didnt watch all the way through right away. My bad

Thanks Rob, I actually have a way of applying the duck shield principle for a large number of ducks that didn't make the cut for this video. I will share a video of this soon in our membership area. Thanks again for your comment!

Shit. Well that just changed my life. I think I'll leave the kiddie pool in there, but the duck shield will be good for keeping their drinking water clean

Put the water on the outside of the tractor they can stick their head through the fence🐓 no need to take up interior footage, nor build extras.

Thanks BPF! I learned quickly about a guard for the drinking fountain when I needed to travel. I used a metal gate with 2x4 slots & that minimized the waste. Happy "ducking" problems...lol. I've got 5 Indian Runners & 7 Pekin ducks. I love how fast they grow!

I love your videos and yes some of the tricks will reduce the mess but they will not negate them. I think it’s unfair to make potential duck owners believe that ducks can be “mess free” as your thumbnail implies. Less messy, Yes. But let’s not set ducks up for failure. People need to accept that ducks are messy but also bring an enormous amount of joy. Just like “where there are ducks there are prey”...”where there are ducks there is mess”.

Just found this channel via dougs video.....great stuff! I've gone from 35 ducks to 9 now.....I think it's a bobcat! My ducks free roam since I have a 9 acre lake....but clearly predators are a problem! We need to build a duck hotel for them to go in at night.
@MikeTheFitFarmer7 жыл бұрын
Ouch! 35 to 9! That hurts right there. We put them up in the electrified poultry netting with the chickens at night because of predators. You have a huge lake! Thanks so much for watching!!

Great video. Really interesting ideas. If I had a pond of an appropriate size, relative to the number of ducks I had, would I be able to swim in the pond also, or use it for anything else, or would it be too gross? Let's also say the pond had a small budget to be set up with some filtering plants and a modest pump and filter, but nothing professional or extravagant. I hear these creatures can really stink up the place, but I want them so badly I can't stand it. I keep thinking surely there must be a way to set them up to let them freely be ducks full-time without causing problems. Or maybe there isn't, and I'll have to have a separate pond for swimming and other duck-free activities? A permaculture ducks course is absolutely right up my alley. I'm glad I came across this video. I will definitely be looking into that before I bring any ducks home. Thanks!

What do you do with them in the winter? We live in CT and get a lot of snow.
@MikeTheFitFarmer6 жыл бұрын
They actually do well in the snow. Their feathers keep them plenty warm and they get in the water as long as it isn't frozen. The hardest part is keeping the water thawed for them when it is cold. We had a really long cold snap and we would have to go out at least twice a day to give them fresh water. There is a little footage of them in the snow in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXioiGV4rq-bmq8 Thanks for watching Christina!

How do you move the duck tractor everyday? Just literally drag it to a new spot? We used to only keep them in our coop at night and graze during the day, however we have bobcats who have been hunting at 9am when its light out.. ugh! So now they don't get much time to forge in the yard and the coop is pretty gross! It is pretty heavy but trying to see if I could move our coop around the yard to help with this and allow them to forge more. Any advice would be great!!

Urgence PC you can always give them more access to water if you like. We have a pond that we let ours out on during most days but if you have to keep them in a pen the duck shield really helps keep the mess down. They only "have" to be able to submerge their head in order to keep clean.

Hi there. We love your channel and your enthusiasm for the farming life. We only have a small garden but we try to do something with it - we too have ducks among other enterprises. We were inspired by this video and the duck water door has been made. But how can we get the ducks to put their heads through and find the water? For a couple of days they've been looking at it but not brave enough to discover the liquid delights on the other side. Take care.

I have 2 male ducks and 3 females but one female had 3 sets of 3 duck at different ti e which makes her a mom of 9 so all together it's 14 and I tried using a gadget like you did for their water and it worked for maybe a week but then they started to try and get over the fence to swim so I have 4 of the huge tubs they are used to mix cement and I keep water in them and they love it since the 9 babies are big now love swimming in the tubs. My ducks free range with 24 chickens on a acre of grassy land which they love to roam around but at night they live in 2 huge 1 medium coops
